FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (2016) vs MARGUERITE (2015)

FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS and MARGUERITE tell the same story with different approaches, but they make the same mistakes: They try to convince the audience that we have to feel bad for their protagonists... despite spending a lot of time telling us to laugh at them. If you make a comedy or dramedy about a singer who doesn't know how bad they are, you can't completely rely on it for humour, because: A) The concept isn't that funny. B) Hearing out-of-tune singing is still as unpleasant (specially when attempting to sing arias) as eating a desert with ice cream and hot fudge. My mouth can't have 2 things of such different temperatures at the same time! It needs stability! Specially when you consider its parents' divorce! Wait, where was I? Right. Unlike its twin movie, F.F.J. doesn't try to delve into deep themes. Also, its dramatic ending is ruined by its comedic epilogue. The only performances in both movies that truly stand out are Catherine Frot's (positively) and Simon Helberg's (negatively).

Any thoughts?

2/10 vs 3/10

Re: FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (2016) vs MARGUERITE (2015)

Having watched both films, I think you are a being a bit harsh in your commentary. The films are based on a true story regarding a talentless passion for singing ( by Florence & Marguerite)amidst an environment of naïve deceptions played out by those who they trusted around them. Such a story had to be mixed with both a comedy of the absurd with the pathos of the ultimate obvious finales. I thought both films were adequately developed with lead roles performed well by two of cinema's great actors. I think that Streep's performance was less nuanced than Frot's interpretation of the role, which probably suited the different markets where both films would predominantly inhabit. I much preferred the Marguerite version , but felt both films deserve credit for delivering such an unusual true story.
