In mu opinion, it's not that they want to kill but that they need to. Because the virus makes them crave blood, they have a bloodlust to satiate and see they're killings as necessary. The virus enhances their rage and aggression. So to answer you're question it's most attributed to the virus.

I agree, it seems to be the virus. I guess we didn't see much of him before he was sick, but I think it might affect the kids more strongly since kids in general are more self-centered and don't think about consequences. The main kid (forget his name) wasn't the only one on board with killings although it seemed like a couple of the girls were regretful. The virus probably way heightens regular emotions/impulses.
