Gerard Butler : So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Wow, it seems rather surreal that the IMDb message boards will be closing in a few weeks.

I started out here at Gerry's board, but have been active in several other boards as well, mostly Politics and Game of Thrones. I won't miss the Politics board (yikes), but I'm going to definitely miss the Game of Thrones board when the new season rolls around. I'm going to have to find a new place to discuss Thrones!

To all the Gerry fans (and critics, LOL) still hanging around here, I will miss you! It's been quiet here for a long time now, but this place still has a lot of memories attached to it.

Take Care, everyone!!

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

SiriusGrande

will miss you too

be good and see ya in line for any of Butler's films upcoming

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Haven't posted much over the past few years but I must say I will miss the Message Board here at IMDb. I guess social media has claimed another victim with now facebook, twitter and instagram reigning supreme.

Best wishes to all. And Mr. Butler keep making movies!

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

I guess it's not surprising that the forums are being closed. Most people communicate by social media these days, though I'm not one of them, because I value my privacy too much. The fan sites are dead for the same reason.

I've always enjoyed this place and the people in it. We had some great discussions and fun times here. At one point, this forum was bursting with intelligent, witty, and hilarious posters.

It would be fun if lurkers came out for some parting words before the end. I hope Gerard Butler has achieved the level of success, fortune, and personal happiness that he wanted, or will achieve it eventually.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

I am also going to really miss the IMDB boards. I loved reading and posting here every day. I've been haunting these Gerry boards since 2006 and have enjoyed getting to know the various posters here and feel somehow bereft that it will all end soon. Lately I have been reading the Politics board and think it is very interesting what with all that is happening in Trump's first 100 days. I have also been avidly reading at the 'Black Sails' board, especially as this is the final season. That's going to really hurt, but not as much as what they're doing to my darling Captain Flint, I just love him sooo much LOL. Okay, I know it's a bit sad that I love a murderous pirate, but IMO that Toby Stephens bloke is beyond gorgeous and sexy, followed closely by Ray Stevenson, simply fabulous as the fierce and imposing 'Blackbeard'. Toby's real life brother Chris Larkin has also just joined the cast as a horribly sadistic naval officer and I so hope they have a scene together. I kind of only remember Chris from 'Master and Commander'.

I see where they are already taking up a petition to keep these message boards, whether or not that will count. Surely IMDB will lose by doing this? Does anyone think perhaps Mr Trump could have anything to do with it? Supposedly some angst between him and the owner of Amazon or something? He does seem hyper sensitive to negative comments anywhere in public forums and hasn't there been mention that he wants to change libel laws or something? It seems he is certainly making his presence felt trying to live up to his election promises. BTW who else is tired of celebrities mouthing off? It's a bit off putting IMO and I wish they would stick to performing. Also, what's up with Ashley Judd and her tirade? and Madonna threatening to bomb the White House for God's sake? It can't be good for their careers can it? I also read where some Trump supporter got their head bashed in with a shovel at the Berkley fiasco, but didn't hear if he lived or died. I've never really followed American politics, but I am kind of thinking that in a 'democracy' the people chose to vote for this President didn't they? Why then all this Democrat backlash? especially the rioting and violence? Although I did kind of feel sorry for some of those poor foreign families held up at airports. One of the posters on another site said that she was terrified when protesters threw cardboard placards at her just because she was allowed through. I guess you do have to wonder what's up next. I so hope it all settles down soon.

Anyway, I still can't believe this board will soon be gone, I used to especially enjoy being an observer during the heated political debates with the super intelligent posters on the Gerry board. Those posts were amongst the best during the halcyon days of this very busy and super entertaining board. Where did Evil and Robin go? I have missed them and so many others. I will miss also all of you great and interesting people who have hung in here to the very end discussing GB and his movies. I'm really not into fansites or facebook and twitter and don't post at JJ, although now I guess I'll still read there and hopefully I'll see some of you somewhere else in the future.

Sadly, I guess for now it's hugs and cheers everyone and thank you so much for the memories. It's sure been a fun ride while it lasted. Also, lots of good luck to Gerry B in his life and future career. I used to think and I guess I still do that he was one of the most handsome and sexiest of actors to ever grace a movie screen whilst presenting to the world a kind of flawed and likeable rascal in real life. Here is my tribute (LOL won't you all miss me and my videos?)

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Robyn,

Your posts are always thought provoking. While I usually avoid political discussions, I have a few comments regarding yours.

Does anyone think perhaps Mr Trump could have anything to do with it?

I don't think so, although he is attempting to censor the press and media. They have been ordered to "sit down and shut up" by his racist advisor Bannon. If he could control this and every other site, he would.

It seems he is certainly making his presence felt trying to live up to his election promises.

He is acting more like a dictator than a president. Numerous executive orders (decried by Republicans when issued by Obama) are overkill.

BTW who else is tired of celebrities mouthing off? It's a bit off putting IMO and I wish they would stick to performing. Also, what's up with Ashley Judd and her tirade? and Madonna threatening to bomb the White House for God's sake

It depends on the celebrity. I've never been a Madonna fan or know much about Ashley Judd. But when someone with the gravitas of Meryl Streep speaks up, I am interested.

I also read where some Trump supporter got their head bashed in with a shovel at the Berkley fiasco, but didn't hear if he lived or died.

If that happened, it is wrong, but Trump encouraged violence against dissenters in his crowds, promising to support them if arrested, and there were many incidents at his rallies.

I've never really followed American politics, but I am kind of thinking that in a 'democracy' the people chose to vote for this President didn't they? Why then all this Democrat backlash? especially the rioting and violence?

Actually, Hilary Clinton won the popular vote by over 3 million votes, but we have an antiquated electoral college system, which allows the winner of states to override the democratic winner.

Aren't you a little offended by the way Trump treated your Prime Minister a few days ago? He argued, disrespected, and even hung up on another country's leader. Australia has been one of our most loyal allies forever. Next he will be banning Australians from entering the U.S.

We are a very divided nation and Trump is doing nothing to unite us. It is all about corporations, white men, and the richest cabinet in American history. So much for the little guy who put their faith in him.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Honestly, who knows where it will all end Barberry. It seems many countries worldwide aren't happy about Trump and although I didn't vote for our PM Malcolm Turnbull I agree it must be awful for him at the moment. I just read this: something about Trump's next EO target could be the LGBT by giving wider control to religious organisations. Wonder if that includes Scientology? With all of the negative revelations from former members lately, I think some were kind of hoping this 'philosophy' was on the way out. How come the 'thetan' rubbish they teach is a religion anyway?

Here is what I read about the LGBT

http://www.msn.com/en-au/news/world/trump%e2%80%99s-next-executive-order-could-be-a-horrifying-step-backwards-for-society/ar-AAmzFKP?li=AAgfYrC&ocid=iehp

Robyn, there are two sides to all those stories.

Hi CBL, I've missed you. Not sure exactly what you mean, but I guess there are two sides to any story.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Robyn,

will miss chatting with you too

sending hugs and love to each of you who shared what you knew about Gerry with me

because I came late to liking Butler, in my cinematic heart he'll always be the Stranger in Dear Frankie and Johnny Donne in The Jury and yes, we will always have Sparta!

he just signed to do Snow Ponies- an action thriller sounds interesting.

Liam Neeson signed for Hard Powder another snow based film and Renner's Wind River is set against the snowy mountains of Wyoming- actually Utah where it was film-

geez what's with all the snow?? haha!!

Does anyone think perhaps Mr Trump could have anything to do with it? Supposedly some angst between him and the owner of Amazon or something? He does seem hyper sensitive to negative comments anywhere in public forums and hasn't there been mention that he wants to change libel laws or
yes that had crossed my mind too. Telling the media to shut up seems very unpresidential

take care of yourself, be good, stay safe and see ya soon (at the cinema watching Butler making us happy indeed)

Where did Evil and Robin go?

I'm not sure about Evil. I miss her too.
Robin/RRuin was here for a long time and only recently went MIA. Last time I chatted with her she was hard at work writing/editing/submitting.

I always hope that when folks go missing from here, that means they're too busy with great things in their lives to come around.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

I think Evil prefers Facebook.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Thanks Annie, it's also been so great having you here and keeping us informed with new Gerry info and with your special insight into behind the scenes.

Hey Smack, it's really good to see you here again. Yes, these boards sure were a riot back in the day, some of those trolls were absolutely brilliant and so very funny. I read over at JJ and sometmes a few of the intelligent, funny posters there do seem a bit familiar and I wonder if they are actually ex pats from this board.

LOLOL! I am so blind. I read Annie's post as Gerry starting a new movie called 'SHOW' Ponies and thought yaay Gretchen would finally have a Gerry movie to get excited about! I actually love watching movies filmed in the snow. The Revenant and The Grey were extra special for me.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Robyn51

The Revenant and The Grey were extra special for me.

and for me too. The Grey will live in my cinematic heart and I'll remember The Revenant when I'm an old lady!!!!!!!!!!!

You7ec are most welcome. I had a good time with so many of you.

if you want to exchange email addresses PM me while we still can!

I read over at JJ when I can but a few posters remind me of high school! And those terrible cliques. Mean Girls never cease.

I posted a couple of times but one of the women felt I was dissing Butler- I try to be fair regarding him. I know so little about him and quite frankly don't care who he is scr*****!!!!

He does strike me as perhaps having loved someone once, gave her all of himself and she either did not reciprocate or he failed to tell her how he felt, convincing himself he's only *beep* How else to explain those silly embarassing PDA's? I saw a few pictures last Jan-Febish at work while reading something about Renner!

One of my favorite books So Long See You Tomorrow says it all so long see you tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Checking in, if anyone remembers meI was AKA RandomBrunette.

When I see a TV show or movie that is new to me, I always check out the IMDb boards to read comments. I will miss that. I hang out on Previously.TV for their boards - particularly for Game of Thrones. The forums are heavily moderated but still a lot of fun.

I too miss the good old days when the Gerry boards were on fire.

Years ago, Evil and I met each other at a couple of POTO events. We are Facebook friends. She is doing well! Corvus AKA little_red_corvette is another FB buddy - she is still creative and funny and cool.

I'm also FB friends with a couple of other Gerry board postersbut I can't recall their board names, because it has been so long since they posted here.

Robyn, Sirius, barberryand many othersI will miss you.

End of an era!

Random

Ambivalent? Well, yes and no.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

I remember you well Random and thanks for the info about Evil and others. It truly is the end of an era and I'm feeling really sad about it. It has been more than 10 years for me here and it will be like losing old friends. I also like to check IMDB for TV and movie info and to check the comments when I'm curious about any new show. I'm hoping all of the petitions will have some impact with the PTB.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Robyn, are you on Facebook?

Like Random, I have several friends on Facebook whom I met via online forums. Most are from the Gerry days, but I think I have an Adam Lambert friend there (I had almost forgotten that phaseand how I met her!), and one dates WAY back to my first foray into message boards, a Fox board for that old reality show, Paradise Hotel.

After awhile, our online buddies become just as dear of friends to us as those from real life. A few of mine I've also met in real life. I often forget that our friendships started out online drooling over some actor!

If anyone wants to be friends on Facebook, definitely send me a PM!

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

I don't use or understand Facebook all that much Gretchen, except to follow a few links we've had here. I mostly intereact with family there, but not very often. It would be nice though to have an alternative place where we could all still talk about Gerry's career. I just read that there is the 'Black Sails' Facebook page that BS fans could possibly check out as a message board alternative. Some are saying that there is too much gushing there, but I'm kind of thinking that could suit me fine because you know how I just love to gush! LOL. Do you ever go to the 'GOT' Facebook page?

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!
b68

No, I've never messed with the GOT Facebook page. I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family both near and far. Luckily, some of them are also Thrones fans, so at least we can post to each other about the episodes as they come out.

Ah, well. I'm really going to miss "gushing" too. I no longer gushed about Gerry, but there seems to always be a new handsome face every now and then that I want to come gush about on IMDb. I'm going to miss that.

I keep looking at possible new forums/message boards for movies, TV shows, and actors, and none of them fit the bill right now. I guess when you get so used to a particular format and style of message board, it's hard to switch.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

This is a really good article about IMDB shutting down the message boards and why it is misguided

https://news.boxofficebuz.com/article/why-imdb-s-message-board-shut-down-is-misguided

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

That IS a really good article, Robyn. Thanks for sharing.

It's funny that just today I've watched two movies that I've not seen before (50 Shades and Magic Mikewe see what kind of mood I'M in today, LOL!), and my instinct is to go to those films' IMDb boards to see what is being said and discuss them.

It's going to really suck that I can't count on one easy-to-access site to do that with any movie, TV show, or actor in the future.

Damnit.

I know IMDb has issues with trolls, especially on the Politics board where it's just outrageous. GoT's board isn't much better, especially in the off-season. But that's not the case with every board.

I wish they'd close down the general topic boards like Politics, etc. and leave the boards for movies, TV Shows, actors and actresses. I guess th5b4e thinking is that the political discussions would just eek out into the other boards if they didn't have their own board. We know there were heavy political discussions on this very board years ago, and I've certainly seen political threads pop on on GoT's board over the years.

And I get the issue. I really do. Spend any time at the Politics board and you can see how toxic that place is. It's NOT a true reflection of our real life society. In real life, people with differing political views can discuss, debate, and disagree on things without it blowing out of proportion. But onlineespecially an anonymous, unmoderated message board, it just gets amplified X 100 be each side ruthlessly trolling and attacking the other side.

And, hell. We now have a President of the United States who trolls on social media himself, exacerbating the divide between the "left" and "right" even more.

It's too bad, it really is. People are so anxious to troll, bully, and fight with each other.

*sigh*

Magic Mike was really good. (LOL)

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Glad you liked the article Gretchen. I agree IMDB should get rid of just the boards that cause political dissent and over the top downright bullying and nastiness.

I refuse to watch any of the 50 Shades movies simply based on the fact that IMO the books were so very badly written they were insulting to anyone's intelligence who had ever read a good book in their life. IMO E L James would not know the meaning of provocative, titillating or 'erotic' if it jumped up and bit her. Just plain boring and repititive. Didn't she start with Twilight fan fiction or something? it really shows IMO and I won't be a part of promoting her. I hear Dakota Johnson was surprisingly good in the movies though. I will also not watch anything with IMO worst actor in the universe Channing Tatum (along with Keanu Reeves) if I can help it, so I guess Magic Mike is out for me too LOL.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Ha! Wow. Um. Well, I had never really paid Channing Tatum much mind, except in that Nicholas Sparks movie, Dear John. I thought he was okay in that, but I don't really like Nicholas Sparks movies or books (except The Notebook). I was pleasantly surprised by him in Magic Mike. He was witty and sharp, and I thought he did a great job acting. I've put off watching it for years because I thought it was just some flesh fest of naked men. People kept telling me it was actually a good movie, and they were right. I have more respect for Channing now. He's really good in it. Very natural and funny.

I agree about Keanu Reeves. He's like a robot.

I read the first 50 Shades. It's brainless smut for sure, and I didn't feel the need to go on in the series, but I hear they actually improve and the story gets deeper. I've started reading the Crossfire series by Sylvia Day (wellI'm on the third book, and I only started a week or so ago). You're right that 50 Shades started as Twilight fanfic. I'm actually intrigued by that as someone who has written fanfic myself. There is some outstanding fanfiction out there, some of it better than the stuff I see that's been published. But what's funny is, the Crossfire series is obviously knock-offs of 50 Shades. It's almost the same story, minus the BDSM stuff, and the heroine isn't as innocent as Ana. I think Crossfire is even more erotic though, plus it has a deeper plot and more developed characters right from the get-go. But, Gideon Cross and Christian Grey could almost be interchangeable.

For kicks, I tried watching the original Twilight movie on Netflix this weekend tooyou know, to revisit the "source material" of 50 Shades/Crossfire. God. Talk about a terrible movie. I read all of those books years ago. A student of mine let me borrow hers. As she'd finish reading one, she'd pass it along to me. Again, not great literature, but fun, easy reads. I can't remember if I've seen any of the other movies. I think so. Not really impressed with any of them.

Dakota really was good in 50 Shades. She's a good actress, and she's the only reason I could tolerate the movie. The guy playing Christian just didn't do anything for me though. He doesn't have the jaw-dropping good looks and sex appeal that I think is needed for that role. He looks too vanilla.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

I see some old familiar faces here! Yes, I miss the glory days here, too. Alas, Gerry and I went our separate ways long ago. And one of my favourite actors, John Hurt, just died.

I wish the old gang could come and hang out a bit before "boardageddon". I think I saw a TLoops somewhere on the board as I remember a trickster/troll, or who knows!! IB and Mobi and Medusa, good times.

Me too, Pais. The more the merrier. But I've gotten used to the idea that the boards are ending here. It is probably time, especially for this actor, who seems stuck in a rut.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Hi Random,

Good to hear from you. Yes, it is the end of an era. Like Robyn, I am sad. Hope some more former and current posters will add their comments before we go poof.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Hello, my bitches! I just stopped by to say au revoir, as I understand this board, (as well as all of the others), is going to disappear soon. What a lot of laughs we had here! Who can forget when we married Vonnie off to Gerald on Wikipedia. I laughed so hard I cried that day. Well, all things must come to an end. (Even my participation in the Republican Party - haha!)

Paisy, I got your message, and return the best regards!

I spend my time on FB these days, and try to ignore politics as much as possible. I am currently on a, thus far unsuccessful, campaign to get my husband to move back to Kansas City, now that we are done raising Lauren.

I forgot about Gerry a long time ago. Has he been in any movies? Did he ever get married? To a woman?

Best wishes and happiness to all of you. I'm friends with some of you on FB. You are welcome to look me up.

Why does a girl have to be so silly to catch a husband?

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Hi Evil! Glad you checked in. I can't believe you've gone apolitical, but I understand why.

Yes, we've had some great times here. It's been pretty quiet for awhile though.

Gerry is an action star now. He has had an on and off again girlfriend/companion for a few years, but nothing official.

Take care.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Hey, Evil! Glad to see your bold red font one more time!

Kansas City, eh? I have family there!

Glad you're doing well, and I hear ya about ignoring the political hullabaloo.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Nice to see you here again Evil and so glad all is well with you. Gerry is currently finding some success as an over the top action star and patriot who tortures and annihilates terrorists in a franchise centered around the White House and the President of the USA. So far there are the movies 'Olympus Has Fallen' (kind of like Die Hard' in the White House) followed up by 'London Has Fallen' and the next is 'Angel has Fallen' about Air Force One. Gerry stars as Special Agent Mike Banning and his action sidekick is Aaron Eckhart as the President. The topline cast also includes Morgan Freeman and both movies have done pretty well at the worldwide box office. POTO seems very far away these days. Who would have thought it eh?

I guess it really isn't like you Evil to not be so interested in politics anymore. I've been interested and following it all for the first time ever and wonder how long Mr Trump can go on like this with all of the backlash to everything he does? Perhaps people would prefer the seemingly very conservative Mike Pence? He does seem like such a nice man though and he and his wife did seem so relaxed and comfortable and in sync with each other dancing at the Inaugural Ball, as opposed to the Trumps who seemed somehow stiff and disconnected IMO. Maybe Melania is petrified for what Donald is going to tactlessly blurt out next LOL. At least she thanked the overseas soldiers for fighting for the US whilst Donald was just rabbiting on. I think she is quite lovely and she reminded me a little of Sophia Loren at the Inauguration, although I personally much preferred Ivanka's gorgeous ball gown and wasn't a fan of the gown Melania wore. I kind of thought it looked like a white flour sack tied in the middle LOL and thought it made her look pregnant when she turned side on.

Lol

Most of the fans here were middle aged older housewifes from usa lol

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Wow, they are shutting down the boards?? I rarely post anymore but pop in occasionally just to see if there is anything entertaining. This place has been dead for a while. Back when I started posting here around 2008/09 I think this place was a laugh riot. Oh well . . . best to you all.

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Wow, logged on tonight to get an explanation on a plot point of a terrible movie I watched and saw that the boards are closing! Rather disappointing!

I joined in 2005 and remember the days where we were posting 20/30 times a day. Silliness and fun all the time.

Ah well, times will change.

It's been fun! Take care, Everyone.

BTW, for you Dakota Johnson lovers, check out "A Bigger Splash." She's really great in that movie. I saw it because of Matthias Schoenaerts - what a talent!

Au revoir!

Bootsie

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

What a shame! Often when I'm watching a show or movie, I'll pop into the Imdb boards to read some spoiler or just see what people are saying about it. I'll miss doing that.
You do have to wade through the garbage/fights/negativity, just like on any other forum or comment section. I guess Imdb felt there was simply too much of it here. Right now there is SO much vitriol, rudeness and half-truths on the internet. It's really toxic. It's a shame if that's the reason for the Imdb shut-down. But if it is, I can understand their decision.

In any case, this place was better than a fan site because you weren't limited to just gushing. Better than Facebook or Twitter too because you could post looooong dissertations if you wanted. It was a fun board, very active for a while. Even GFW was a hoot.
I haven't posted in a long while but still checked occasionally to see if Butler is up to anything worth noting. I see currently he is not. I'll miss the silliness of it.

Best of luck to you all!

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Wow I can't believe these message boards are going to end. I just popped in to check on Legion and saw the announcement. Everything changes that's something we can always count on. For those who don't remember me I also used to be known as KatieJ.

I will miss popping in here and reading all your witty hilarious posts about good old Gerry. And I mean old. My last words on that subject are that it's such a shame that he started out so promising and ended up so mediocre.

What I will miss most about these message boards is that people really communicated thoughts fully. Social media is so limiting.

Well238 it was so much fun while it lasted. I would love to see some of you around other places but I don't know your real names and you don't know mine so that won't work out too well.

RRuin, remember when I was an ultra-conservative and you used to tell me off? You know already that you affected me greatly in re-examining my beliefs, you'll be really happy to know that I have become a flaming liberal. And I like myself a hell of a lot more when I look in the mirror.

Lastly, the last few times I popped in here I didn't see Evil around. It's great to5b4 see you back for a visit and it's amazing that Trump seems to have pushed even you away from the Republican party? The orange monster is wreaking chaos everywhere. Hope we can all survive till he's gone. That's one good thing about change. Presidents come and presidents go. Thank heavens!

Bye all!

Re: So long, Gerard Butler IMDb Message Board!

Katie! So glad you popped in for the farewell. You and I both migrated to the Adam Lambert fandom from Gerry, if I recall correctly. I don't follow Adam anymore, but that was a fun time too! Glad I got to see him in concert!

I hope all is well with you. I know plenty of people who used to be staunch conservative Republicans who have been driven away thanks to Trump. If nothing else, maybe he'll manage to break down this "us vs. them, red vs. blue, left vs. right" mentality in this country. It's so destructive, and the ONLY people who benefit from it are the ones at the top of the food chain who are pitting us all against each other in an effort to keep themselves in power. It HAS to stop. We need to wake up and put these jackasses to work FOR US, not the other way around.

Anyway! Hope you're well! Good to see you!
