Dredd : This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

This movie really reminded me of the first Robocop, the distopian future, the crimes, drugs, the police, the grime and the over the top violence

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

This is the film that should have been made in the eighties, had Robocop not been made.

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

It really is a shame that Robocop beat the character of Judge Dredd to the screen, but I don't have any resentment against it!

Just watch Dredd as a double-bill with Robocop and think of Robocop as a prequel!

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

Google the connection between 80s RoboCop and Judge Dredd, and you will find exactly why you got reminded of RoboCop, or vice versa.

RoboCop was supposed to be a Dredd movie, but plans changed and it became RoboCop.
They even had a Dredd outfit made at some point, but that never got used.

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

Thats really cool, I always felt like Robocop was a precursor to the Terminator series, but now I can see the Judge was there first. I love little details like that one, I've always been fascinated by that character and universe but never read too many of the comics, was far too busy reading others.

Countless cross-overs have been done in the comics, one I would like to see in a movie setting: Alien vs Terminator, right at the point where the Terminators are about to extinguish/assimilate the last of humanity, the Aliens show up, then its not our story, all too often its about us, not this time. The opening trailer scene is of a Terminator stepping on human skull, crushing it to dust, then the Aliens arrive. The real question is how do they get there, do the Predators drop them off just for fun?

@DethstruXioN I had no idea. That explains RoboCop's look, as well as the elements of satire.

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

As I recall, Robocop started out as a script for a Judge Dredd adaptation. The rights to the comics cannot be secured, however, and changes were made to turn it into an original property.

Very true syafiqjabar, Ed Neumeier pretty much admitted as much in interviews.

This book is invaluable, if you wish to reasearch Judge Dredd's tortured journey to the screen:

I'm glad I'm clearly not the only one who felt this way.

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

@debabrata4747 Don't forget Dredd saying, "You now have 20 seconds to comply." I took that as a nod to ED-209.

Re: This is the true spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven's Robocop

Exactly, I also think that was intentional, it was a nice touch, cant get enough of Robocop (good ones)
