The Funhouse : Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

After having this film recommended to me by many, as well as it having nearly a 6/10 rating on here AND being directed by Tobe Hooper I went in to it with my expectations set pretty high. Sadly this film is a great example of how hype can kill a film. This movie had no suspense, bad lighting, unlikeable and annoying characters, bad story, terrible script, the killer/monster looked like the thing from the goonies.. I can't think of one thing good about this film. I mean I guess it had the barebones laid out for it to be good but it just couldn't deliver. How could you possibly make a bad horror film that takes place within a carnival haunted house? The answer is.. The funhouse. I doubt I'll ever check out the remake but I betcha it's better than this.

No, that distinction belongs to The Prowler.

Thank you. I think The Prowler is a decent flick, but I had so many unfulfilled expectations when I first watched it. It's definitely overrated IMO. I think the main attraction for people is the gore in it; that shower scene is brutal. But there are so many films of the era that surpass it in other respects.

Give me Happy Birthday To Me, Deadly Blessing, Hell Night , any day over this.

Those are excellent movies, especially because they choose atmosphere over gore.

Happy Birthday to Me? Deadly Blessing? Hell Night? Now it makes sense...those movies are terrible!
The Funhouse is a classic compared to that 80s trash you listed.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Deadly Blessing received decent reviews. The Funhouse nor Deadly Blessing were "slashers"

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I loved it.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

The Funhouse is definitely a slasher movie.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I haven't seen it in awhile , and don't' recall slashing of bodies with blood spurting

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

A movie doesn't need that to be classified as a slasher film though. The Funhouse has a killer, a group of teens getting stuck in a Funhouse being knocked off one by one. It's always been grouped in with the films from the golden age of the slasher movie.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Its a slasher. It just happens to be one with a low body count.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Not terrible at all

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

What?? If anything this is underrated.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Agreed! I don't know anyone outside of IMDb that knows a damn thing about this film.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I think a movie depends on the mind frame for sure and when you watch said film. I first watched this film when I was eight years old...i personally love the chatoicness of the funhouse after the supporting girl character falls through the floor, trapped in the vents and the ending sequence with the turning of the funhouse gears (which is a hooper trademark as he often used a mechanical sound (chainsaw) to insight terror) the ending is also very bleak.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I just watched it for the first time a couple of days ago. I went in with no expectations because I didn't know anything about it.

I loved it! I expected a typical, boring '80's teen slasher, but instead, I got something with depth, with a good look (I liked the lighting), and plenty of suspense. I do wish they'd disposed of that little kid somehow, but that's just nitpicking. 😃

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I like this movie, but I agree about the teenagers. They were hella cocky.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Most overrated slasher of the early 80s? Give me a break. Ever see any of the Friday the 13th sequels? Those are the most overrated slashers of the 80s.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

It's underrated.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I really like this film and find it underrated as a matter of fact. It doesn't get anywhere near the same amount of attention as other films from the era like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween II when it's really just as good. I didn't even know there was a remake anyways.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

If anything I think it's underrated, the first time I saw it didn't like it that much but it has grown on me after a few viewings.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

I just saw this for the first time. I really wanted to like it being that I like most of Hooper's work, but unfortunately I was disappointed by this. And before anyone attacks me for being young and not being able to appreciate it, I'm in my 30s and I'm a huge fan of slasher (and more general horror) films from the 70s and 80s- even the bad ones.

I felt that overall it just wasn't that scary. If you took out the sex and nudity it would almost be child-friendly, or at the very least PG-13. Minus the sex and maaaaybe a smidge of the violence it could have been an extended episode of Amazing Stories or something.

The ending under the funhouse annoyed me as well. The girl just stood there screaming helplessly most of the time and the whole sequence dragged on way too long.

This seems like the type of movie that had I seen it when I was young I might hold it in higher regard now. There are a lot of movies from that period that are arguably of lower quality than this that I still love, even if only for nostalgic reasons. Seeing it now though it just didn't connect with me.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

i totally know what you mean how we as kids watched '80s horror movies and then we loved them even if they aren't that good bc we were kids and this definitely seems like one of those movies.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

Well, it is one of my favorites, if not one of the best by my tastes.

The film is tense and atmospheric and while it might seem a little sluggish at times, the skill with which it was rendered makes it all work beautifully. The characters might be jerks, but pay attention to their rapport. They paid the ultimate price as well and that is keeping in line with the slasher theme of the era, due to what their behavior dictates. Have sex you die! Act like a jerk, you die! Have sex and act like a jerk and there is no escape your impending doom.

It was a film about observation and circumstance and the film is really more terror than slasher horror, like Hoopers TTCM.

The Funhouse is a one of a kind.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

yeah i was very disappointed by it bc i had high expectations going in. it's a boring movie. and it seems to want to be scary yet it's not, it's silly and hokey.

maybe i'll change my mind the 2md time i watch it.

Re: Most overrated slasher of the early 80's

For me, its one of those movies that it impresses when you first see it. If it didnt then I doubt the second viewing would make a difference.
