Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi : Marketed as Final Film
Re: Marketed as Final Film
There was suppose to be another three after Return of the Jedi, that what George Lucas said in one of many interviews before he sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney.
Re: Marketed as Final Film
There is an interview with Mark Hamil in 1980 around when empire strikes back came out where he briefly mentions the prequels. So george Lucas had the the idea all the way back then. Interesting though he mentions that there would be a 4-5 year old Luke sky walker in them, so they turned out quite differently than he imagined.

Re: Marketed as Final Film
It was known sort of. Everyone heard of the 1-3, 4-6 and 7-9 segments, but it didnt make sense. And before internet you had no way of checking up what your Brothers friend was saying, and how true it was.
Lucas DID make 2 more star wars films, the two Ewok films. And after that they made DROIDS. Then we got the video games X-wing, Tie Fighter and a crapload of other SW Products, such as novels and Comics. I never could believe why Lucas didnt make a few more films.
Dark Empire, had a nice Movie-like plot about Luke falling to the dark side, the emperor reborn in a cloned body, and a pregnant light sabre wielding Leia who rescued Luke from the dark side, With enhanced force Power from her baby in vitero.
Anyway, they eventually made Shadows of the Empire, a release that contained everything except the Movie (even a trailer!). And realized the Money was there for the grabbing, and thus we got the prequels Garbage.

Re: Marketed as Final Film
Revenge of the Sith was marketed as the final Star Wars for a while too.
If Bon Scott of AC/DC was still alive, he would be a Brony.

Re: Marketed as Final Film
It was known in sci-fi magazines like Starlog, Empire Strikes Back Topps trading cards and other related media of the day that George Lucas stated there would be 9 Star Wars films in total. Lucas talked about it when explaining the "Episode V" title on ESB back in 1980.
When ROTJ came out it felt like it was going to be the final film for awhile, but no one thought it would be 16 years before the Prequels.
