Black Mirror : What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

I would say it is a tie between White Bear and Shut up and Dance.

White Bear:

I used to be the person who would say "punishment should fit the crime," but this episode made me really do some soul searching. The point of punishment should be for rehabilitation, not torture. She forgets everything that happens, so they don't want her to repent, they want her to suffer.

At what point are the viewers of her torment just as guilty as she was? The judge said that she was a vile person who took pleasure in watching the torture of the girl. Isn't that exactly what the spectators are doing? Taking pleasure in watching somebody being tortured? I understand it is different because she is a criminal and they are not, but....what does that say about the society that people would pay money to go and watch this elaborate torture?

Shut Up and Dance:
This one is pretty self explanatory......you feel bad for him because you think he is being held hostage for something everybody does, but then you find out it was something completely different. Also, at what point are the hackers guilty? They forced two people to fight to the death, and they enjoyed tormenting and controlling all of the participants.

Honorable Mention, 15 Million Merits:
Everybody has a price. You can claim you will never budge, but deep down everybody is a sellout. Also, it showed the world (which I thought would be baron) as lush. This means the people CHOSE to live like that because all of the episodes are within the same universe. There are normal ways to live, but instead they chose to be a slave to the bike and "the system."

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

White Bear for me also, and then San Junipero just because it's so beautiful and sad.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

I would Say Playtest hit me the hardest because Alzheimer's runs in my family so when he says he didn't remember anything it hit close to home.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

The Entire History of You

Living with memories of a past relationship with someone you love is something I relate to. The last scenes walking through the home were very heartbreaking to me.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

The Entire History of You, hands down.

It shows that memories can be a sacred but also punishing thing, and sometimes that you would be better off not knowing certain things.

Also defiently a relatable episode for anyone who has been in a relationship.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

I'm sorry but certain people deserve to be tortured. She witnessed and filmed an innocent child being tortured and murdered. Are you a parent? If you were, I think you would understand a bit more.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

Tortured and punished are two completely different things. I want them to be punished and feel remorse for what they did (if they are capable). If you think jail to a person who harms children isn't torture...then idk what to tell you. Jail does NOT treat people who harm children well AT ALL!

There needs to be a line though....and if you didn't think White Bear crossed that line then you are a sick person. A society who tortures people for punishments is no better than the savages committing the crimes. We as a society need to be better than that. Throw them in jail and give them the death penalty that's fine, but to torture a person for punishment....? No.

If I was a parent, in my moments of rage I would probably want that person tortured. I would probably want to do it myself. You walk the line of revenge you pay the price yourself. Don't drag others into the pit.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

Suggest you drop the name-calling. BM episodes go to tech/cultural extremes to be entertaining and thought-provoking.

White Bear was a hard-hitting episode. But let's say they only gave her the treatment ONCE? Would that still have been too much? If not, how many?

The fact that they turned her punishment into mass entertainment is pretty dark and twisted...but this is Black Mirror.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

I didn't call the poster anything...I said if a person believe "insert" they are sick. The poster has not shared his/her opinion on that matter.

See now you are getting to the point. If it was just once, would it have been okay? I'm still not sure...I probably would just turn my back on the matter if it was just for one day. Because she would REMEMBER it, this can feel guilty or remorse. Since her memory is erased every time she feels no remorse, no regret...just torture. I think the memory erasing and the endless torture is what I have a problem with. I don't think a punishment should ever just be torture. Some people will never repent or feel remorse, and those people can rot in jail or have the death penalty for all I care. Some even if they feel remorse should still stay in jail for what they did, but at least the punishment did its job....making you regret your decision. In White Bear she feels no regret because she can't remember.

Kill Hatred with Kindness

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

So somebody that doesn't feel remorse should be murdered? How is that just? Just because somebody has had a bad upbringing or lacks certain emotions doesn't mean they should be mistreated in prison or murdered. The whole idea of prison is supposed to be separating people that can't fit into society with the ones that abide by it. You getting joy out of people suffering in jail doesn't seem very kind to me.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

Where did you read name calling? Be coherent.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

No, clearly prison to a person who harms children isn't torture. There are plenty of child offenders walking about and reoffending. In my opinion, prison is too good for these types of people. There are also prisons now with TV's and cable, is that torture? You sound very detached from reality, have you led a very sheltered life because it sure sounds like it. And you never answered my question, but then again you didn't need to, you are not a parent so you wouldn't understand what a parents got through when losing their child, but I do. Wanting punishment for someone who commits such a crime does not make me sick. Come back to me when you've lived a little.

The first one with the guy making sweet sweet love to a pig.

I just can't eat bacon anymore without pondering if some jolly old wanker's willy has touched my meat.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

But you're okay with a pig's penis being near your meat?

OT: Toss up between 15 Million Merits and White Bear.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

Shut Up and Dance:
I felt bad for the kid from start to finish (I realized it was cp pretty early on) and it was a well made episode.

The Entire History of You:
On two levels. One was general social anxiety and how much we normally tend to be stuck repeating our worst moments, so with this ability they would be immortalized in every witnesses memory and even shared to others, which is just overwhelming. Second is cheating, just a horrifying part of many human's nature that makes me sick. What character was going through really affected me which was the point.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

The marriage broken up by what she did was difficult. You know we have the brain which is the most complicated organ, machine in the universe. It plays memories just like this, we don't need little redos or clickers and contacts. Our minds do this now.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

The Entire History of You:
As someone who is blessed/cursed with a very good memory, I know what it's like to not be able to let go of things you really should.

15 Million Merits:
Best performance of the series was by the lead in that episode. The overall metaphors for modern life were just perfect.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

If not for personal experience, I would never be able to answer this because they all hit hard in their own way. However, BRB is "the one". This is because if I could have, I would have done it. I would have let it all drive me mad, too.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

"The Entire History of You" They say nonverbal communication tells you more than spoken words. 90% to only 10%. Was he just looking for a job, a jealous husband and paranoid he wasn't good enough? He stayed up drinking all night. But, was something go on? At the party, we are listening to the stranger relishing in past sexual episodes while his wife was talking to him when he got there. There was a creepy atmosphere at that party, She led such a lie and the marriage did shatter like a mirror struck by a hammer. I didn't want it to be over, I hate tragedy.

Re: What Episode Hit You the Hardest, and Why??

Nosedive: This is almost society now, so judgemental and obsessed with social status and making their lives look perfect. A friend said "cropping out the bad" I feel like is spot on. You never see the effort and the ugliness that Lacie put into getting to that wedding even if it was for a selfish purpose. I honestly feel like a 3.something lol.

San Junipero: It was such a weird uplifting story that made feel good for the first time in this show. The ending was really bittersweet and bizarre.

No votes for Men against fire?
Terrified me. We already kill the everlovin' *beep* out of each other just for different sky fairies or because of melanin concentrations in our skin or who we love...imagine if the government could make you see them as actual monsters.

I had to *beep* at the beginning of this show, and now I'm not gonna *beep* 'til tomorrow.
