Robert Osborne : Hello Cry Babies

Hello Cry Babies

Everyone seems to be on the hate bandwagon for TCM.

Free Movies 24 hours a day without commercial interuption, without pan and scan and without editing. Why all the fuss? so what if Robt. Osborne wants to retire, so what if someone young and cute wants to introduce a couple of movies on Sat. afternoon? Does it hurt, is their pain involved and if you said "yes" to that question then you've got way bigger problems than you're admitting to.

Lighten up gang, the world spins on and so do the FREE movies.

Seriously, just enjoy.

Re: Hello Cry Babies

As you know, Martian, I wasn't going to bother with a reply but now that IMDb is closing its boards in two weeks I might as well. To your points:

(1) The movies are not free. TCM is a pay channel paid for through your cable or satellite subscription. This is why it's commercial-free. You're paying for it.

(2) TCM does occasionally show something in pan & scan or in an incorrect aspect ratio. Not often, but it happens. It happened in December with the film The Revolt of Mamie Stover, shot in 2.35:1 CinemaScope but run in a 1.33:1 p&s print. TCM ran other films, such as Gidget and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, in p&s or incorrect aspect ratios for years before finally switching to correct prints. There are other examples, past and more recently.

(3) No problem with Robert Osborne "retiring", if that's what he's done. That has nothing to do with Tiffany Vazquez, since Osborne hasn't hosted Saturday afternoons in years and she isn't his replacement Ben Mankiewicz is.

(4) Yes, it is a pain that an unqualified, inept nothing like Tiffany Vazquez has been selected to host Saturday's movies. It's a pain because TCM claims to be the source of information about classic films. When they hire incompetent staff who write flawed descriptions of the movies they're showing it's bad enough. When an on-air host is clearly clueless about her supposed area of expertise that's an outright cheat on the public. That aside, Vazquez is a poor speaker, has no presence, no sense of the camera or how to stand, talk or comport herself. I've been involved in venues requiring public speaking for over 30 years and my wife and I run a company that produces audiobooks. I know something about professional speaking and camera presence. Tiffany Vazquez fails miserably on all counts.

Or do you really think she was the only person in the entire United States qualified to hold this job? TCM has been cutting back on staff by firing capable staffers and hiring inexperienced, unqualified help, both in front of and behind the camera. Tiffany Vazquez is what you get when you put saving money over valuing talent and ability.

It may be enough for you that she's young and "cute" (the latter a matter of opinion unshared by many people, and irrelevant in any case). Obviously your standards are undemanding, to put it mildly. Those of us who ask for our money's worth since we're paying for this channel require something more. Competence, professionalism and knowledge would be good places to start.

You've made your factually inaccurate points, I've responded. Enjoy your fantasies about Tiffany and the notion that the movies you see on TCM are "free" and always shown as made. With time running out here I don't care to waste it debating this subject any longer, especially since there's nothing more to say.

Have a good life. And yes, the movies themselves are worth the price we're paying, even though you don't seem to realize you're one of the people paying for them.

Re: Hello Cry Babies

This is one of the most on-point, valid responses that I've read in my entire life. Kudos, hobnob!

Re: Hello Cry Babies

Thank you very much, Eliot. Or, as Tiffany would say: "Huh?"
