The Bridges of Madison County : Who has problems with Francesca coming clean via her will?

Who has problems with Francesca coming clean via her will?

Not me.

I'd rather know the truth about my parents than believe in any fairy tales.

I'm not passing judgement on what she did/didn't do but at least her kids can respect her more for telling them the truth.

Would they have had MORE respect for her if she had told her kids while she was living or did she take the easy way out by putting it in her will and thereby avoiding any judgment/guilt they might put down on her?

Re: Who has problems with Francesca coming clean via her will?

Interesting questions and thoughts. I actually don't feel she had any obligation to tell them anything. Children do not have a right to know every thought their parents have or everything they have ever done. When I was a kid I certainly THOUGHT that my parents marital issues and problems were 100% my business but I was completely wrong.

I felt like her revealing all of this information the way she did was her way of trying to share a life lesson with them or something (although part of me wonders whether such a lesson would have been more useful to them before they were middle-aged and in troubled/doomed marriages). Additionally it seemed that at least part of her reason was that she had to reveal it because of her wishes to be cremated and how confusing that was for them (and we do see that the son was in an uproar over it); they needed a solid explanation for this request in order to follow through with it and not assume she was just being senile or crazy.

Her other thought could simply have been what good would have come from telling them any of this while she was alive. Surely nothing positive would have come of it.

For me personally?

If I was Francesca I would have told my kids about the affair at some point after their father had died.

I can understand holding those kinds of things back but that's just not for me.

I'm curious! What would your motivation be for telling them? And I'm not saying you should or shouldn't, just to be clear. :) But what would your reason or goal be in telling them?

I just would want them (my kids) to know that about me.

When you're leaving earth why take the truth/honesty about who you are with you?

Let the people you leave behind know who you really are, warts and all.

Almost everyone has parts of their life that they're ashamed of or they struggle trying to figure out how to bring it to light without being judged.

I think everyone can understand that, it's a universal emotion
