The House That Screamed : ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

** SPOILERS ** - the ending

I would have liked to have seen the movie continue where it ended. He locks the mother in the attic, but we don't know what happens after that. I can think of all kinds of scenarios with the boy, the mother, what happens in the morning, etc. Still, I enjoyed the film because of the atmosphere, the wonderful sets and camera-work, and the performances. It could have been a fantastic movie, but it was still quite good.

Re: ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

I thought the ending of this film was quite sick and startling. I consider the shocking conclusion to be a very satisfying wrap-up for this excellent and unjustly overlooked horror sleeper.

Nobody does W.C. Fields singing "Mama Told Me Not to Come" better than Paul Frees.

Re: ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

Yep. It was excellent.

Re: ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

This film really needs to be remastered and given a proper DVD release. It is one of the best horror films that nobody has ever heard of.

Re: ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

I love this film, but the dubbing kinda ruins it a bit. I would love an uncut Spanish language print with English subs. THEN, we'd have one of the greatest cult movies ever made. IMO.

Re: ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

I agree, a neglected classic, but don't forget that there would be no 'official' language version. Although 'The Finishing School' is a Spanish production set in a French boarding school, all the principle actors (Palmer, Maude and Moulder Brown) were recorded in English and later dubbed into Continental variants. The remaining cast were dubbed into regional dialects. Thus the case of many other films stretching over this period, like Blood and Roses, Baron Blood and Suspiria. So an uncut English language version will contain dubbing and an uncut Spanish language version will contain dubbing. Subtitles either way appreciated.

Re: ** SPOILERS ** - the ending

Yes, I agree, I do not like dubbing of any kind. Most of the time it just sounds silly. But I would be happy for a decent DVD release of this movie anytime.

It was many, many years ago that I watched it on TV. It really creeped me out. The cinematography was great, the dark brooking atmosphere and that terribly horrific ending--that's what makes a good horror film. Well, technically it's "terror", as horror implies something supernatural. This goes to show that all you need is a psychopath to create one heck of a scary film.

Cut Scenes from Spanish DVD

I just compared the Spanish DVD 'La Residencia' to the English language VHS version 'The Finishing School' and noted that two scenes were cut from the Spanish version. One is after the whipping scene in which Madam Fourneau stoops and kisses the back of the girl they have just whipped and says - "Get some sleep, I know I won't." The other cut is after the showers when Luis is sitting under the tree, returns inside and is berated by his mother. The missing shot is a close up and freeze frame of her kissing him, after which he affects a twisted smile. There was also an alternate moment a few minutes later (shot from a different angle) in the scene where Therese is being interrogated by Irene, just before she says Madam Fourneau is going to expel and inform the father of the girl seeing her son. The VHS also presents the main title sequence in red (same font) as 'The Finishing School'and changes the order and the character spelling in the end titlies. The soundtrack, although perfectly synchronized and clearly not 'recorded in front of a fan' (as opposed to the awful English Language bootleg DVD)has many irritating audio anomalies.
