The Crow : I don't get it.

I don't get it.

Maybe it's because I just watched it for the first time almost 20 years after it was released and it hasn't aged well. Maybe I just have terrible taste in movies (but then again, it's my taste, so for me it can't be "bad"). I don't know.

What I do know, is I don't understand the love this movie gets. It's mediocre at best. 5/10.

It wasn't that interesting, it wasn't exciting, not captivating, I didn't really feel or care for any of the characters, the acting was mediocre, and it seemed to drag on endlessly. It also seemed to be pretty cheesy and poorly filmed throughout.

In all honesty, the most fascinating part about this film was learning of Brandon's on-set death as I read a bit about it after the fact(I'm not a big celebrity kind of guy, I don't really pay attention to what happens in their lives and hadn't heard about it until now).

What makes it so great? Why do people seem to like this as much as they do? I can't believe its IMDB rating.

Re: I don't get it.

For me this film is one of my all time favourite films

I like the story of the film - boy and girl gets killed, boy comes back to life to get vengence on the killers. This makes u want to watch the film because you want to see if he gets his vengence and whether he can be reunited with his lost love.

I also like the unusual ways the killers are killed by Eric as it makes the film unique

I guess it depends on your personal film preference as everyone likes different things

Re: I don't get it.

I love the dark, gothic tone to it and the romantic themes. The dialogue is the best part of the movie, almost all the lines are memorable and witty. The soundtrack is awesome and the score is beautiful. Action scenes were exciting and suspenseful. The acting was believable to me and Brandon gave all he got and gave a great performance. It's also very nostalgic to me because I loved this movie as a kid but I loved it even more as I got older.
Obviously everyone has different tastes in movies so if it wasn't for you, it just wasn't for you

Real life sucks losers dry, you want to f--k with the eagles you have to learn to fly...

Re: I don't get it.

Its one of those if you love it you love it if you don't then you just don't.
I like the feel and the revenge in it.

Re: I don't get it.

I saw this movie when I was 15 and now that I am um 35 and saw it again. I think it's a wonderful movie and timeless for the age it is. Brandon Lee did a wonderful job it, it didn't drag on for me. I think it's better then the *beep* movies they got out now. You don't have to like it or maybe you don't understand it excatly OP and that's your right and decsion but never knock something until you've seen it or try. Besides it's not only a beauitful love story about two people in love but it shows that if two people are really meant to be together. Then real love is forever and also he advenege's him and his fiancee's death.

Re: I don't get it.

You must not get Rage Against The Machine either. Greatest score/soundtrack ever. Yeah being BL's last film does add a bit of aura to it but was badass film regardless.

Re: I don't get it.

To be honest, it's not a "great" film.

It's OK and worth watching...but not a "great" piece of cinema.

The story and characters are interesting, but massively watered down over it's source material.
I always suggest to people that didn't find the film all that great to read the original comic books/graphic novel. As I have often found that after reading the source material, people do find it "better" than the film.

Yes Brandon's death certainly was party responsible for the film's interest via some people. And yes, some people will vehemently defend the film due to the death of Brandon.
However, one must separate the man and behind the scenes actions from what is shown on film.
What is shown on film is not that great whether Brandon lived or not.

Still as I say, give the book(s) a read instead and see how you feel then.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

Re: I don't get it.

I can understand where you come from. I personaly love this film. When i first saw when it came out it clicked with me, I do not know why just did. But then again i know people who love the t.v. show Sienfeld I have watched a few episodes and do not get the love for this show it is the dumbest thing ever and I am surprised it lasted 1 year let alone 9. So it is just what clicks with you. I have no reason why I love this film just do.

Re: I don't get it.

Say what?

Re: I don't get it.

I agree somewhat. And this is coming from someone who loved this movie back in his college days. But I think a large part of the appeal for me back then was the gothic art direction, music and atmosphere. Nowadays I'm out of my goth 'phase' and I have little desire to watch this movie again.

Re: I don't get it.

I think this is one of those movies that either clicks with you or doesn't. For me, it clicked. The gothic, dark romantic tone, Eric Draven as a whole, the gloomy city, the tragic story of lost love and violence, the music, etc. Something about it hit me and I was sucked in. It's been my favorite movie for over 10 years.

Is it perfect? No. But I kind of like that about it. I've seen technically better movies, but they don't hit me on an emotional level. This just does and it's hard to explain why. I think we all have a movie like that.

Re: I don't get it.

What is the obsesssion on this site for the rating? IMDb's scores are crap.
It's a total popularity contest. I rate this one 10. I don't care what you rate it. It's sad the rating is so low, but that's IMDb

This isn't Wall Street-this is Hell. We have a little something called integrity-Crowley

Re: I don't get it.

I watch this movie every year on Devil's Night, it's a tradition (just finished it a couple of hours ago). It's one of a small collection of movies I've seen more than just a few times.

Perhaps it's helped by the atmosphere of Halloween every year for me but I have no trouble getting into this movie every time. It has very few scenes I consider filler scenes, they all seem to advance the story. The atmosphere and set is surreal but it works for this film.

It feels like we're being told a story, for this reason there should be an element of suspension of disbelief. The extra-dark, cold, rainy and exaggerated sets and atmosphere fit for this story. The performances were strong and the dialog is limited and borderline cheesy but many lines are clever or memorable in spite of this. Much like the poetry he quotes in the movie, it can be mistaken for being out place or forced but it's all part of this fantasy story we're being told.

I don't look at every movie with the same set of standards, I consider carefully what I think they were trying to achieve and if I can get immersed in it or not. For example, some plot holes can be just brutal depending on the type of movie it is but some can be wholly forgiven if they are in the name of making an enjoyable movie (let's be honest, EVERY movie has plot holes). You could argue this entire story is a construct in Sarah's mind to help her cope with the loss of her friends (and neglect from her mother), some emo revenge fantasy she cooked up in a dream... it still works.

The movie seems very deliberate but there are some nuances to appreciate.

I understand why some people dislike it, but I think it's a great film for what it tries to be.

Re: I don't get it.

A movie doesn't age, it's immortalized on film forever. When will some of you people learn it's you that's changed and not the movie? The movie is just as great today as it was then, if you can't see it that way then I feel bad for you.

Re: I don't get it.

Compared to all the trash that passes for movies in this decade, The Crow is a masterpiece.
