The Tenant : Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

Really didn't sound like her at all. She sounded quite English in this. Was just curious to know if she was dubbed or not.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

It is her voice all right, as far as I can tell. She's supposed to be fluent in English. On the other hand, some of Trelkovsky colleagues' voice are dubbed, most notably Gerard Jugnot's and Balasko's.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

I don't think it's her voice. What I've seen of her from the period, she always had a heavy accent, including the English language version of Nosferatu (1979), the American movie The Driver (1980), and the movie Possession with Sam Neill...all of which she has a much heavier accent than you hear in this movie.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

In the remake of 'Diabolique' (Yes, I'm the one person who likes it and owns it), she speaks fluent English live on film, and has a barely noticeable accent.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

no that's definitely Adjani's voice. She speaks English in the film "Possession" too, for comparison. All of the main characters in "The Tenant" speak English, with some of the minor background characters overdubbed.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

maybe the only thing about this film that bothers me...

it's set in (Paris) France, and of course all of the street and business signs, etc. are in french, but you hardly hear a word of french spoken.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

She dubs herself in the French language version.

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

and she's dubbed by another actress in the English version, according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tenant#Production_notes

Re: Was Isabelle Adjani dubbed?

This is partly discussed in a thread called "Language" on the The Tenant board.
