Ringu girl vs Grudge girl? An utterly stupid premise, but Koji Shiraishi is directing! I'll watch it.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

Well ... I didn't like that one too much but I do think the marriage of metal and K-or-J-Pop is something that might be the future of awesome. If you come across any more of it, please post.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

I don't know, Babymetal makes me cringe for some reason. I just feel embarrassed for them. You girls, put your sweater back on and go to your room, right this minute!

I'm not feelin' it. I think something is definitely lost in translation of speedmetal into Japanese. That said, from my experience, there are certainly girls like that hanging around with metalheads.

I guess I'm more of a "traditional" kpop guy. Even that is basically a kind of soft porn:

Speaking of the future, these kids (they're all under 21, which is sad in a way) are interesting: five are korean, three are japanese, and one from taiwan. You might have heard about the tzuyu scandal...

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

That was awesome! Also totally gross and I'll never watch or listen to it again. At least I made it through the whole thing. Not so with baby metal. Googling now.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

Lol. I have to do like 14 hail marys every time I that, so I will be up to several hundred by the end of the week. You gotta admit, there's nothing like that coming from this country. God bless korea.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

I wasn't impressed with their videos but just watched their performance on Colbert and enjoyed it. Apparently, they started out with a band that just mimicked the music but now use real musicians who play. One of them being the guitar player from Marty Freidman's shred metal band. Freidman's is a curious fellow. Not that he's directly responsible for baby metal, but I do think he's had a hand in bringing Western-style aggression to Japanese progressive metal and pop. Japanese pop has always been more complex than western pop so this marriage is an interesting phenomenon.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

One of their other guitarists is Takayoshi Ohmura. I looked up a few of his YouTube videos and the man has insane guitar skills.

It will be fun to follow this band in the future.

Yeah that's the guy. I saw a couple vids on your site. He's just a kid with mad skills. He didn't play much on the Colbert show.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

I still think that Japanese television advertisements are pretty much the pinnacle of Japanese civilization. Which says a lot about Japan, but I'm not sure what! It highlights, to me, the most Japanesey thing about Japan: that it is the most different highly developed culture in the world (more so than China), probably due to its geographic and linguistic isolation, and the fact that it's so self-sufficient.

I can't get enough of this stuff. A nice, upbeat palette cleanser when you've been watching long, dry, slow, pretentious (ahem), or just bad movies/tv. Here's some more of 'em, enjoy:

This guy was posting some with English subtitles for a while, but I think they're great even without subtitles. It's a whole different side of Japan.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

Not sure if these music tracks, below, are too relevant to what has been posted above but I do like some old(er) J-Pop, like old skool Morning Musume ( Yaguchi Mari yay ! ) and I'm a big fan of those Vocaloid Hatsune Miku dance rhythm games (the new PS4 has 224 songs in it now haha ), but my most favourite are bands like Midori, who - i think - are some kind of avant-garde jazz punk:

Case in point --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyYJE0uikwc

or "shoegaze" rock, like Mass of the Fermenting Dregs ( such a great name! )

A favourite MotFD albums of mine --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4CKmzBf5Cs

Uchu-Jin i love too. Like a Japanese version of Cardiacs :D --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4wbgsFz7vE

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

Love some of that Midori. That girl is nuts, then kinda cute. Also enjoyed some Mass of the Fermenting Dregs. I always look for live stuff to see how they actually play. Don't want no Milli Vanilli nonsense. I wouldn't call them "shoegaze" (I'm a shoegaze snob, as that, and "post-rock" are my genres of choice), but they rock pretty hard.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

Ah yea, I have to concede that i wasn't too sure about calling them shoegaze, i think i may have lumped them into a certain genre without really knowing too much about it in the first place. My bad.

There's a small amount of live MotFD on youtube and they sound pretty good from what i can recall.

And Mariko Gotō ( The Midori front lady ) sure is fabulous. I just found out, via her wiki that, In 2013, she provided vocals and lyrics for the opening song of the anime Flowers of Evil for episodes 4 to 6. The band Uchu-Jin originally wrote and performed the song, but i think for the anime, they got the lead characters' voice actors to perform parts of the song in the opening credits, which is confusing seeing as Mariya Ise was Nakamura's voice in the anime and an actress called Minami Sasaki ( i think there is also a gravure model of the same name, but not the same person ) played her live and was then rotoscoped of course.

I wonder if that is why Mariko Gotō is dressed like Nakamura-san in that live concert maybe ?

If you're interested, Mariko Gotō also is in the film ペタル ダンス (Petaru Dansu)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2301059/

You might already know this of course, but i thought i'd mention it anyway :)

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

Interesting stuff about Mariko Gotō. She's brand new to me so I didn't already know. I love it, and am not usually surprised, when talent floats to the top to collaborate across media types. At first (I read your post too quickly) I thought she did the theme song that appears in every episode. I wrote this about it in my review:

This thing is "Holy Smokes!" good. Great story, great characters, and a closing theme song that gave me goosebumps every time: a couple atonal computer generated voices singing about flowers. The words are spelled out phonetically and it seems to sneak in as part of the story. It's haunting, magnificent work.

I'm not sure I would just listen to Midori much. I love the way Mariko screams, and does rhythmical breathings (reminded me of the FoEvil theme), and plays guitar like she's in the middle of an epileptic seizure, but, honestly, I don't think she sings very well--at least in that concert setting with that band. They all seem like serious musicians with chops, tho.

OMG she's in Petal Dance! I liked that film. I'll have to do a drive-through to spot her. Do you know where she appears?

I immediately went to MotFD's live stuff ... like I said. Heck, I think Radiohead is the best band in the world, but they only made one good album, and all their music videos suck. I gotta see music live, gotta see the bodies. Well ... not all the time, but mostly. Shoegazers and post-rockers aren't that interesting live.

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

"I think Radiohead is the best band in the world"

The longer time goes on, the more that is my absolute stance on them also. Sorry to keep it off topic there. Radiohead are one of a VERY select few that I can't find much, if any, fault. I love a lot of bands' music, but i'm not sure i love anyone's music as much as theirs...

Anyway, back to Midori. I totally see your point regarding the singing ( not screams). Even the music can start to grate after a while, but what one can subject themselves to, it's one hell of a fun ride :) Then again, my other favourite band is the British "pronk" band Cardiacs so my ears are probably not the best to go on, in terms of popular music haha :)

Also, MotFD's front lady is also super lovely to my eyes. There's something about her performing live in bare feet that piques my interest haha. THAT was weird :)

I am so into the Aku No Hana soundtrac so much i even paid through the nose to import all the music albums of that anime haha :) I even love the original version of the end credits ( the anime end credits version is also mind-bendingly good too ) by asa-chang and junray. That version leaves me crumpled in a head, figuratively at least :)

Re: Official YouTube Video Thread - Asian Entertainment Themed

I've been searching desperately to find out who does the music in the Sono film TAG where the girls ditch class and run down the hill into the woods. Can't find out. 😩

The band GLIM SPANKY (love that name) contributes a song somewhere (they are listed under soundtrack here on IMDb). Here's a short montage clip: https://youtu.be/VLwkN3IYph0.

I looked at some of their other stuff. The girl has a squeaky Japanese version of a Janis Joplin rasp. They even do a cover of Move Over.

It sort of depresses me that they market themselves mostly with just the girl and the guitar player (who's fantastic), but when you look at this bluesy rock clip you can see that the rhythm section kicks total butt: https://youtu.be/PFMqsHEzp8w.

A lot of bass players just play guitar with four strings, an octave lower. This guy understands what bass clef reality is all about. Amazing.
