Sketch from season 35 episode 6. First scene -aired on tv. Another - different take- from official snl channel on youtube. (i choose only 2 scenes- there is more different takes in sketch). So we see - it's not live it not ever recorded live! - it's made like usual movie with different takes. i guess it always been like that and they lie 40 years to us.
and it was not that special episodes when snl specially says before airing "that episode is prerecoded") - there was such episodes in 1980's with that disclaimer). No - no disclaimer before this episode. So they can lie on all another episodes that " live".

"Live" sports broadcasts are technically not live, either. There is the seven-second broadcast delay to prevent profanities or obscene gestures from being aired. Try watching a baseball game with the sound off while listening to the play-by-play on the radio, which is usually broadcast in true real time. You would swear the radio announcers were psychic.

Radio has a 3 second delay. I believe live broadcast tv has the same 3 second delay but it appears noticeably longer due to transmission time through satellite or cable providers. Back in the days before cable tv, you could turn off the sound on your tv and watch the game while listening to the radio broadcast, which usually had better commentary.

The dress rehearsal on Friday night is also taped. I suspect when after the live episode airs the producers may choose the earlier take for rebroadcasting if it is better.

It is also still funny despite someone's opinion.

The East Coast airing is live. The West Coast airing is not (they specify during the opening credits "recorded from an earlier live broadcast"), and if a sketch didn't play well for some reason during the live airing they may choose to replace it with the dress rehearsal version. It's public knowledge.

ueah that means it's not live. its prerecorded. 99 percent people didnt know that and actors newer said about on the show- that means they lie. everybody thinks that snl is live- from beginning to the end

No rational person thinks that anything that they see on TV is happening in realtime. Only you are insisting that SNL airs completely live from start to finish. And you are wrong. Completely wrong. The fake commercials are not live. The digital shorts are not live. Parts of the monologue can be precorded and spliced in. Hosts have "walked" outside during monologues and the sun has been up!

In fact, everyone knows that most of the show is pre-taped skits and filler at this point. Lorne has admitted it, and people have been laughing about it for years now. An entire dress rehearsal is recorded prior; often the audience reactions are better. So those takes will air, if a set fails, if a host gets sick, if the show is running long or short, at Lorne's whim, etc. When it comes to SNL, "live" means in front of a studio audience and broadcast (in part) over-the-air as close to showtime as possible - preferably before the performance ends.

The show continues to be rewritten until airtime; and things from the dress rehearsal change. The Saturday night show is on a delay. It is not happening in exact realtime - which is technically impossible due to latency in broadcast signal transmission anyway. If something goes wrong with a sketch or musical performance, the prerecorded rehearsal takes can be patched in instantaneously at broadcast time - in part or in whole. The show is fairly well-planned out with contingencies that keep it rolling.

When the show was named, it was far more "live", no tape delay, very little prerecorded bits, etc. The name "Live" stuck while the definition of "live" in regard to TV has had to change - it in no way means that what you see on the screen is happening at the exact same time as you are viewing it - as if you were in the theater. The show is still called SNL on the West Coast despite the 3 hour (and 7 second delay). It is not false advertising because they are not required by law ANYWHERE on the planet to rename the show in order to reair episodes.

All that is required to comprehend this concept is an understanding of the TV-specific sub-definition of "live". It's not live theater, it's live television. This is not arguing semantics. This is understanding them.

Actually, the East Coast airing is still technically live, without any delays. If a sketch misfires during that broadcast, they can't replace it in the moment (Exhibit A: a Kevin Hart-hosted episode from two years ago required Hart to improvise while waiting for a malfunctioning prop to work again), and they don't bleep out any accidental F-words (Kenan Thompson got mad at Samuel L. Jackson for cursing audibly during a "What's Up With That?" sketch).

thay did that to boost ratings i guess. thay didn't blip f-word said by Charles Rocket in 1981, but they have this 7 seconds delay from beginning.
