Is that what 'gay' tend to be?
Just as many gay people can as disinterested in "kitsch" and unrefined as non-gay people, nor interested in show-tunes and "Lady Gag". You must mean the stereotypes. Well, hopefully the stereotypes don't outnumber the non-stereotypes.

Re: Famous with the gay culture
I can't imagine why. It's essentially a romantic comedy, but a low budget one. I've not heard that it's popular with fringe culture.
*EDIT*
The one thing that did really bug the crap out of me was the so-called "glam rock" BS. That was just really uncalled for.

Re: Famous with the gay culture
That's news to me.
Most of the people I know who like it are hetero.
As if it matters

Re: Famous with the gay culture
Hmmmm..
It can't be the initial Dirty Dancing equivalent masterful choreography; that would be downright insulting. And it can't be the masterful special theatrical makeup, several of the male dancers wore.
I can see how some of the gay community would get turned on by the heavy artiness, but that is sure-fire normal. Hetero's are attracted to it as well, which is why so many of them probably auditioned for A Chorus Line (or at least wanted to) - simply to flirt with the pretty Chorus Line ladies.

Re: Famous with the gay culture
That fact that this movie is famous with gays is just silly. I don't know who put that in the trivia but its really a dumb claim to make. It's neither a hetero or gay movie. The cult following stems from the fact that the music is great, it's Gene Kelly's last performance and of course ONJ.

Re: Famous with the gay culture
I think if you were a kid and had HBO in the 80s you might have a soft spot for this movie. It was on ALL THE TIME, as I remember.
Re: Famous with the gay culture
I can't speak on behalf of others, but I have two main reasons to love this movie:
1) Olivia Newton-John: Her sweet presence alone is radiant, refreshing in anything, let alone her beauty, charm and voice (either speaking or singing). I don't think I would have seen this more than once had it been starred by another actress. She's definitely one of a kind and the perfect choice to play a supernatural character.
2) Electric Light Orchestra: most underrated band ever, IMHO. Their music was pure magic. The ONJ-ELO combination for the "Xanadu" song is epic, unsurpassable. Wish they had recorded a full album together, like Streisand and the Bee Gees.
I like Gene Kelly quite a bit, too, but I'm far from being his #1 fan, so I could only mention him as a nice, welcome plus.
As for the leading man, this was the only movie I've seen him in, so I'm not sure either it was the character or the actor's fault, but I've found him to be completely unappealing.

Re: Famous with the gay culture
ONJ wa Madonna and Lady Gaga of the 70s. She has videos with her in various costume and personas. She was one of the trailblazers. Gay people love this movie because it is fantasy. With a great commercially successful soundtrack. I own a classic pop culture gallery. This album is made into a spiral notebook, in my ETSYPOPSHOP.
She was fresh off Grease (1978) and she really turned it out in both.
The Twist Of Fate video is one of my favorites. Unfortunately the film is not even a cult hit.

Re: Famous with the gay culture
It's campy. It's Olivia. It's disco roller skating. It's silly fun. They made it into a Broadway musical. All things we gays enjoy.
Just because you're not in touch with the world around you and you aren't aware that this is a very popular movie in gay circles doesn't mean it isn't. There actually doesn't have to be a reason for it it can just be that way.

I'm straight and I am a HUGE fan of this film. I LOVED ONJ in Grease, but after I saw her in Xanadu, I became a HUGE fan of hers from that point on.
