The Top 10 New Zealand Features - Not Made By Peter Jackson

I think that there are many very worthy New Zealand made features that either are not known, outside of New Zealand, or are put down by Kiwis who feel that quality films are not made in New Zealand - but what do I know. To start this off, here are ten that I think are very worthy.

Boy - 2010
Dean Spanley - 2008
Footrot Flats - 1986
Fracture - 2004
In My Father's Den - 2004
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence - 1984
Perfect Strangers - 2003
The Quiet Earth - 1985
Utu - 1983
The World's Fastest Indian - 2005

As do I, mobrzas1980. It is amongst my top 20 list and I recently obtained the newly released Blu-ray version of it.

2 suggestions:
1)"Whalerider"
Once were warriors"

"Darkness and cold will enfold my weary soul".

Re: The Top 10 New Zealand Features - Not Made By Peter Jackson

Oldeballgame - You will not get an argument from me about the quality of those two films. With an arbitrary limit of 10 titles, something has to be left out. If it had been "The Top 12 New Zealand Features", these two would probably have been included.

Re: The Top 10 New Zealand Features - Not Made By Peter Jackson

Once Were Warriors is definitely the best NZ film in my opinion. A few others:

The Piano - 1993
Heavenly Creatures - 1994
Tracker - 2010
Top of the Lake - 2013 (Mini-Series)

I'm gonna make the biggest god-damn explosion you've ever heard.

RE: peterjs_95

I did not include 'The Piano' so that I did not start an argument about whether it is an Australian or New Zealand film:) I certainly recognise that it is a first class film.

I already commented on 'Heavenly Creatures'.
Since 'Top of the Lake' is a TV mini-series, I did not consider including it.

For me 'Tracker' was a bit of a disappointment. I feel that it is not equal to the ones I had mentioned, but it is certainly well worth watching, especially given where it was shot. Not knowing how you viewed 'Tracker', I would suggest that if it was via the R2 DVD, you should see the R1 or Blu-ray to receive the most the film has to offer (assuming you have not had a theatrical experience).

How about An Angel at My Table (1990).
Now that's an absolutely stunning film!

Re: The Top 10 New Zealand Features - Not Made By Peter Jackson

An Angel at my Table is certain worth watching, but I feel that a great deal of its positives is due to the fact that it is based upon Janet Frame's biography. It also was blessed with some of the best cast and crew available in New Zealand at the time. Although most agree that the Criterion DVD is the best DVD presentation, the new Blu-ray, technically, beats the DVD. It also is now available in most iTune markets as a streaming rental or download purchase.
