American Horror Story : If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

What would the season be based on? Use real examples of local horror stories that could make a season of the show. And I mean an actual story that could be sustained, not like "There's a haunted convenience store in my town" because unless the season was set exclusively in the store, wellyou get it.

There are tons of local legends and haunts in small (or big) towns across America.

Mine would have to be about this haunted subdivision. It's like something straight out of Poltergeist. There's an entire neighborhood where the residents complain about paranormal phenomena. They even did a radio show about it once for Halloween.

I once found out a friend of mine had lived in it for a while and asked if he had any stories to tell. He said nothing happened to his family, but they lived next door to a house that was always on the market and the story always ended the same way. He said a couple would move in and initially be fine, but then they'd start having loud fights and the woman would become disheveled-looking and the man intense. Then they'd break up or get divorced and move out. I thought "What's so strange about that? Moving is stressful" but he said the fights were always about the exact same thing with every couple. And he meant specifically, like they'd always have the exact same argument and even use some of the same words as the previous couple and the story always ended the same way (they'd break up or divorce and move). And apparently this happened with four different couples over the course of two years. He said it was like something in the house was influencing them and it was uncanny.

Once I was driving through the neighborhood with a friend who was from out of town and he suddenly said he was getting a bad vibe from the area and wanted me to get out of the subdivision. He had no idea about the local stories.

Word from some locals is that the homes were built on Indian burial ground, but I've had no confirmation of this.

Once when someone I knew was looking to buy a home, they were warned not to go past a certain line in town because that's where the trouble starts.

Anyway, your turn.

They would do it on John Wayne Gacy

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

Back during prohibition the police and government in my city were so corrupt they told all the gangsters of the 20's and 30's that they could stay here if they didn't commit any crimes within the city limits, John Dillinger even roamed the area for a while.

A lot of the speakeasies were built into the caves down by the river, one of which still operates as a bar/restaurant to this day.

One time three gangsters who were playing cards in the back room wound up massacred by several men who entered wearing police uniforms, guess you can still see where some of the bullets struck.

Since then, people have reported spotting people dressed in 1920's attire about the property including employees, patrons and guests at weddings.

That's the tale and the scariest thing is our government is still corrupt.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

So you're from St. Paul, MN?

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

Waverly Hills. One of the most well known haunts in the country and THE most well known haunted place in the city.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waverly_Hills_Sanatorium

it would be extremely similar to asylum except instead of the mentally ill you'd have a bunch of people dying of tuberculosis.

Cause I can't post without a body

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

They did that already. ;)

I'm from New Orleans

Marie LeVeau, Delphine LeLaurie, and The Axe Man are all horror stories (true ones) from New Orleans history.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

OMG! Have you been to LaLaurie's house before?

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

Making it AMERICAN horror story is a stupid decision from the get-go IMO. Why limit it to just America, possibly one of the least scariest places in the world? (okay that might be a stretch)

In my country Singapore, we have this 'hungry ghost month' in chinese culture where supposedly, the gates of hell open and vengeful spirits or hungry ghosts wander among the living, seeking revenge and justice before the gates of hell are closed again for another year. People would burn incest papers and leave food out in the open for their deceased relatives to 'consume'. In chinese opera shows, they also leave the front row empty for the ghosts so that they can enjoy it too. It'd be a pretty neat theme for a horror show. In fact they already have a horror film about it called The Maid, which I think is pretty interesting:

We also have an abandoned hospital infamous for a lot of hauntings. It was used as a prison and torture chamber by the Japanese during WW2.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

It would be very easy for my town (Athens, Ohio). They could set the whole season there. It is known as one of the most haunted places in the country and even appeared on that show "Scariest Places on Earth" (which was narrated by Zelda Rubinstein and hosted by Linda Blair). We have The Ridges which was a lunatic asylum opened in 1874. Patients were treated very cruelly and often lobotomized, given electroshock treatment, and bathed in ice water. It closed in 1993 and nowadays the buildings are used as offices, storage facilities, classrooms, etc. for Ohio University.

The most famous case was the disappearance of a patient named Margaret Schilling who disappeared in 1978. Rumor has it she was playing hide and seek with the nurses. Anyways, over a month later she was found in a closed off ward of the hospital. She was naked and her clothes were in a pile folded next to her. Her body left a white, human shaped stain on the floor which cannot be wiped off to this day. There is also a cemetery near the old Asylum where patients were buried. It's said that some vandals arranged gravestones in the shape of a circle and many witches go to the center of this circle

There are also the five oldest cemeteries in Athens, Ohio. When connected on the map they are supposed to form the shape of a pentagram. All five of these cemeteries are said to be haunted and in one of them there is an angel statue which has been said to shed tears. At the center of this pentagram is Wilson Hall, a dormitory where students live. There is a room in the dormitory (room 426) where no students are allowed to live. Supposedly a female student died there while trying to perform astral projection. Afterwards students who stayed in the room heard strange sounds, footsteps, and saw objects move by themselves. It got so bad the room had to be closed off.

Then there is a place called Mount Nebo which is said to be the highest point in Athens. In the 1800s there was a movement of spirituality spreading across the area. A man named Jonathan Koons, who was a devout Atheist, moved into the area and tried to discredit any spiritual ideas. He became a believer after a seance with a young girl in which she asked questions (some telepathically) and received answers from spirits. The Koons family soon became strong believers and regularly contacted with the spirits themselves, being told to create a "spirit room." The spirits told them certain possessions they missed in life and the Koons family would go buy them. Soon people came from all over the country to see what the Koons family could do. The house was later burned down and the family relocated. All that remains of the place is a triangular patch of grass.

In addition to all these hauntings, every year the college students do a HUGE Halloween block party which people come from all over the country to visit. All you hear around October is "block party this, block party that." So with all this put together it seems like it would be very easy to do a whole season centered around Athens, Ohio.

A slave was caught with his masters daughter. Filled with rage, the man drug the slave to Juju Road in Bossier Parish, Louisiana and hung him.
Those unlucky enough to find themselves on JuJu Road at night encounter the deceased slave. Many can see the shadow of his body in the moonlight swinging from that same tree. Others have encountered the slave freeing himself from the branch and wandering the road. Hooded figures with torches can also be seen approaching the tree.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

For me it would be a season based on Urban Legendsmy area of Ohio is filled with them.

For instance, outside of town hereon an old country road is a place where you park and flash your lights and you'll see a light appear out of nowhere and it comes towards you. The story is basically a guy got killed on his motorcycle on this road and this "light" is his haunting the road.

Or

There's another road south of hereyou drive down to a dead end. You park and as your windows of your vehicle steam up you're supposed to see the word "Amy" written in the condensation. This of course is due to the fact that a girl named Amy was brutally murdered in this area.

Orback in 1977, there's a rural area where Big Foot was repeatedly sitedin the same stretch of land.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

I have two from different towns I've lived in.

The first was Cumberland, RI. I forget the exact details but a couple had a bunch of mentally disabled foster children that they abused and kept locked up in cages or something. It was right next door to the high school. I could see them making a good story out of that one.

And then when I lived in Blackstone, MA there was a house where a woman had her baby die but didn't tell anyone. The house was in such bad shape when she was evicted that they had to tear it down.
I found this link:

Wow, I never realized what a dark area I live in. Although these towns are in different states they're less than five minutes apart.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

I never heard about the Diamond Hill ghost but I loved driving down Tower Hill Road at night when I was younger.

These days it feels like there's more traffic on that road and it's a lot more common to get someone behind or in front of you the whole way which takes away all the fun.
And I think they'd added or are adding some more houses which makes it even less scary.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

Many years ago before my office building was built, there used to be a bar on the property. One night 2 brothers were drinking and got into a knock down drag-out fight. It spilt out into the parking lot and one brother got ahold of a tire iron and killed his brother.

I've never seen anything, but several other employees have seen a man walking around in our building before he disappears into thin air.

That doesn't scare mebut last night someone left the roll-up door open that connects the office to the warehouse and this morning there was a little snake laying in the hallway next to the breakroom. Now I'm scared to death to walk downstairs!!!

He already used Dahmer, who's from my city (technically a township/suburb of my city).
He could go back to that or use the Craiglist Killer and Rolling Acres Mall.

Rolling Acres Mall has enough murders to make a whole season.

I used to go there a lot when it was open (when I was a teen), until the gangs took over.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

I'm from Canada, and my city doesn't really have anything of significance about it. However, very close to where I live is an old sanatorium called Fort San. It was opened to treat tuberculosis, and was turned into a summer camp years later. Hundreds of people died there, and every person I know that's gone there has experienced something paranormal. My band teacher told me that he took a group of students there a few years ago, and he went in to the bathroom to find that the shower was on. So he opened the curtain, turned off the shower, and then washed his hands in the sink. When he looked up, he saw in the reflection of the mirror, the shower curtain slowly close again. I've never been there, and I never want to go.

This is kinda like Asylum though (old TB treatment ward).

American Horror Story Season 6: Donald Trump

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

I grew up in San Antonio, Texas about 2.5 hours from Mexico. Two urban legends that terrified me were La Chuza, a birdlike beast with a witch's head and La Llorona, the weeping woman who is searching for her children. Another is the ghost tracks where the ghosts of children will push cars who stop on the train tracks. I have seen several movies that reference these legends. One other that has been around as long as I can remember is the Donkey Lady. To my knowledge this is something that only people near the downtown area have heard about. I grew up not far in a historic district in a creepy century old two story home with one of the only known basements, something rare in Texas. At one, I started to hear stories that this Donkey Lady lived in my creepy old house. lol. I believe this rumor came to be due to an old grumpy, senile neighbor that lived behind us in a trailer on the other side of the alley. It was a rite of passage for kids to go down that alley at night and not get caught by the "Donkey Lady" aka Mr. Bird, the neighbor. I would love to see a decent adaptation of this.

There are tons of local legends and haunts in small (or big) towns across America.

The Crying Angel (Millington, TN, just north of Memphis)
http://memphismagazine.com/ask-vance/the-crying-angel/

Nearly 40 years ago, when in high school, my pals and I made an after-midnight trip to see it A couple of the girls categorically refused to get out of the car.

Also in Millington, TN:
The Haunted Smokestacks
https://southernparanormaloftn.wordpress.com/smoke-stacks-investigation-report/

Went there as well, as a teen. I don't buy into the "paranormal" blarney in the blog link above it was (and still is, AFAIK) just a place for kids to party. But definitely creepy as hell, especially at night and when blitzed.

Send her to the snakes!

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

kctx85: what town do you live in? Because we have that same exact thing in a neighborhood in our town. Freak deaths, suicides, murders, divorces, crazy stuff. I'm in Ohio.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

There is a place in my town called Hana House which has deep roots with the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. The owners (maybe the city) capitalize on this already by offering tours and special "haunted" tours during the fall. There is also an off-site haunted house attraction with corn mazes and things like that. I feel like an entire season could be based around the Civil War connections to this house that is supposedly haunted by runaway slaves and slave owners.

There is also a house in my hometown (not where I currently live) that teens used to drive out to because it was supposedly haunted and weird things would happen if you were on the property. I spent a night there with friends and some weird stuff definitely happened. Strange lights outside, noises, shadows, the whole nine yards.

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

I live in Southern NJ, so it would be pretty easy to pickthe Jersey Devil. Supposedly, an 18th century woman who already had 12 children got pregnant and declared that her 13th child would be a devil. Flash forward to her giving birth to a part goat, part bat creature. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

Setting: very rich suburb of Oklahoma.

There is a "college" located on the outskirts. No one knows exactly what goes on in there (outsiders are not welcome) but there is a huge watch tower. Kids try to get in, saying that they will somehow video tape the going ons, but can't ever get past the first gate.

Second scenario.

Setting: poorer suburb of Oklahoma.

Drive down a long road, and you hit a hidden trail. You've heard rumors about a witch's house being burned down with her inside. There have been stories of car batteries going dead, cellphones suddenly draining. You don't believe them. Surely, it is just a myth. You set out with your friends to disprove it. You get there, with your voice recorder in your hand, and walk down the dark path lined with trees. You come across a section of land. The only evidence of a house previously being there is a round stone fireplace that has started to break down and fall apart. You laugh with your friends, thinking you were stupid for ever believing the stories. You get out your phone to take a picture, but it is dead. Whatever. You call it a night and walk back to your car. You try to start it, but it won't turn on. You ask your friend for her phone, but it is dead as well. Starting to panic a little, you turn on the voice recorder. The battery is somehow still working. You hear a distant/muffled voice saying, "come". You think your friends messed with you but, in the pitch black night, you're easily frightened. Now you are losing your bravery, and go out to the road to flag down someone to jump your car.

Etc, etc, car gets jumped and you go home to talk about what happened. That's what happened with me, but I could completely see a twisty turnu thing happening with the jumper guy.

Sorry this is so long!

Re: If they had to pick a horror story from YOUR town…

There used to be this guy named Bob. He was kind of a drifter I guess, well not really a drifter because he was always in town. He rode his bicycle everywhere and everyone knew him as Bicycle Bob. He was a nice, friendly guy and we'd always wave to him and he'd smile back. This was still the late 80's, and he wasn't really a 'stranger' since he rode around town every day.

About 10 years ago he had picked up some random work for this elderly man in town. The guy didn't have any family, and he lived all alone. So it took a few days to find his body. Bob murdered him with an axe. Now we refer to him as Axe Murderer Bob.

There's also a few dirt roads that are said to be haunted. Strange noises, lights in the middle of nowhere, that kind of thing.

Not an American Horror Story, but this.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2096423/Mary-Ann-CottonBritains-FIRST-serial-killer-poisoned-21-people-including-mother.html

We used to sing an old rhyme about her when we were kids which went 'Mary Ann Cotton, she's dead an rotten, she lies in her grave with her fingers up her bottom'. Yeah, I know, very mature.

Say what now?
