Red Dawn : Would have been interesting…

Would have been interesting…

If a Red Dawn 2 had been filmed that took place during these events but in another locale, such as California or maybe even from the point of view of American soldiers on the front lines (Band of Brothers-ish). Especially with option 2 the audience could have understood at the strategic level what was going on rather than just at a small tactical/guerilla level and what Powers Booth's character discussed.

As a kid I'd visualize what had happened in Europe and China during the war. Plus, I had the old Fortress America game and my brother and I would fiercly defend Denver at all costs depending on who was playing America.

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.

Re: Would have been interesting…

Did the film offer an explanation for NATO's demise? NATO is a military treaty/organization designed to prevent the scenario in the film - one country (actually two if you include Canada) from facing a Soviet invasion alone. I know Powers Booth's character says Europe is "sitting this one out." I didn't find that explanation as believable. During the time period of the film, mid-80s, NATO had thousands of troops based in West Germany to defend against a Soviet invasion. Had the U.S. and Canada been invaded, hostilities would have begun in the European theatre almost immediately.

Re: Would have been interesting…

It's mentioned that Greens get elected in most Western European countries and essentially pull out of NATO. This was, in fact, their platform at the time.

In real life, the Greens did get seats in several European parliaments, including West Germany, but were never anywhere near popular enough to form a government.
