Porky's : Last of a dying breed

Last of a dying breed

Porky's was one of the last pure teen aged sex romps. It was the kind of movie that everyone knew had lots of sex and nudity. It was not a great movie or even a particularly good movie (note that other than Kim Catrall, no one in the cast ever did anything else notable). Its purpose was to be an "R" sex movie that teens would have to sneak into. The characters, like the movie were deliberately dirty minded and they did not learn any lessons, they just had fun and in the end, got back at their nemesis. There were other teen movies which were "clean" coming-of-age films where sex was hinted at or even discussed, but never shown.

One year later an unknown director and a first time screen writer got together and made a little film called "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Fast Times was almost as raunchy as Porky's, but it was also a life-lesson-teaching coming-of-age movie and a great one. Ever since its release, teen and high school movies routinely work both ways. American Pie, for example, is extremely raunchy, but lessons are learned and ages are come of.

Re: Last of a dying breed

What's amazing is that Alex Karras and Susan Clark went on to play a married couple who adopted Emmanuel Lewis on "Webster". I had a hard time watching that show as I could only picture Susan Clark as Cherry Forever!

One year later? Fast Times at Ridgemont High was released in 1982, 5 months after Porky's.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Yeah, but Fast Times was meant to be one of those warning films for youths, not a comedy. That was accidental.

It`s far easier to start a war than to end one.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Wait - you're saying "Fast Times" is supposed to be a cautionary tale?

Ummm, NO.

Yup, I really enjoyed this movie. There's just this feel-good attitude throughout the film, everybody's going for the laugh, and it's contagious... :)

Re: Last of a dying breed

Yes this movie is a feel good attitude throughout the film. It is a shame that they do not make movies like this anymore. Now they want to tone it down and not show any nudity at all which I do not agree with at all. If you are going to have sexual innuendos then show the nudity to help out the movie.

Re: Last of a dying breed

I love Porkys, but I do not know that they do not make movies like this anymore, just not often overall. In 1999 American Pie came out, then Road Trip and a few others came out that were not as good. I think Porky's was way ahead of its time for being a raunchy teen comedy. The others I mention owe a debt to Porky's.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Yes you are correct about that because the Porky's franchise was the first of the teen comedies that was very well written and directed by the late great Bob Clark. Still the Porky's of the 80's is far better than the teen comedies of today. A lot more nudity was used in the 80's compared to now.

Re: Last of a dying breed

I have to agree with you that PORKY'S of the 80's is far better than the movies they make today. The problem with todays film companies is that they want to make the movies more for people who are like 17 on down to 13 years old. Plus, some of the things they do today is all "Politically Correct" now which I do not like at all to be honest with you about it.

I just completed my first film script called THE POSSESSION OF INNOCENCE and have a page up on Facebook under the title of the movie. If you would like to know who has been casted for each role in the movie then please take the time to check it out to support the process of this movie being made. Thank you for your time, help, and support.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Casted? There is no such word as "casted." The word is always "cast." Same as "cost."

Re: Last of a dying breed

Nudity is actually pretty common in film, just not in the US since the counter-counter-revolution of the Reagan/AIDS era when the Sexual Revolution in America died and reactionary politics took over.

Re: Last of a dying breed

You should know Boyd Gaines, who plays the coach who "does" Kim Catrall, has had a long career on TV and on Broadway.

Re: Last of a dying breed

ANIMAL HOUSE still rules!

Re: Last of a dying breed

Animal House will always be one of the tops, but I'd rate Porky's quite close to it.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Yep, I'm thinking about seeing Porky's after all these years but I feel I may be disappointed because 'Animal House' is the Granddaddy of them all.

You'll never find enough wool to knit a sweater in a girl's locker room these days. People are afraid of pubic hair for some unnatural reason.

I don't think anyone anywhere is afraid of pubic hair so much as its the progession of unwanted body hair on females... such as women shaving their legs, armpits, etc.

Now, if you're the type of guy who likes a more shaggy female who prefers NOT to shave, well, anything on her body, more power to you.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Last of dying breed? The 80s were littered with these sex romps. Of course, most of them failed to be as entertaining as Porky's but they still exist.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Ive always said that Porkys was the best ever in this genre of films. Everyone always goes the Animal House route because of who was in it but this blew that movie out the door. It was so much more entertaining. It was really ahead of its time, it somehow all worked and it always ended with them doing the right thing. Yea, it wasnt going to win any awards but you couldnt help but laugh your butt off and root for these guys.

Re: Last of a dying breed

I thought this was one of the first movies of this kind

Re: Last of a dying breed

I feel like if you tried to make a movie like this today everyone would go insane. You'd see people calling the kids terrorists for what they did at the end. In today's version you'd have to have a swat team come and shoot them all with belt fed machine guns and tanks.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Just got the Blu-ray... saw this in the theater with my dad when I was a kid. He was cool like that. We saw everything I probably shouldn't have seen but it was GREAT! This movie brings back so many memories and yes it is raunchy in a good way and does have a through line and a positive message. The mayhem is balanced with a moral compass within the friendship and loyalty between the characters. In the end, they do the right thing because it matters. That's what Bob Clark knew all too well and he was ahead of his time with this type of film. Porky's was the first and still one of the very best. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

Agreed 100%.

Long live the 70's!

Re: Last of a dying breed

Animal House came out on 1978 and was way better than this. This is a good movie though.

Re: Last of a dying breed

Cameron Crowe was undercover and working on the screenplay for Fast Times before Porky's was even conceived of, so it wasn't derivative in any way if that's your implication. But it has aged horribly in a way that Porky's hasn't, maybe because Porky's is a period piece to begin with.
