The Amazing Spider-Man : This movie had an 80s vibe.

This movie had an 80s vibe.

I can't quite explain what it was, but this movie reminded me very much of an eighties movie that just happened to be set now. Anyone else see it?

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

It could be the pacing, but now that I think about it, the visuals are a large part of it, too. The sequel was lacking in that regard.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

Honestly if the Lizard wasn't a sh-tshow CGI thing and they went with practical fx it would almost be as if David Cronenberg made a Spider-Man movie.

Now I want to download this movie and throw and old times filter on and give it a watch.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

I see what you mean with the Cronenberg comparison. The Lizard would have looked ridiculous with practical effects, though.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

Never got that feeling once while watching this. It seems fitting to this era and that will be it. It will soon start to age very bad with all those winks to current tech and teen agnst kids share nowadays.

Are You Watching Closely? You're an idiot

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

Of course it will age. Just as any movie eventually will. When I watch movies made when I was a teenager that I have a sentimental attachment to, I sometimes smile at noticing how different certain things are, be it the music, the clothes, a shot of a place that no longer exists, etc. That's just how things go. Singling this movie out saying it will "age very bad(ly)" is stupid. Like all films, it's a product of its time.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

I think the James Horner score had something to do with it, too. I associate his music style with the movies I liked as a kid as he did so many.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

No. It doesn't.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

I personally thought it had more of a *beep* movie vibe" to tell you the truth.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

Thanks for your intelligent contribution to this thread. It was certainly illuminating.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

I think this movie will age worse then the Tobey Maguire 2002 version. While you can tell the Tobey film is from the early 2000s, I dunno it still doesn't feel "dated"....at least in a bad way.

How so? I don't recall many things about this movie that specifically scream "2012". Sam Raimi's movie, on the other hand, screams "2002". Not that this is a bad thing, mind you. I was 19 then, and enjoying myself.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

To me it feels pretty '90s, when the comic books but also other media were trying pretty hard to be really modern and revisionist.

Nineties? How so?

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

Trying pretty hard to be hip, darker than past versions, an emphasis on big and long-running conspiracies and somewhat on the potential dangers of science. Unique to the Spider-Man comics (but with similar things elsewhere) there was increased emphasis on Peter's parents and then they returned in the early '90s.

Re: This movie had an 80s vibe.

TASM feels like from the era of Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, The X Files, Burton Batman, Coppola's Dracula, maybe early angsty DiCaprio while I think the Raimi films feel more '80s a lot of which itself felt more timeless (although maybe because I'm farther away from them) (Reeve Superman, Raiders, E. T., some John Hughes).

As I understand it, the new Spider-Man movie will be influenced by the works of John Hughes. There's even a publicity shot of the young cast recreating 'The Breakfast Club' poster.
