American Horror Story : Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

For the heroes, I based this on likability:
1. Shelby: real-life (she was very sympathetic, Sarah's pretty good as well, though, but I liked her better as Audrey)
2. Matt: reenacted (seemed like he didn't have any personality at all and didn't like that he actually wanted to bone that witch)
3. Lee: real-life (there was something very acting-y about Basset's performance IMO)
4. Flora: reenacted (man, the real Flora turned out to be really annoying, ungrateful, and stupid)

For the villains, I based this on scariness.
1. Butcher: real-life for sure (Kathy was great, but I couldn't shake off her image, it was smart for them to choose an unknown for her)
2. Nurses: real-life (the reenacted version was way too clean, though I found the part where they killed the lady in Matt's dream in the reenactment to be the scariest thing they had done)
3. Chengs: reenacted (surprisingly, I mean, they didn't look that much different, but when one of them showed up for the first time to pick Flora up from Shelby's grasp in the stairs was really effective)
4. Mama Polk: reenacted (the real-life version was too cartooney compared to her, I didn't include the rest of the Polks because neither the real-life or the reenacted versions left much impact for me)
5. Pig Man: real-life (the part when he appeared in the backseat of Diana's car was really awesome)

I guess that's it. Did I leave anybody out?

What about the Wood Witch?

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

(man, the real Flora turned out to be really annoying, ungrateful, and stupid)

Real Flora watched her mother cave her father's head in with a rock so she's annoying, ungrateful and stupid? And why should she be grateful anyway? Because her addict mother got away with murder? Ummm ookay.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Whoa, those three words I chose have nothing to do with her decision of leaving her mother, mate, but with her decision of getting back to the house to be with Priscilla, and I just want to add that it's the writers' fault they didn't develop her character enough so that I, and the rest of the audience probably, could understand her decision. She was going to take away her life (why I called her ungrateful) just so she could spend an enternity with an undead (who couldn't be any deader whether she was protecting her or not (why I called her stupid, and from stupidity, came the annoying part))?

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Mate, if you couldnt understand her character that's not the writers' fault - it's yours - but I wouldnt call you annoying, ungrateful and stupid. That would just be rude.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Nah, I didn't call the writers annoying, ungrateful, and stupid, I called Flora that, and I think it's okay to have an opinion about a fictional character. I suppose you think her character is developed properly to have such mindset of killing herself, then? Well, good for you!

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

She did not kill herself. You must have missed that part. Put your gadgets down next time you watch an episode.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Hahahaha I said she killed herself? Okay, then.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

I completely agree about Flora. I can see why she would not want to go back with her mom after watching her kill her dad, but the whole staying with Priscilla thing was stupid. She looked too damn old for that *beep* Like, why would you kill yourself to protect a ghost? Like, she's already survived the Butcher for 100s of years and now all of a sudden she needs protection? Like, how would Flora even protect her any more than she can. You think she would be better because she's been at it longer? She's already dead so what's the worse that can happen? I just felt like they should have had someone younger for that plot to work. At that age, I would have had some sense not to be talking to ghosts and trying to kill myself...

"You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling."

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Yeah exactly. It was more like a "these characters need to be back at the house...now let's make up their motivations" instead of "wait there's no reason these characters would go back." Maybe if Flora was suicidal because she hated her mom and lost her beloved father and Priscilla made her happy...maybe, that would work. Thinking she could protect a 500 year old ghost is just too insane to really buy.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

It would have been far more believable if Flora wanted to go back to roanoake to be with her DAD who is stuck there. And that was the ultimate twist, Lee killed him to keep custody, but if Flora dies she'd be stuck with the dad forever there. And ideally the other dead cast members help that to not happen and save the little girl but will take Lee's death as penance. But none of them ever showed up. So stupid.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Damn that would have been better.

That's a good twist, ErosCorps!

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

I figured she bashed his head in and it knocked him out so he was technically still in his body, but when she burned him that's how he died ultimately and was seen burned and confused (head bash). I thought it would have been a nice nod to "smoldering children" from Murder House if the burned up parent was now vengeful and wanting to hurt other people and keep their daughter close.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Most people are looking at only the tail end of Flora's situation...her mom killing her dad. But Lee was an addict and addicts put their drug of choice above anything, even their children. So it's not fair to call Flora "a brat" when you imagine the neglect and/or abuse she must have gone through before what was shown to us.

Less than forget. But more than begun.

Re: Real-Life vs. Reenacted Version

Shelby- Tough one for me because Sarah Paulson nailed the character and Lily Rabe played the part well during confessionals but I'm going to pick real life because of her performance in Return To Roanoke and I like how she had a bit of a mental/crazy side since the house had a great affect on her.

Matt- Another one where I enjoyed both but I have to say the reenactment. The performance was much stronger and he seemes more of the loving husband than the real one. I liked Andre Holland's portrayal but he seemed bored half of the time and I also think he had less of a personality.

Lee- Its a (narrow) tie for me. Both versions were strong, independent and showed how much they cared about "their"'daughter and that "they" would sacrifice for her. And even though both performances are different and beyond compare, they were great in their own unique way and its hard to choose which is better. Its great seeing Angela Bassett play an average every day person and a actual character instead of being type casted sassy woman looking for revenge and her performance during the time Flora disappears is brilliant. Adina Porter's performance could get slow at times but it got better each time (especially when she breaks the fourth wall during one of the confessionals) and later on in the season you'll realise that both versions are a bit similar.

The Butcher- Although I should pick real life because she was quite, mysterious and more rough and its what makes the villain terrifying, I'm going to pick the reenactment. She had more of a character and was far more interesting, I also found her more scary and threatning. I think also that she is a Kathy Bates orinated character and in my opinion the role belonged to her. Agnes was a great little tribute to the character as well.

Mama Polk: The reenactment. She was more creepy and someone you wouldn't want to spend a day with or go on their bad side. Most of all its Frances Conroy, what more can I say. The real life version wasn't at all scary she seemes more like one of those crazy old cat lady hags and someone you would rather laugh at then be scared of if she abducted you.

Flora- The reeactment by a mile, her performance and her chracter arc was a lot better. At first she was curious of the house and enjoyed playing with Priscilla then after learning about what goes on, she gets scared and never wants to go back. I understand the real life character with her Mum (thats how its spelt and pronounced in Australia which is where I live) being an addict and killing her father and all but she seemed to forget how dangerous the house is and just went back there to live in to protect Priscilla from The Butcher and that was pretty silly. I don't mean to nitpick since shes a child actor and shes still young but real life Flora's performance was just boring and bland.

Witch Of The Woods- Yet another close one but I'm going to go with the reenactment, she had more of the charm. I love the take on the real life potrayal, it was really realistic and I think its what a witch would actually look like if they actually existed but she was really hissy and had an animal like behaviour. Unless he was under her spell again, why would Matt want to have sex with that thing?, on top of everything she is supposed to be the original Supreme (rumour has it) with her type how is that even possible?.
