Superman : Why was Council so against leaving Krypton?

Why was Council so against leaving Krypton?

I know it's silly question, but I never understood why they were so adamant about not leaving. Also why would Jor-El care what the council thought or did if he and his wife left with Kal-El (Clark)? He and his family leave, council is mad but would be dead in minutes so what repercussions would there be? I'm not trying to be critical as these early scenes in the movie are my favorite. I'm just wondering if there are more details (in comics or deleted scenes) that explain why they decided to allow their entire advanced civilization to be destroyed. Their kind could have easily taken over the earth (now there's movie idea!).

"The end of the shoelace is called the...IT DOESN'T MATTER!"

Please don't feel silly as I've always wondered about this too!

Re: Why was Council so against leaving Krypton?

Often wondered this myself...everytime I watch Superman's origin, in fact. The Council must have been in serious denial. If one of our top scientists told me the Earth was in serious danger, I would take notice and not dimiss it outright.

Re: Why was Council so against leaving Krypton?

They weren't against leaving, they just weren't convinced that the whole planet was coming to an end. JorEl was the head scientist and he failed to convince them but he knew, so he sent his son to safety.

Re: Why was Council so against leaving Krypton?

Same reason as Pomeii and the Titanic, no one believed that anything terrible could happen to the city or the giant ship till it hit them and too late. Also they probably had no were else to go unless Jor-El made a suggestion but they were against the idea.
