American Horror Story : Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

I'm currently on the Hotel season. I couldn't decide who was my favorite character between John Lowe and Nick Prior/Liz Taylor. I just barely got to episode 5, the annoying-as-hell and preachy propaganda episode. If people are transphobic, then they're going to be transphobic whether you force an after-school-special about acceptance down the audience's throat. I watch AHS for horror and creepiness, not to have SJW bullsh*t shoved down my throat.

Like I said, I already really liked Nick/Liz, the character is interesting, has good development, and is a weirdly compassionate person in their own b*tchy and snarky way. I'm just really annoyed that AHS essentially took an episode to pass the microphone to self-righteous social justice warriors who pat themselves on the back for shoehorning their own personal views into a TV show. Why in the hell do the overwhelming majority of TV shows have to double as a platform for leftists to force their politics down everyone's throats? Why in the loving *beep* does Hollywood feel the need to pander like that? Entertainment should be entertainment and politics should be politics. Regardless of whatever asinine views Hollywood has, it's actually possible (and preferable) to keep the two things separate.

And to all the a**holes who are going to jump on this post and accuse me of transphobia, go *beep* yourself with a rusty screwdriver. I have nothing against transgender people. I do, however, take great issue with Hollywood trying to "convert" people by dedicating entire episodes of a TV show to something that is 100% irrelevant to the theme, plot, and subject matter of the story.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Change the channel unless someone has you at gun point don't watch.

This show has been gay friendly since season 1

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

All good storytelling means something, as does good character development...

It also happens to be integral to the theme of transitions, The Countess mentions the vampire transition metaphor almost quite explicitly

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Why shouldn't Hollywood or entertainment reflect on politics? Any type of artistic medium has allusions to culture or politics. Hell even shows like South Park and Family Guy do that. Liz's storyline is very relevant to the overall themes of Hotel, one of which is transformation.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

That's a great story. Especially this

go *beep* yourself with a rusty screwdriver.

I like this as well

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Congratulations, you apparently just realized you're not existing in a vacuum and are part of this wonderfully evolving thing called society that, true to the word preceding "thing", changes. And art, since the dawn of time, has always reflected this. Your next task in acquainting yourself with being a human on the planet Earth is to look at past artworks such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, literature, and old films to see how, shockingly, the subjects they tackled were new and relevant to THEIR time period. I admit, when I first saw a movie featuring 1920s flappers, I was shocked to learn they were a rather risque set of women at the time--I assumed they were around in Biblical times, drinking and dancing it up next to Moses. And whenever I read a story by Kate Chopin that focused on feminine sexual repression in the 1800s, I was floored to realize that was relevant to her era and she didn't just choose those topics out of a hat. It's almost like 20 years from now, new artworks will be made that focus on other stuff than we're concerned with now. It's positively amazing to think about, and who knew? I have never experienced change reflected in media before. I was just born, after all. Weren't you?

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Great post👏 Unfortunately the OP's eyes will glaze over as he starts up his rant again that hollywood is trying to convert him.

LOL. I must remember to pack my bags so I can ditch my partner and run off with Liz Taylor to live happily ever after.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

lol yes you do

ever heard of the expression "thou protesteh too much"

fits you to a tea

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

It wasn't irrelevant to the plot, it was developing Liz's character. And also, teaching people to be open-minded and treating people as people and not labeling them isn't "leftist propaganda." It's just a good lesson. I'm very conservative, and I'm not going to accuse you of transphobia, but I think you took this the wrong way.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Thanks for using the term SJW - it's always handy shorthand for someone not worth discussing much with.

If you find socially progressive themes in entertainment you might find yourself limited for options, artists tend to be of the less socially conservative or reactionary breed. There's always Ted Nugent or maybe some old episodes of Charles in Charge?

I am curious as to what Hollywood is "converting" people into? If you have nothing against trans people, then why is a back story about a trans person any worse than a back story about any character? Why is it even an issue? Most of the characters had an episode dedicated to their backstory.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

The conspiracy theorist in the other thread thinks hollywood is trying to convert us all into Jews, Satanists and Pedophiles. He hasnt mentioned LGBT...yet.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Hannibal converted me into a gourmet foodie.

Re: Pandering and Obnoxious Propaganda

Uhm...tv and film have carried all kinds of messages, some political, for...well...since the beginning of film. A bit late to start throwing a tantrum about it now.
