I think that was kind of the point. Susan was supposed to be an annoying unfriendly thorn in Ross's side. If she'd been too appealing, viewers wouldn't have sympathised with Ross and we wouldn't have had all those amusing little bickers between him and her. It's like saying you found Janice irritating.

Susan: Well, you know, you have to take a course, otherwise they don't let you do it.

But I think it was more the actress than the character, the character was quite uninteresting.

EDIT: Having watched a few more episodes of Friends, I have to say I still really like her. Carol is 10 times more annoying and unlikeable.

But you saw Carol's deep (platonic) love for Ross on a few occasions. But Susan hardly ever was kind to him.

I have seen her recently on various shows, and she is like a completely different person, its so strange- i didn't recognise her at first.

ugh, totally agree. her character was so irritating, but not even the funny irritating way that janice was, she was just awful. i have no problem with the actress, just that character.

susan was rude, dry, and unfriendly to ross. you'd think that as "the other woman" who broke up ross' marriage she'd be at least polite to him, but she was awful. i hated that she expected ben to have her last name as well. it's not the situation where ross abandoned his pregnant wife and then susan came inross was still present and she had no biological ties to the child.

I guess the director got what he wanted out of that character. Good for her.

I thought Susan was awesome. Her wry sense of humor made me laugh. Though Ross couldn't appreciate her for many reasons, he was also not seeing her at her best.

It's hard for me to imagine a person who could tolerate Ross' many and varied antics with equanimity. After all, he's not exactly nice to her, either and he pulled a lot of weird stunts. She expressed her exasperation with a bit of humor, which doesn't seem so bad to me.

I bet she's a blast when she's among friends. We do see glimpses of Susan at her best: how much she loves Carol and Ben, her amusement when she practically dares Ross into something, knowing he can't resist the bait. Her wedding dance with Ross where she clearly sees the good in him and is truly appreciative.

I also think they probably wanted the people not to like her.
But that didn't work for me. ;) In spite of the unlikeable characteristics they gave her I liked her. Maybe it's not because of her character, but the actress.
That's the reason I came here: I wanted to ask if someone met Jessica Hecht, because she seems to be a nice person to me.

She really makes it seem like she hates men. Otherwise why the hell wouldnt she be nicer to a guy whose life she kinda ruined? I can't imagine being mean to someone I hurt, whether accident or not.

Yes, shrill voice annoying. Her lines were good thoughso cheers to the writers for that part.
