we have decided to disable IMDbs message boards on February 20, 2017.
This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination,
we have concluded that IMDbs message boards are no longer providing a positive,
useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide.
The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made
only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDbs social media accounts
as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDbs editors and one another.
IMDbs Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb)
and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb)
have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans.
IMDb also maintains official accounts on
Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive),
Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/),
YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb),
and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDbs message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users,
we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017
but will leave them open for two additional weeks
so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content theyd like to keep for personal use.
During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017,
IMDb message board users can exchange contact information
with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with
(since once we shut down the IMDb message boards,
users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another).
We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

Actually I think it's the opposite. They don't like seeing their stars like Meryl or Ashley Judd get attacked on here. So rather than let people voice how crazy these people are, they shut down the boards. That way no one can talk about their precious stars.

I enjoyed the message boards here since I joined up over 10 years ago. Had some great discussions, received wonderful advice on new movies and made a few friends along the way. I'm sorry to see it go. To those I've gotten to know over the years I bid you farewell. To those I never had the opportunity to converse with I bid you farewell as well.

I signed it although I don't think a mere 1000 signatures will do much against 10 million supposed users of Twitter and other social media outlets.

Well I'm a simple man with few friends who made this so yeah everyone need to try to help spread the message

Personally don't have any twitter (and just a handful of friends on Facebook) or any of those kind of means to do it.

I upped the maximum vote to 2500 (you can change it as you go along) but there are petitions from them that go well and beyond their maximum signature amount requested so it doesn't stop just because it's reached the goal.

I did also facebook message Col Needham with a link to it, and already got almost 500 signatures so who knows!

I'm willing to bet big bucks that 95% of those 250 mil IP's, are actually people with dynamic IP's(and their mobile devices) lurking around to to check what are other people saying about whatever movie they're about to buy/watch/pirate.

Well that really SUCKS.

Oh noooooooooooooo! I use IMDB every day. It is so helpful. What can we use to find the same info we look up on IMDB???????? This really sucks bigtime!!

Much of the information will still be in the database and accessible through the main site, but these boards will be gone and no way to communicate with other members.

I'm wondering what part of profiles will still be around? For example will people still be able to make lists of movies and actors? Our tracking of what we have watched or want to watch on our watchlists? Will the watch lists still be around? I'm guessing it will just be the "Community" section and its links that will go away.

I understand why they're doing it, but I don't see how this will help the site. I would assume that most of the site visitors also lurk on the discussion boards. Also, two weeks isn't nearly enough for people who have years' worth of comments and PMs on here. They should have given at least a month's notice. Some people go weeks without visiting IMDB, imagine if they decide to log in after February 20 and see that everything they've ever written has disappeared into the ether.

Well, very sad to hear this news.

I really understand that actually in most of boards there is no respect for movies or people, but every time i see a movie i came here to read interesting questions and theories from great users, always ignoring the bad language and avoiding stupid threads.

Even If I see a movie from the 50's, 80's or modern ones. I always came here, rate the movie, and read cool opinions and learning something new with great opinions.


This will not be the same. Could be great to control the boards but I guess it's not possible.

Sad news. Hope one day this boards will be restored.
