"Train to Busan" is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie of the Year

Scratch that. It is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie EVER!

Scratch that. It is one of the best Zombie movies from anywhere!

Loved it! Hopefully it will get a home video release in North America. If not, I will still buy it from Korea or Hong Kong.

Just saw that it won the Jury and the popular choice awards at Montreal's Fantasia festival (which is where I watched it).

How many Korean zombie movies have there been exactly?

Last Film Seen;
Ip Man 3 (Wilson Yip, 2015) 6.5/10

Re: "Train to Busan" is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie of the Year

Goeshi (1981)

'tis hard to say exactly, though ...

Re: "Train to Busan" is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie of the Year

Two at least now, with the recent, animated Seoul Station . Busan is still the better of the two.

Hi. Just got back from seeing it and yeah, it surely did meet expectations. Although for my part, SK films have set the bar higher that's why when I watched it, it was just like one ordinary day for SK films.

The CGI was awesome it felt so real. It was a good thrill train ride to Busan indeed.

I am glad you liked it. Where did you watch it? At a festival, or has it been released somewhere already?

Re: 'Train to Busan' is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie of the Year

It was released in the Philippines this week. Watched it in the theaters and the cinema was packed with so many group of friends (which made the watching experience probably better). Watched it alone. As usual.

I completely agree, this is the type of movie that is made more enjoyable by watching in a crowded theatre.

Re: 'Train to Busan' is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie of the Year

Not related to the topic but why is it that out of the two posts you replied to me, I never got any notification in my email????? 🐢

I have noticed before that the e-mail notification system is not 100% effective. Every now and then I don't get the e-mails, or get them days after the fact.

What a blast. I think it is the next big thing since The Host. It's an insane train ride (where most of the film takes place) with a lot of brilliant ideas. It's highly entertaining and the action scenes and visual effects are great.
The script is well done, it knows how to build all the tension and gets us attached to the characters. It has also a lot of drama and the ending is very satisfying.
Overall it was very fun to watch and the best zombie film that I've seen in like 10 years since I saw the original Dawn of the Dead.

8/10

China film envy

Re: China film envy

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

"On one hand, I felt that the film was really awesome, but on the other hand, I'm left worried that China's films falling further and further behind South Korean films," Luo Taotao commented on media review site douban.com.

"Over the years I have felt that Chinese films have been improving, but then I watched Train to Busan and I suddenly feel like we are 10 years behind."

I have to agree. China doesn’t make films of the same quality as Korea’s. Here in Montreal Chinese movies are being released in commercial theatres more and more often, but after being disappointed in a few of them, I don’t make a point of watching them anymore – whereas I will jump at the chance of watching any South Korean movie that gets a release here.

Re: China film envy

Yeah I thought it was interesting too, how it loops back to the issue of censorship in China -- but there are so many areas of censorship, not just political things but also "moral" issues. So as I often talk about here, China is really ready for its "1960s" of cultural explosion, but the government is keeping a lid on it. Censorship is causing people's minds to bend inward and cramp up, when they really have the expansive feeling that Korean people are able to express. The Chinese public is getting frustrated; ironically, they don't care about human rights (at the moment, anyway). They just want their horror movies and soft porn, and they want it in Chinese! Furthermore, this is why you see much more interesting cultural things happening, and not coincidentally quite a lot of money, in that weird world of web-streaming karaoke girls:

This is why I watch those bad movies you mention. It's like I'm watching the bowl of still water, looking for the first signs of the coming earthquake.

Re: China film envy

I wish I could rush to China's defense and say that a race to get better at making crappy films (like TtB) isn't that cool of a goal, but China is beyond guilty of entering that race. And their track is much smaller. Damn

Re: "Train to Busan" is the awesomest Korean Zombie Movie of the Year

It's good and thematically and stylistically very much in the World War Z vein. Really tense and quite nail-biting at times and with a fantastic performance from that little girl. My goodness, watching her, she really tore your heart out! But for all that good stuff the film has a third act that felt way overextended. For me the natural climax of the film felt like when our heroes fought their way into that carriage only to be locked in the rear vestibule by their selfish companions and then that old lady, recognising the monstrous behaviour of her fellow survivors, opened the door and everyone got eaten. The film's final scene is very good, very taut and very affecting, but all the railyard stuff leading up to it wasn't needed IMO and the key events there such as Dad's death really should have been rolled into the events on board the train. It is a good film though and it's clearly going to delight an awful lot of zombie fans.
