Britney Spears : 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
At whose peak? Britney's or Madonna's?

Madonna.
Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
In terms of touring, two of Madonna's tours are on the list of top 20 highest grossing tours of all time (adjusted for inflation): first in 2008-09 ($450 million in 2016 dollars) and again in 2012 ($315 million in 2016 dollars). Britney's tours haven't made the all-time list (though her 2009 Circus tour was one of the highest-grossing of the 2000s). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_111cof_highest-grossing_concert_tours
In terms of albums, Madonna's worldwide best-selling non-compilation album, True Blue (1986), sold 25 million copies (7 million in the U.S.). Her best-selling non-compilation album in the U.S., Like a Virgin (1984), sold 10 million copies. By comparison, Britney's best-selling non-compilation album, both worldwide and in the U.S., Baby One More Time (1999), sold 30 million copies (12.2 million in the U.S.). (But we must remember the population of the country and the world grew dramatically between Madonna's time and Britney's debut, so that makes those numbers a little less impressive.)
In terms of singles, Billboard compiled a list of Britney's top 20 singles (http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/464875/britney-spears-20-biggest-billboard-hits) and it's interesting that she's actually had more top 10 Hot 100 hits after 2004 than before. They also did a list of Madonna's top 40 singles (http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/499398/madonnas-40-biggest-billboard-hits). I'm not sure how you would compare these lists, maybe count how many of Britney's were in the first five years after her debut vs. how many of Madonna's were in the first five years after her debut, but I don't have time for that. :)

Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
This is unrelated but what do those album sales say about Beyonce and Taylor Swift, arguably the biggest female pop stars for some time now in an even larger populated country than the late 1990s and early 2000s and Adele still having two diamond certified albums since 2010?
Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
Britney was so hot and big at that time, she became one of the only celebrities thus far to collaborate with Madonna on a piece of music. I think they have each had they're highest points of their careers and it varies.
Britney will never be bigger than Madonna altogether, but there was a time when she was

Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
Madonna had way more hit songs during her peak than Britney did. The cultural impact they had on the world is probably pretty equal though.
Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
you're wrong madonna's songs have way way more impact and significance than britney's little girl fake pop singer songs.
i say little girl bc her songs are so bad and so 12 year old little girl in quality songs and so singing about things she has no experience with whereas madonna was a full blown adult when she hit it big in 1983, she was 25 so the songs were realistic in this way.
none of britney's best songs are as good as madonna's best songs. even mandonna's first 3 pop songs in 1983 are better than britney's best songs and those are the 3 worst songs madonna ever made.

Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
I think Britney is the most iconic & popular female artist of the decade 2000-2009. Madonna had much bigger tours though plus Madonna had Hung Up, 4 Minutes and Music which topped more than 35 international charts. No one can touch her, still.
Anyway, Britney is usually claimed as the biggest female artist of the 2000s. I don't deny that

Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
At that, that was her peak, 2000-2001 Britney Spears was 15 times bigger than Madonna ever was.

Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
Yes she was. I remember like it was yesterday. She was everywhere.
Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
are you crazy? madonna is the biggest musical star of all time other than michael jackson. but its' unfair to compare them in their peak am years bc britney had the advantage of social media and a much bigger tabloid and entertainment media than madonna ever had.
so while yes it seems like britney was more famous than madonna in her peak years of being famous she had those advantages which can never be an accurate portrayal of how famous she ever was in comparing to madonna.
plus it's not real fame anyway britney's social media fame bc it's not earned fairly. it's like instagram models they aren't real models bc they didn't have to work fairly to become models.
if britney had not had any of these things if she was a pop star in the '80s she wouldn't have been half as famous as madonna.

Re: 1999-2004: Was she bigger than Madonna?
Britney who?
All these above posters are probably from her era. Madonna is so famous is unimaginable. There are times when she is off or doesnt try as much but even those times she is racking in huge numbers. Around that time she took out Music which was pretty monumental. I actually think it would've sold a lot more if you can imagine had she promoted it more. But she's never been a real sellout and actually does her own music unlike Spears who gets helped from a ton of hands, is directed, and even needs a conservator to order her around like a kid.
Without strife, your victory has no meaning.
Without strife, you do not advance.
Without strife, there is only stagnation.
