Re: 'You silly moo!'
I love to see Dandy Nichols in anything. I like to see her nag Sidney James in 'Carry on Doctor.' But she is at her best when she is dense and dopey. She really goes beyond Else in that respect in 'The Birthday Party.' Normally I wouldn't watch a Pinter play but she is really brilliant in the 1968 film of the play.
Re: 'You silly moo!'
I saw her perform on Broadway, in "Home," with R. Richardson, J. Gielgud, & Mona Washbourne. I'd never heard of Miss Nichols at the time, but I remember her 'til this day, based on that performance.
Re: 'You silly moo!'
Must have been great to see her perform live. I didn't know that she had worked on stage much. And in such illustrious company too. But I thought she looked quite at home in the filmed 'The Birthday Party' which was written for the stage.
Re: 'You silly moo!'
Yes, it was indeed a theatrical memory I cherish, seeing all four of those remarkable actors together. I tried to find the DVD of "The Birthday Party," I'd love to see that one, but unfortunately not available in Region 1 format (I'm in the US). Thank you so much for your reply, I'd never posted on IMDB before. It seemed to be full of ranting, belligerent loons, I was always put off by them. But fortunately, there's also people like you - cheers, ganglehog!
Re: 'You silly moo!'
Nice compliment. Thank you. It's a pity that 'The Birthday Party' isn't available in Region 1. Dandy Nichols is very good in it. I hope you do get to see it eventually.
Re: 'You silly moo!'
Dandy was a wonderful character actress particularly as Else Garnett. If you ever get the chance please watch her in the BBC mini serial LATE CALL based ion the novel by Angus Wilson. Dandy is outstanding and shows what a brilliant actress she can be given the chance to shine in a lead role. she plays Sylvia Calvert a fat retired landlady forced to live with her son due to her husbands philandering ways. Forced to live in a new town in the early nineteen sixties she try's to cope with a fussy over fearing son (Michael Bryant) who as a rota on whose turn it is to do the washing up etc and who moans if she alters the central heating. A lovely heart felt performance from Dandy. but she can play nasty as well. I remember her starring with Alistair Sim and Annette Crosbie in a PLAY FOR TODAY where she played his bullying landlady of an old retired soldier (sim) she was shockingly good in that as well.

'You silly moo!'
Although the most memorable character was Warren Mitchell's bigoted Alf Garnett, the next best character was Dandy Nichols as his long-suffering wife Else.
I thought Dandy Nichols portrayed the character wonderfully, especially with the looks Else gave Alf, with him constantly referring to her as a "silly moo", and the sharp retorts she came up with to put him in his place!
