Life Is Sweet : The filming location (family home)

The filming location (family home)

Saw the actual home in Enfield this film was mostly set in today. What a *beep* The front garden is now overrun with rubbish and there is graffiti in the close which leads to the back garden between homes.

Not the nicest of areas. Now would like to find the Regret Rien.

The filming location Regret Rien (now Chaseside Restaurant)

I used to live in Winchmore Hill, which is where the photography studio from 'Secrets and Lies' was set in the Green!!

There is a great article and accompanying pictures of Mike Leigh and his London filming locations from some of his films in an interview with Timeout

Extract from Article:
Were in a cab on the way to Enfield, site of the fictional Regret Rien restaurant in Life Is Sweet (1990), run by the ridiculous Aubrey (Timothy Spall). We drive through Wood Green and past a street where Leigh lived for 30 years.

I moved out three years ago and havent been back, he says, remembering how convenient it was to film up the road, not least as his then-wife Alison Steadman was one of the cast. We reach the Regret Rien; its now an Indian restaurant.

Why always shoot in London? Frankly, we cant afford to go anywhere else, he says. And the city is a great canvas. You can make anything you want here, short of a film about farming.

Re: The filming location Regret Rien (now Chaseside Restaurant)

I knew I recognised it! I live in Bush Hill Park and work in Enfield Chase and I was convinced I recognised the parade the restaurant was in and the furniture shop to the left of it. I was right!

Enfield doesn't have much of a film heritage so it'a nice to find out about this!

Re: The filming location (family home)

I went to school (Bishop Stopfords School) a stones throw from the house and remember filming was going on as we were going to school one morning. We weren't allowed to pass as they were filming an outside scene.
