Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III : bent's revenge on charles?

bent's revenge on charles?

I just watched all three series back to back, part 3 is just plain awlful! very badly put together, but the thing is why would bent get revenged on charles? I did'nt see anything in the first two movies that something happened between the two?

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

It is in the books.

"Fear will push you into haste, and haste will push you into the grave"

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

Charles must of rubbed Bent the wrong way or Bent was so malicious that he wanted to go after George's and Orry's entire family. Which leads me to ask did Bent get expelled completely from West Point or just demoted?

Also this revenagefulness of Bent was waaay over the top. I know that Bent was an evil guy, but damn they made it seem like he didn't have a life. I couldn't believe how obsessive he was over George and Orry? I mean didn't he serve in the Mexican War (sending Orry/George and their troops into the crossfires which caused a permanent injury to Orry's leg)? So I didn't understand how Bent's military career was completely ruined as he so claimed over and over again.

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

I think in the books, Bent got kicked out of West Point and Main and Hazard were to blame. But he went to an influential Senator who he believed was his biological father, and got reinstated. It's been so long since I read the books that I don't remember all that happened. A lot of things happened between Bent vs. Main and Hazard, and he blamed his ruined life on them.

It's interesting to note that in the books, Bent was not the slim handsome character as portrayed by Philip Casnoff, but was fat, slovenly, and tried to seduce Charles Main! Ew.

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

Yeah, it also confuses me as to why Bent, in Book 3, blamed George and Orry for the end of his military career when, in fact, George and Orry (in Book 1) retired from the military ahead of Bent. In Book 1, Bent, wearing a military uniform, attended James Huntoon's speech in New Orleans (they later went to a brothel). At that time, George and Orry were already running their cotton mill. They were just reinstated when the Civil War erupted.

And going back to the question: Indeed, Bent, in Books 1 and 2, never knew Charles Main from Adam.

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

Also, and this is going by the tv series, Bent was obviously blown to bits! If you see the sheer size of the explosion there is no way Bent could have survived!
Bit poor really

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

They left out the interplay between Charles and Bent that was in the books, but they did have Bent mention at some point in H&H that Charles screwed him over in Texas when they were both in the Army.

The reason Bent considers that Orry and George deprived him of a glorious military career is not just that they helped get him kicked out of West Point, but that when his dad got him back in the army's good graces he was not promoted to top spot and considered the New Young Bonaparte. He says a couple of times that this instructors compared him to Napoleon but he never got the rank he deserved, and he attributes that to Orry and George and later, Charles. Also, Bent felt that Jefferson Davis had not recognized his genius, but had instead listened to that "bastard Main."

Another nice little tidbit from the books is that when Gus is rescued, Bent was getting ready to molest the boy. Eww again. Bent was one twisted dude. Philip Casnoff was far too pretty to play Bent, but he did get his character pretty dead on.

Re: bent's revenge on charles?

In the novels, Charles is under Bent's command in Texas. Bent realizes that Charles is Orry's relative and makes life hell for him. At one point Charles wrote to Orry. Knowing that his commanding officer was from West Point, he asks Orry if he knew Elkanah Bent. Orry immediately writes back warning him about Bent and how dangerous he is. Charles has already figured that out. I can't recall exactly what happened, but Bent was removed from command I think Charles did something to him that got him in serious trouble.
