The Crow : Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

This movie was on the TV the other day and I remember my angsty, emo kid older brother watching it a lot so for nostalgia cringe curiosity I had it playing in the background.

So my discussion board question is

do people actually enjoy this movie for a legitimate purpose or is it like because it's so *beep* that it's funny? Because at no point whatsoever did I find this movie actually entertaining.

We have a lanky, whiney guy in make-up chasing down cliche gangsters and spouting out 8th grade level edgy one liners. I just...what the *beep* is this movie lol

I struggle to think of any other film which has as good badguys as The Crow

Probably RoboCop, but this is still a great movie.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

OP rated "I, Frankenstein" a 9, amongst a slew of other terrible flicks, which makes their opinion on films completely invalid.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

I went and checked that, my god, even for a supposedly cheesy, fun movie, they didn't even managed to do that, it was almost too hard to listen to the dialogue, I felt sorry for all the actors, they all seemed to know it was really *beep*

j_walking1516 rated Falling Down 3, so there you go.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Before anyone starts the "you haven't rated any movies, this is your first post, why are you bothering on this movie" type of posts...this is a new account as I've forgotten my old logins LOL

I watched this movie back when I was 17 originally, not long after it came out actually. Thought the movie was good, good atmosphere, nice set pieces, good action sequences. A friend earlier today brought up how the movie doesn't work when you're an adult watching it and I basically called BS and decided to rewatch it.

The one liners and the rest of the dialogue is weak at best, the action scenes are so comical it may have well been WWE wrestling, the set pieces come across as plastic and out of place. The storyline itself does have some merits in concept, I won't begrudge that but all in all this just isn't a very good movie.

Maybe I'm now too old to understand this but I'm clearly missing something from when I first saw this almost 20 years ago. Is the huge draw to this movie because Brandon was tragically killed on set?

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

I have to say, I had the opposite experience to yours.

I too saw this movie when it first came out -- saw it in movie theaters upon release, went to see it six times, as back then there wasn't a VHS release for ages and if you like something, you'd have a long wait until home video.

Bought it as soon as it came out on home video. After a couple of years, like many movies one owns, didn't re-watch it again for years.

I recently discovered I'd lost my copy of it during a huge move. Sad about that, I ordered the Blu-ray.

I sat down to watch it not really expecting anything but mild nostalgia.

I also wasn't expecting Laurence of Arabia or Citizen Kane --- but I did get a film that, in my opinion, still actually holds up really well.

I find it just as atmospheric, suspenseful, cool and interesting as I did twenty years ago. The gang are hilarious, the messages of love and hope are still quite beautiful, the performances are nicely done, and even the effects, which were rudimentary back in that day, are perfectly okay and don't come across half as clunky as I'd feared they would look in this day and age of very competent CGI on everything.

And Brandon?

No, it's not all about his being tragically killed on-set.

His sheer charisma shines through any thought of that. Just watching the guy's huge personality, very decent acting chops, and masterful fight choreography (he and Jeff Imada designed all the fight scenes on the entire film) take me completely out of any dwelling on his death. Ignore the morbid thoughts and watch the guy -- you just wind up enjoying the performance, not thinking the morbid thoughts.

At least, maybe not you, but that's how it worked for me. I still really enjoy this film and it has great qualities, as does Brandon's excellent performance.

I do know what it's like to re-watch a film you loved years ago and discover it falls flat for you. But this time, with this film, I was glad to find this wasn't one of those for me.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Everything you said/typed. Applies to me also. I saw the movie when it first came out and loved it. Not the greatest movie ever made, but yet, in spite of the violence, I found the message very touching. Twenty years later, I still love the dialogue, the look and feel of it, the score and soundtrack and the message.

"Light Up, Light up, as if you had a choice"

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Sounds like you indeed feel the same way I do. I still really love this movie for its own qualities, yep, not just nostalgia.

And while it's not among the greatest ever made, it's by far nowhere near the the category of the worst or dumbest movies around, as the OP claims. It's a fine movie and is one of the most interesting of its genre.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

great synopsis for a plethora of fans.thanks for taking the time to type it out.
i don't know, i was born in '79, saw this in the theater, bought the vhs, dvds & br's. perfect movie. still holds up.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

It really does still hold up really well.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

His sheer charisma shines through any thought of that.

What charisma? Didn't notice any.

I watched the movie a few days ago for the very first time, and yes: it is dumb. Felt like an episode of a cheesy 90's horror show. The only good thing was Bai Ling, who was very hot in this movie.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

If you see no charisma in someone like Brandon Lee, your charisma meter needs maintenance dude.

And throwing around "dumb movie" when things like Transformers exists...well. reaching for trollish insults. It's not more "dumb" than any other action/fantasy movie with all the same elements, and there are thousands out there against which this film holds up just fine. Troll. Enough said.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Wow, really good and accurate post! Brandon's performance alone made me a huge fan of this film despite the brilliant cinematography, soundtrack, dialogue, editing and acting from the rest of the cast. It's one of those movies that gets better with age, a rarity in the land of Hollyweird today!

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Thanks! I totally agree with you that all aspects of this film are terrific -- soundtrack, cinematography, the cast's performances. And Brandon is amazing in it. It completely holds up today.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Another idiot on IMDB that thinks everyone shares his opinion. How original.

Remember the magic words: "Please", "Thank you" and "Step off bitch!"

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Gotta agree.....it is insulting to those of us who were fortunate enough to live a time when Hollyweird could actually produce something of quality.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

A lot of the...goth community from what i've heard dig this movie. I finally got myself to put it on, and between the weirdly dramatic music and the crappy dialogue/acting, I could not take this movie seriously. I really think the only appeal is that Brandon Lee first appears shirtless and wears all black, and makeup. That is it. And being a girl it takes more than "eye candy" and jumping across rooftops to excite me in a film unfortunately. The villains are painful to watch, they are that stupid. I had to shut off the movie a half hour into it, so perhaps my review is a little bias, but this movie seems terribly overrated.

Why did the main character rise from the grave shirtless? How come it rushes to the action so soon? I don't think I heard the protagonist say a word in the first half hour of the movie. It doesn't even show him being buried yet, didn't he die from falling out a window and hitting the pavement? If the movie didn't feel so dumb, maybe I would've watched long enough to find out.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Hmm, brand new account and this is only your second of two negative posts. Troll much?

To humor you for a moment...it's clear you didn't pay all that much attention even to the 30 minutes you deigned to give this movie.

We don't see him buried because the prologue shows his death, then a caption on the screen tells us that the events we are about to see happen one year later. On the anniversary of Draven's death. Not that this particularly matters to move the plot forward but you seemed to be concerned about it and missed the caption saying "One year later."

If you're so unwilling to even pay attention to a movie in its beginning scenes, I'm not surprised you get so little out of it that you give up, having invested so little of your focus in the first place.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

-- Brandon Lee first appears shirtless --
We see alot more of him in other films, fans of Brandon's prior to this film saw that.

-- "eye candy" --
You must have better eyesight than I do, most of the film he is in full makeup and the rest is pretty dark, so you can't really see what he really looks like.

Sorry you got so little out of this film, your missing out on a classic. If all you saw in this film was Brandon shirtless, then I can't help but question how you missed all the rest, since it was all you seem concerned with I would have figured you would have watched the rest just to see him more. Wasn't he pretty enough, oh wait you could not see him so well, or did it just rock your world a bit too much? Don't worry it did that for a lot of people.
Then those who actually took the time to really watch the film, well we get a lot more out of it than eye candy

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Actually he was not shirtless when he rose from the grave.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

yep... this movie is nothing more than a fantasy revenge movie for beaten down lovesick emos...

really, it sucks. i liked it when i was a lovesick 11-14 year old, but with each rewatch every 4 years or so i disliked it more and more. by the time i was 22, i found it purely cheesy & ridiculous. now at 26, i cannot watch it. i got it out of my collection and was going to watch it the other day cause i'm sick and on a horrible movie kick but i just couldn't make myself do it (i just watched prometheus, and dracula 2000, for examples). the second movie however, is pretty goddamned great.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

Well if you feel so badly of it, donate it to charity so someone else can enjoy it.
You have kept it all those years and can't stand it. Wow how stupid a thing is that to do.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

all the length of time that i've owned it shows is how little i care about it. i have tons of stuff from my childhood just sitting around that i haven't touched for at least a decade. if you care about my copy, ill mail it to you and you can do whatever you want with it. i dont have time or the desire to go to some rickety ass "charity" full of creepy weirdos and drop it off. i have no problem putting it in my mailbox for USPS to mail it to you though.

also, your grammar is horrible. i really hope english isn't your first language cause damn. you are the exact kind of lovesick teenager i keep talking about lol.

Re: Still to this day, one of the dumbest movies ever made

You might wish to take a look at your capitalization errors for just a wee second, and your lack of being able to carry on an adult conversation without having to cuss.

Or your just here to catch a ripe one for arguing. Or you are just the exact kind of person who can't see a good film when it smacks them in the face.

Don't bother with this one, he sounds like the low info, low IQ, zero attention span type of moviegoer, who is the target audience of crappy Michael Bay films. If you're a fan of big budgeted Hollywood movies where there's sh*t blowing up every 5 minutes, this is NOT the film for you! Now, add an "L" to your username douche bag.
