Jaws : Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

I mean he came to Brody!s house uninvited sat down at his table and asked is anybody eating referring to the plate of food. First of I would of been embarrassed saying that in someone's home especially when you don't know that person that's just my opinion. Does anybody else agree??

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

nohe did after all bring wine.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

This.

Moreover, he could have been a complete douche had he simply just helped himself without asking first.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

No, not at all. Ordinary conventions concerning social niceties tend to be the first thing to go when a shark's in the water.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

He couldn't find a good restaurant. Take heart- he ended up eating pretzels.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

How were your few days on the Aurora, Phy? Is it still a floating asylum?

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

Managed to not die, but then I'm not a (formerly) living legend so I guess I was safe. Other than that, it's hot. Damn hot! Real hot! Hottest things is my shorts. I could cook things in it. A little crotch pot cooking.

Well, can you tell me what it feels like?

Fool, it's hot! I told you again! Were you born on the sun? It's damn hot! I saw - It's so damn hot, I saw little guys, their orange robes burst into flames. It's that hot! Do you know what I'm talking about.

What do you think it's going to be like tonight?

It's gonna be hot and wet! That's nice if you're with a lady, but it ain't no good if you're in the jungle.

You?

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

Actually I did find that a little awkward. I also got the impression he bought the wine more for himself although Brody drank most of it! I have very good table manners so I was bound to find that a little awkward but in a sense it was also quite comical.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

At least he didn't help himself to Brody's wife as he did in the novel!!!

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

As soon as I read that I could hear Hooper saying "Is anyone eating this?"

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

LOL!! I was thinking the same thing.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

Nah. He was invited even if informally.

If he had taken a doggiebag, now that would have been tactless.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

This same issue has been raised a number of times here. Personally, I don't think it was rude per se. Sure if Hooper had done the same thing in Buckingham Palace it would have been a different story.

By that point in the film, Hooper and Brody had gotten to know each other quite well. So there was no need for formality. Secondly, after Mrs. Kintner slapped Brody in public earlier that day, Hooper knew how Brody must be feeling, especially since it was mostly the Mayor's fault.

So Hooper was just trying to act casual and lighten the mood, make small talk, helping himself to the meal. Like a family member. If Hooper had acted all formal and not do anything, then it probably might have ended up being an awkward situation since Brody wasn't in the mood to talk, Ellen was concerned about Brody, so it would have been the three of them just sitting there staring at each other.

"I'm the dude, playing a dude that's disguised as another dude".

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

The "How was your day?" line after that bit of awkward silence was perfect.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

Particularly since that was the question most on Ellen's mind, one she couldn't get an answer for from Martin. Yet Hooper swans in and gets a 'swell' straight off the bat. It's no wonder Ellen started nit picking Martin

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

I read it as Hooper's quest for food in Amity. He had been unsuccessful in getting anything to eat since he arrived that morning and starvation overrode propriety. It seems he still didn't get to eat the chicken dinner before going down to the docks, and tried to fill up on pretzels from his boat's pantry.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

That's sort of how I read it. He showed up for dinner, and it was clear that Martin hadn't even touched his food, when everyone else was done. So, he ate it. He's a young bachelor, probably can't cook, and was living in a hotel on the island and hadn't had a good home cooked meal. I didn't find it a douchey thing to do; I thought it was endearing, that he was that comfortable with them.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

No not really and after all he did bring wine. Hooper was a bit of an oddball but there are a lot of oddballs in the film including the shark itself. Jaws was defiantly not your average giant shark.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??

I mean hes kinda douchey in a certain way but its kinda like hes a lovable douchebag lol.

Re: Does anybody think Hooper was dougebag??
