Where's Poppa? : Waukegan, Illinois

Waukegan, Illinois

I haven't seen this in years. The version I saw, at the theater and on broadcast television had an enigmatic scene where Louise goes to the courthouse where Gordon is working and tells him that she's leaving. She says she's going home. Gordon asks where that is. "Waukegan, Illinois". He asks if that's not where Jack Benny is from. She affirms. He asks if there's not a high school there named after him, and I believe the security guard answers that it's a Junior High School, which is the case. I hope it's still in later versions of the film.

I used to live there, for about 15 years. Ironically, it wasn't until I moved to Chicago and found a Chicago Tribune article on Waukeganites George K. Spoor and Edward Amet that I realized the special place the town has in cinema history. Until then I puzzled over the mention of the town in Where's Poppa? and a couple of Marx Brothers films. There is an exhibition about these people in The Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda, Illinois.
