Jaws : Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Some of mine (besides Jaws):

Rogue (2007) (really sad this flopped at the box office, at least in cinemas not sure about DVD's etc.)
Black water (2007)
Primeval (2007) (not that great)
Open water (2003)
The Shallows (2016)
The Reef (2010)
Alligator (1980)
12 days of terror (tv movie about the real New Jersey shark attacks)

There's some good shark documentaries out there like the BBC one that showed the shark "Stumpy" attacking a surfboard camera rig.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

The Edge
Grizzly
Day of the Animals
Cujo
Food of the Gods
The Pack

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Jaws stands out as a great film in an otherwise mostly terrible genre (shark movies, killer animals movies).

The only other "killer animal" movie that I can say that I liked was The Edge, where Anthony Hopkins is stalked by an Alaskan brown bear ("played" by the late, great, Bart the Bear).

If I had to pick a runner-up to Jaws as far as shark movies go, it would probably be Open water, which was decent but not great. I haven't yet seen 12 days of terror, is it any good?

It's ok for a tv movie, follows the real incident quite closely. There's also another one about the subject called Blood in the water, or something. Not sure. That one was ok too.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Venom (1981) a horror thriller where Klaus Kinski & Oliver Reed play kidnappers who kidnap this rich kid who has bought home a deadly black mamba instead of a pet snake. A cop is sent there to warn the kid just as they are kidnapping him so Reed shoots him which alerts the cops, so they are trapped in the house and the mamba has gotten loose. It's currently on Youtube.

I thought the movie was very badly made (the near-final scene of Kinski wrapping the rubber snake around his body to simulate the attack is absolutely ridiculous, to name just one of many such examples), but it had a couple of saving graces. First, the actual mamba footage. Second, it's always fun to watch actors like Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed, Sterling Hayden, and Nicol Williamson ham it up and chew the scenery, even if the movie itself is rather dismal.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

I didn't realise it would be possible to have such a list. I don't even think of Jaws as a 'killer animal' movie, just an excellent thriller.

I have to question your apparent liking of Jaws if it's part of that list of the mediocre & shyte alongside it.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

It's not a horror film, as countless other threads have demonstrated. If anything it's a thriller, but I've never seen why every film has to be compartmentalised into a specific genre. People love their compartments, which is odd.

Human nature.

Our brains seeks patterns

they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Well Jaws originally was basically a big budget b-movie. That in a way is where it started from. Because it was so good and struck a chord, it became a classic. I don't analyse it any more then that.

So IMHO it's ok to look at the category of "killer animal" - movies because, well there is such a category. And Jaws revitalized it.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

There's only such a category because someone has decided there is, but I prefer the more straightforward categories of excellent, good, average, bad or terrible movie. Most movies about killer animals are terrible - Orca Killer Whale, Cujo, & Jaws 3 & 4 to name but a few - so to lump Jaws in with those piles a shyte seems a bit harsh & insulting.

By stating that it is indeed a killer animal movie, is it not then, in your opinion, a thriller, horror, suspense, drama or whatever movie? It has thrills & moments of horror, bits of dramaperhaps there should be a separate Killer Animal / Thriller / Drama & good category, instead of Killer Animal typically shyte one? Perhaps not

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Where did I say I hated horror movies?

Why isn't it a cop movie? Or a cop on a boat movie? McQ & Striking Distance eg both have cops on boats in them. There's far more cop than shark, & the film is certainly centered around Brody.

Perhaps it should be a family movie, as there's a strong family element to it.

If not, perhaps it could be a beach movie. Etc.

There are some, though not many, excellent films which could be described as horror if you so wished - Alien & The Shining for example - but most, including Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street etc, are terribleso no, it's not a genre I get excited over.

Killer Animal Horror! Geez, you sound about 13. Can you not just enjoy the film on its own without getting a hard-on due to the thought of categorising it? If you see it as a similar movie to Cujo then you've got problems.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Every other movie about sharks eating people are considered horror.

By whom, & why are you so keen to jump on their bandwagon?

Why are you so keen for a classification at all? Can you not enjoy it unless you know it is without question a horror movie?

I've just seen a couple of movies from your rated sectionJesus H, you seriously watched all that shyte? No wonder you can't see anything else in Jaws bar the blood.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

There would be a killer animal movie - genre completely outside of my decision to come up with one. In a separate time-space continuum where I would not exist, there would still be a killer animal movie - genre.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Only because people like you say there is & have a hard-on for lists.

I still can't understand why you can't just think of them as movies; what benefit to your viewing or cinematic appreciation does categorising films this way have?

Do you file your DVDs / Blu-rays into categories too? If not, why not?

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

There will always be categories, genres, ratings, etc. It's inevitable.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Sure there will be, but that doesn't mean you have to take any notice of them.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Do you believe in a 'canon' of great films then? That's one type of category.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Ha, now we're getting a little tenuous. If it were, then there'd be a Top 10 Good Films, which would be tautological, silly & ultimately meaningless.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004), yes it's a sequel, but it's pretty intense in places, but with a sense of fun as well. Jaws fans will love it and also the scene where a character references Jaws, just before, wellsee the movie and you can see for yourself.

That's right! You're about to be killed by a zamboni!

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

Er, no thanks. I'm not sure why anyone could bear to sit through exactly the same rubbish again if they had the misfortune to watch the truly dire original. Comparing it with Jaws is most unfair on the latter; you may as well compare dogshyt with fillet steak.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

This sequel is even better than the J-LO original though. Just watch it!

That's right! You're about to be killed by a zamboni!

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

I'd have to be pretty drunk, & since I hardly ever drink it seems unlikely, but given my occasional inclination to watch & laugh at terrible films, like those with Steven Segal, I could approach it with the same attitude

The Grey

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

That was interesting. Didn't like the CGI wolves though, one would think it wouldn't be that much more expensive to have real wolves but maybe they wouldn't look menacing enough or whatever.

Re: Your other favorite killer animal - movies

I agree, I liked the wolves better when you didn't see them. When you just saw their eyes or heard them howling they were great but sometimes they didn't look convincing.
