Grease 2 : Soundtrack killed this movie

Soundtrack killed this movie

Musicals are all about the songs. The songs in Grease were great, the songs in Grease 2 were mediocre. I dare say that if Grease 2 would have had a killer soundtrack, it would be viewed as on par with the original.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

the singing voices in the movie are horrible. we couldnt get through the entire movie.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

Woah, you mean a musical with a killer soundtrack would be considered a great movie ? I never even considered that.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

I disagree. The music is far less steeped in the time period.
Most of the songs in Grease were taken straight from the stage musical.
In Grease 2, I can't recall any major song sounding like it was from 1962--maybe "Brad", "Prowlin'" and "Girl For All Seasons", but they were all snippets written for the talent show, so they had to sound at least a little authentic.
The music is otherwise non-specific in its genre, although it has strong early-80s elements.

Grease also has many songs that were just "fillers". Just check out the soundtrack details.

I personally think "We'll be Together" is one of the nicest melodies I've ever heard. The chorus has that power-ballad, anthemic quality; it's a great closing number.
It's kind of wasted in such a flop of a movie.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

Not necessarily. There have been plenty of musical films that had great songs that didn't do well at the box office. To use an example of another early 80s sequel to a classic 70s musical: Shock Treatment, the sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Overall, the songs in Shock Treatment were better than the original, but other problems hurt it.

But, yes, a musical needs great, memorable, songs, and the closest thing Grease 2 had to one was Cool Rider. And, even that was a rather generic early 80s song.

And, as someone else said, there's the lack of an early 60s feel to the songs in something that's supposed to take place, then.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

The "Grease" soundtrack was a double album. I wonder if there was any thought of making the "Grease 2" soundtrack a double.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

I would love to know if any songs were deleted.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

I actually like most of the songs, in the same "guilty pleasure" sort of a way that I liked the Spice Girls.

I would describe Grease 2 songs as corny and cheesy but funny. Especially reproduction, and the air raid shelter one..

Where as I'd describe Grease songs as being better in a traditional sense but taking themselves way too seriously, to the point where they start to become a bit lame.

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

I liked the sound track actually

Re: Soundtrack killed this movie

I like the soundtrack, too.
