The Six Million Dollar Man : C'mon Universal Studios do it already!

C'mon Universal Studios do it already!

Are the powers that be at Universal Studios blind? This property has a built in audience. Kids of the seventies are the money spending consumers of today. This series was HUGE for my generation. I have spoke to several people of that era and to this day they all speak fondly of the show. People in their twenties are usually not in the loop unless an older sibling or parent has turned them on to it or watched it in reruns. Now all the studio has to do is release it on DVD similar to how they recently did "Airwolf". I love that series also but it has only half the episodes that 6MDM has. I would love to have a DVD with just those episodes with villains like Bigfoot, the robot, the Death Probe, Fembots and the Seven Million Dollar Man. I would love for my kids to be able to watch this with me.

While we are at it they should do a movie. Not a comedy but an updated remake that is serious with modern effects. Stay true to the feel of the show and you could make a new endless frachise updated with the villains mentioned above. I love Jim Carey but not for this role. Don't do a "Dukes of Hazzard" type remake that insults the original. Just as Christopher Reeve guested on "Smallville" ask Lee Majors to be in the project as another character. I could see Brendan Fraser as "Steve Austin" He was good in "The Mummy" another Universal project and can play serious as well as light hearted roles. Whoever plays the role needs to have that "everyman" quality. Do it already! Please.

Re: C'mon Universal Studios do it already!

Did you not know they remade this series a few years back and the name was Jake 2.0 and in the last episode Lee Majors was in it and at the end of that episode they even played that cheesy music where he was using his powers.

Re: C'mon Universal Studios do it already!

Not a new TV show, and yes I saw the program. You say Jake 2.0 and most people go "What?" but you say TSMDM and anybody over 30 years of age knows what it is. Jake 2.0 was a fine show but Steve Austin is classic.

Re: C'mon Universal Studios do it already!

Except Jake NEVER used his powers. He was always whining about being a freak. A good show, but not terribly memorable. Where in the name of Oscar are those damn DVDs?

Six Million Dollar Man series 1 & 2 have been released on DVD in the UK. If your DVD player can play region 2, then I recommend that you fill your boots. Play.com have series 1 & 2 for $50 & $30 respectively.

Re: C'mon Universal Studios do it already!

Six Million Dollars would just about cover the hospital stay today.

Seriously though, I would love A) To see the series remastered and released on DVD and B) To see well done modernretelling of this. Preferably more interestingly and engaging than the dull Bionic Woman series.

Actually, not a series at all for TSMDM, but just a movie.
A good movie.

Why the DVD's are not being released

The reason why The Six Million Dollar Man is not on DVD (as well as the Bionic Woman 1970's version), is because Universal Studios which had paid for the rights to use the characters and ideas first created in the novel Cyborg, written by Martin Caidin, neglected to renew those rights when the contract expired.

Harvey Weinstein, former owner of Miramax Films bought the rights to the novel so he could make a Six Million Dollar Man movie (a farce version starring Jim Carey as Steve Austin). That project fortunately, fizzled out, but either Miramax or Harvey's new company, still owns the rights to the Cyborg novel.

So, if Universal wants to release SMDM or BW on DVD, they must make a deal with Harvey to split the profits, which apparently Universal refuses to do.
It's a copyright type of law which has held up DVD only in United States.

Similar legal shenanigans have held up releasing 1966's Batman TV show and The Green Hornet with Bruce Lee.
Since DC Comics is part of Warner Brother's and the Batman TV show was produced and funded by 20th Century Fox, both companies would have to come to an agreement on the profits.

This greed factor will result in neither parties making any money on these titles, because by the time they make a deal, most of the fans will be dead.

Sad to say, but greed is one of the evils of mankind and always will be.
