Any tips or link on how to properly write a screenplay?

Me and my 2 friends want to start writing a screenplay. How do we properly structure a script?

Re: Any tips or link on how to properly write a screenplay?

Give your protagonist a big problem around on fourth of the way through the script. Have the problem complicate itself for the next two fourths, then tell us whether or not he solves it in the last fourth and show us how.

Include a theme. Besides the physical action, what is this screenplay about. The way the protagonist resolves his problem should reveal the theme.

Don't go heavy on the description. Don't write stuff that can't be seen like emotions or back story; show us all that through actions and dialogue.

For technical structure, this helped me get started, loco (url below). Good luck!

Oh, and I also have a Word Template you can use to get started, as well (no sense in spending even just $50 for screenplay software when this is free).

PM me with your personal email and I can send it to you.

For software try Celtx. It's free and it's really very good.

This is my happy face.

Solid tips on what to do and what not to do when writing your first screenplays can be found on my website (link below). Pay close attention to the Fatal Flaws section. Good luck!

Re:ad a bunch of screenplays

Read about 10-20 screenplays and you will understand how they work. I have a different Script Tip every day on my website (link at the bottom) that may answer other questions you might have.

Good luck!

Try these places for online scripts:

Here's wher I go for paper copies:

This is also the time of year that studios post their scripts on the studio website for Oscar consideration. And the Black List just came out - some places have links to some of those scripts (you have to really search for those).

Cool Thread

My whole life has been a series of unfinished books

How to properly write a screenplay?

Another bump.

For some reason, basic dramatic structure has become controversial. It's 2,400 years old, and works. And it's simple.

Act 1: Introduce the coinflict. (about a quarter of your script)
Act 2: Conflict and escalation of conflict. (about half your script - this is the meat of the story, the excitng and emotionally involving stuff)
Act 3: Resolution of the conflict. (about a quarter of your story)

Also - have a great idea, not just a good one and not the first one you come up with. When people ask you "What's your script about?" you want them to be interested enough to read it on the idea alone.

Stories are about people with problems - so who is the person and what is their problem?

In my opinion, everything you need to know can be found either in Syd Field's "The Screenwriter's Workbook" or Stanislavski's "An Actor Prepares."
