Street Fighter II: V : Some annoyances with the show

Some annoyances with the show

1. Bison's suit is blue instead of red.
2. Ken has red hair
3. Ryu doesn't have his famous headband
4. Ryu is wearing a bracelet a girl gave him. It looks stupid and serves no purpose.
5. Sagat has BOTH eyes
6. Vega's 17 and he's a matador?!
7. Ryu and Ken obtain alot of injuries in this series (some could be even fatal) and yet they seem to be okay in the very next episode.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I like Ken's hair better red.
I like Ryu without the headband and with the bracelet, it adds character and originality. All asian martial arts guys wore headbands back then.
I didn't really mind Bison's change of uniform colour, though I did notice it.
Sagat..yeah his look is completely changed, but I don't care... still a great character.
The whole age thing is WAY too exagerated. Ken and Ryu are 16 but they're ripped, have tons of skill and just kick everybody's ass. Vega is the most famous matador in spain and he's 17... yeah that was stupid.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

As I remember, Vega was 18 not 17.

Ken, Ryu were 17.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

It made sense for Sagat to have both eyes since this is suppose to take place before SF I.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I didn't like the way Ryu takes like 5 minutes to charge up his fireball every time he does it on the show. I know they're trying to get across the idea that it's an ancient technique few living people have seen, and it takes a lot of effort to do it, and he doesn't go firing them off four or five every 10 seconds like in the games, but still - he takes a LONG time to do it. Maybe if the first time took that long and he kept getting faster at it.

Plus one of the episodes, the first 2 acts are a recap of the previous episodes.

Another thing I don't like is how Chun-Li doesn't wear her SF2 outfit until she's brainwashed by Bison.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

he does get faster at doing it.

he's still very new and it doesn't look like he practices it that often in the show. woulda been better tho in the end if he shot an air version even though hes not 'evil' or atleast fired one without having to do the 'sfii:v only' special ki gathering motion

the last battle could have been more epic.. in ways it seemed like the vega vs ken bloody battle was more dramatic

Re: Some annoyances with the show

He might be fast in the game but his attacks are weaker too. It would be impractical tfor him to charge up a big, powerful attack in the game because his enemy would just socked him in the face before he had a chance to pull it off. Hence the weaker, quicker attacks.

And they're not "fireballs"! They're kikouha (QiGong blasts).

Re: Some annoyances with the show

1. That word that Ken says every time he throws a punch, jumps, kicks, opens a door, meets someone new, etc..

2. The fact that they are so young is annoying. Ken, Ryu, Chun Li and Vega should be in their mid to late 20's. Vega maybe even older then that. Notice how they didn't even bother mentioning any one else age - except Fei-Long.

3. The pace of the series was too slow. So many scenes kept dragging. Like Dorai & Cammy, Guile and Charlie searching the HQ, felt like DBZ all over again.

4. The fact that Ken and Ryu got to do most of the fighting early on despite the fact that we are introduced to several other interesting characters like Chun-Li, Fei Long, Dhalsim, etc..

Re: Some annoyances with the show

-no Sonic Boom from Guile

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I don't see what the problem is with them being younger. I thought it was cool, i wanted to see them doing more teenage stuff actually.

Concerning some of the other stuff in the original post:
isn't Vega supposed to be a famous matador? that's part of his backstory, right?
yeah, ken's hair is kinda red, but he's not a natural blonde in the first place(3/4 japanese) so maybe he was using a different dye back then.
ryu doesn't get his red headband until SF Alpha, but this place place before that, hence no headband. i like that he didn't have it. that made him look totally different, which is cool.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I don't like that in one of the episodes I saw, Ryu goes to "work out" in a certain outfit that included some pants and a cutoff shirt with some Japanese characters on it and then when it shows him doing the hadou-ken, he's in his classic martial arts outfit again. This was obviously the animators cutting corners, but it was less acceptable here than with say the bull charging scenes all being the same (Vega episode).

Also, in the one I'm watching on TV, I hate how at the end of every episode the guy's like "Gonna burn some muscle." I do laugh every time because it's so corny.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I don't see the problem with Vega being a famous matador with 17 years old. Thats normal, anyone in Spain for example knows "El Juli", that is one of the most famous matadores in the history of bullfighting and he started very young, and was famous since the beginning. I mean, bullfighting and being young is perfectly possible. "El Juli" was so young that the money he won couldnt be administrate by himself and was his father the one who did it. I will translate a text about him I found:

[JULIÁN LÓPEZ ESCOBAR quiere ser el torero del año. Con sólo 16 años, su intención es lidiar esta temporada más de 100 corridas y matar unos 225 toros por toda España. Su especialidad, inventar y rescatar quites, levanta pasiones. Éstos son sus mejores lances.]

JULIÁN LÓPEZ ESCOBAR (El Juli) wants to be the bullfighter of the year. With only 16 years old, his intention this year is to do more than 100 bullfighings and kill about 225 bulls all over Spain. His best, invent and rescue "quites", wake up passions. These are his bests.

This text is an old new, I think now he must be 18-19 years old.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I am sort of disappointed with the ending. They could have made the last episode a 2-parter. Instead of just showing Ken & Ryu going their separate ways, they could have made them go back and see Fei Long, and have Chun Li go back to her father Dorai who barely stays alive, or they could have went back and visited Dhalsim in India, or gone back to Hong Kong, or show Ken returning home to his father, Guile burying his best friend Nash (well the fortress blew up, maybe not).

Also I don't like the repeated scenes as new episodes begin, and the length of the opening credits, it's way too long, even on fast forward. And they did way to much of that "huh?" like when Ken or Ryu or pretty much anyone spots something suspicious.

But other than this, it's a kick-a$$ series, and I'm glad I taped every episode of it.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

the show was kick a$$ no doubt, love street fighter.. manga makes it.. couldnt ask for more.. apart from the fact that there were a few characters missing from the game.

okay - the series included two of the four extra characters introduced to the game (which were Fei Long and Cammy) but where were Dee Jay and T.Hawk (i mean for crying out loud AKUMA was in the background to nearly every single episode)

plus i did not see Blanka, E. Honda and Balrog acted like a little b**ch.. i mean come on!

apart from that.. good show.. well worth gettin the dvd.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

Balrog is the worst character to use on any Street Fighter game. HE CAN'T KICK! That's why they made him into a wuss for the SFII V series.

A question though, did Balrog die near the end after Cammy got him with the wire? We never see.

In God WWE Trust

Re: Some annoyances with the show

No, he didn't. He was still conscious at that point - besides, if she had killed him, the Interpol guys would've been pissed at her. Killing a suspect is not cool even if the guy was guilty as sin.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

lmao the Gunna burn some musle was the funniest thing ive ever heard

Re: Some annoyances with the show

first episode: girl: "I have a feeling Ryu will never return to the island."

(we never ever see her again)

last episode: Ken: Where are you headed?
Ryu: I don't know. Wherever I guess...someplace peaceful. [the island is implied; deus ex machina]

Re: Some annoyances with the show

Yeah, took me 7 years to stumble upon this post and it annoyed me so much I had to reply...

First of all, Ken is not 3/4 Japanese... He's 1/4 Japanese since his mother was 1/2 Japanese according to the show...

Ken is a natural blonde... Want proof? Later on he has a child, this child has blonde hair...

Every single depiction of Ken, with the exception of Street Fighter II V, shows him with blonde hair... Even in flashbacks where he is shown as being 10 & 12-15 years old. (i should point out that even in Street Fighter II: V ken has blonde hair in the flashbacks of him and ryu as children...)

A ten year old boy away from his family and training in Japan with Gouken running out to buy hair dye just to maintain his fake hair color is just, well, ridiculous...

Re: Some annoyances with the show

the reason it takes so long for him do a fireball is the fact that in sf I to do a fireball was so hard and next to impossible gamers thought it was myth.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

1.Chun Li RARELY fights and is essentially a cheerleader for the entire series.
2.Chun Li NEVER has both the blue qipao AND the ox-horns hairstyle
3.Cammy is portrayed as the "Foreign (to Japan) Anglo, blonde, Christian femme fatale" with even less character than in the game
4.Where's Blanka?!
5.What the hell was up with the "hypnotizing kiss" Vega gave Chun Li?!
6.Balrog for all his size was a punk that was nearly hung to death by Cammy (when exactly do you expect to see Mike Tyson getting choked out by Barbie??)
7.(ignoring the eye issue) Sagat was huge as opposed to his normal gangly look
8. Of all the ways to make Fei Long look less like Bruce Lee to avoid a lawsuit, they make him look like Ace Ventura!
9.For Guile's trusty sidekick, Charlie isn't much of a fighter and only served the purpose of a casualty to get Guile more involved
10.Chun Li is way too bony to be the "World's Strongest Woman"

Overall:

Given the cheesy writing that seemed to be directly translated from Japanese, the entire show just became another marketable PG-13 action show considering Ryu and Ken being Goku meathead clones (with Ken being the lesser just because he has a LIFE outside fighting,) Chun Li being a mouthy damsel in distress, Cammy and Guile being your typical White soldiers, Fei Long being the typical martial arts student that can't defend his master and Balrog being another big, Black punching bag to carry on the belief that in anime, a 5'2, 110lbs. Japanese guy can easily beat down a 6'8, 330lbs. Black man like he was nothing. Capcom's well known for ignoring fan response to storylines and creating massive plot holes and the animation company that made this show was just going through the motions to get that check cleared.

If your looking for a good Street Fighter cartoon either find the American DVDs and better yet, get the movie, the ANIMATED movie with the famous Vega/Chun Li fight with her in her underwear.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

The American series hardly has better writing than the V series. The American series is as you stated: a cartoon.

Anyway, I have nothing else to do but respond to some of these...

1. Bison's suit is blue instead of red.
I dig the blue. It seems more realistic than all red. :)

2. Ken has red hair
Again, I'm cool with this. It's not like any of the V series is cannon.

3. Ryu doesn't have his famous headband
This bugged me too at first, especially with that gravity-defying cut, but I've gotten used to it by now.

4. Ryu is wearing a bracelet a girl gave him. It looks stupid and serves no purpose.
Prayer beads, brother. I believe it holds some significance in Japanese culture, so I say let 'im keep it.

5. Sagat has BOTH eyes
Yeh... he looks more badass with the scar and eyepatch, but this is like his pre-Shadowlaw honor period. Kinda cool to see him pre-obsession with defeating Ryu.

6. Vega's 17 and he's a matador?!
He's 18, but I TOTALLY agree. I never liked any of the ages. Ryu and Ken should've been about 19, Vega 20, and Chun Li 17 or 18.

7. Ryu and Ken obtain alot of injuries in this series (some could be even fatal) and yet they seem to be okay in the very next episode.
Meh, this is the case with any animated feature. They also shoot glowing orbs of destruction from the palms of their hands.

1.Chun Li RARELY fights and is essentially a cheerleader for the entire series.
Yea, she's eye candy until the end.

2.Chun Li NEVER has both the blue qipao AND the ox-horns hairstyle.
This is a fanboy thing I could do without. Long hair = sexeh my friend.

3.Cammy is portrayed as the "Foreign (to Japan) Anglo, blonde, Christian femme fatale" with even less character than in the game
She's the blonde chick in the series. Ya can't change that.

4.Where's Blanka?!
It would've been cool to include him, but he wasn't missed in the story.

5.What the hell was up with the "hypnotizing kiss" Vega gave Chun Li?!
Dunno... to make Vega more psycho than he already seemed?

6.Balrog for all his size was a punk that was nearly hung to death by Cammy (when exactly do you expect to see Mike Tyson getting choked out by Barbie??)
They played him up as a gun-toting punk in this one, for whatever reason. And Cammy is long-legged ass kicker supreme.

7.(ignoring the eye issue) Sagat was huge as opposed to his normal gangly look.
He's been huge ever since the Alpha series. His gangly SF2 physique is no more.

8. Of all the ways to make Fei Long look less like Bruce Lee to avoid a lawsuit, they make him look like Ace Ventura!
Yea, he and Ryu had a thing about gel in this series.

9.For Guile's trusty sidekick, Charlie isn't much of a fighter and only served the purpose of a casualty to get Guile more involved
Dude, Charlie kicked ASS. He trashed everyone who crossed his path, and it was pretty much a fact that a normal fighter could not defeat Bison. I preferred this Charlie to the one in the games.

10.Chun Li is way too bony to be the "World's Strongest Woman"
She's only 15, dude. Give her time to fully develop. :)

Re: Some annoyances with the show

-Ryu doesnt do the Shoryuken or Tatsumakisienpukak until the last episode...

-As someone stated already, the Hadouken charging was painfully long

-Chun-Li's shadowlaw uniform was all tucked in like a diaper at the bottom instead of loose. Very annoying.

-3 battles at the same time dragging for a few episodes. You know what part Im talking about. It took forever for those fights to end. Just stick to one at a time!

-Bison's assistant's name...what was it again? Zoltar or something? Terrible.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I can't remember if I listed stuff here before. but it would have been a bit better had they included T Hawk, Dee Jay, E Honda, and Blanka.

They show way too much footage of Bison choking out Chun Li after this same episode.

Ryu on the beach trying to do the Hado-ken, takes up what, 3-4 different episodes?

In one of the latter episodes, the first 12 minutes is just footage & commentary from when we first meet Vega in the bullfighting ring up until the new stuff, which is only 10 minutes.

We don't find out if Vega dies or not.

There's no big reunion at the end, just a shot of the explosion, & helicopters, and Ryu/Ken/ChunLi, and Guile in the foreground. Then we just get Ryu & Ken saying their goodbyes. We don't find out the condition of Dorai, Ken & Ryu don't go back to India to see Dhalsim. Ryu & Sagat don't meet up again.

It would have been cool if this had been in there, but still, it's pretty well done.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

And I must say the first half-dozen episodes, especially the first three, are brilliant.

Actually we do see that girl again, who brings Ryu Ken's letter. Just for a few seconds though, in a couple episodes up.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

Which girl are you talking about?

Do not question Uncle!

Re: Some annoyances with the show

My only complaints:

1.) Ryu and Ken being a gay couple

2.) The horrible frame recycling that takes place with Ryu's Hadoken training as well as several fight scenes near the end of the show.

3.) Charlie looking like a Microsoft employee.

Do you smell what Barack is cooking?

Re: Some annoyances with the show

All of my pet peeves concern Chun Li.

After Ken and Ryu leave Hong Kong, she does not appear at all, proving the creators added her merely for fanservice and not to flesh her out as a character.

Once she does fight again, against Bison, she disappears for the rest of the series. No, you cannot convince me that that pink-eyed (tee hee) zombie that fights Guile is Chun Li. Without an actual personality to display, what we saw was nothing but a fighting cypher whose sole purpose was providing a cheap antagonist and, again, fanservice. In the end she goes back to normal, but it's too late - hell, she does not even get a proper ending at all. I would've liked to see how she reacted to the news of the attack on Dorai, but alas, the show provides closure only for Ken and Ryu.

Finally... no bikini shots. As a character used only for fanservice she got to wear some cloth-deprived outfits here and there - along with much welcome panty shots in a certain fight - but a bikini somehow seemed out of reach for the creators. I mean, come on. It made no sense not to go the whole nine miles with making her "natural talents" - tip of the hat to Bison - prominent but still short of having her naked at all. Quite a wavering sense of standards we see in display here.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

Ryu & ken are never depicted as gay. They have a brotherly love for each other and that is it...

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I started getting annoyed when vega appeared.. It took way too long! Ryu was on the beach & Ken was stuck in a cage for like 4 eps.. Could have made it more fast paced and added in more characters like Blanka. Also kinda annoyed Ryu pronounced his attacks in english; "hurricane kick, rising uppercut". Ending was a little fast too..

Other than that, the show was pretty good. They should definitely revisit and pick up where they left off.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

I swear, Ryu & Ken weren't 'gay'. They were friends. Very good friends. I can't stand the Americanization of brotherly love being considered 'gay' all the time. There is a line. Ryu & Ken weren't really a 'couple' per se, but were only intimate when they fought, becuase that's how they met and knew each other so well from having the same master. They do that flashback many times, but we never see thier "master". You can have an emotional intimacy without having a physical intimacy. Yes, I will admit Ryu & Ken were emotionally bonded and fought each other til they bled... they didn't caress each other! Geesh.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

Totally agree with your statement on the brother/ intimate relationship.

The only real jar I had with this series was the time it took for ryu to perform his hadoken and general dragging of some Seneca for example the one were cammy takes out chun li father. I love cammy And didn't mind they changed her up for the series and the more i see of cammy the better but gezz I was getting so board it just took so long. This is just one example.

Re: Some annoyances with the show

Keep in mind, Ken and Ryu are younger in this so Sagat has both eyes in this because he most likely hadn't faced Dans father yet.
