Alien Resurrection : Boxing gloves

Boxing gloves

So..... any reason Cal is wearing boxing gloves randomly mid film?

Re: Boxing gloves

Short answer:

She needed an excuse to leave the room.

Sorry, but that's all I could come up with. Blame it on piss-poor writing.

Long answer:

As the scene begins, they're watching the "Gun Shopping Channel" (Don't ask) and Call is NOT wearing boxing gloves as she takes a sip of homebrew and asks Johner if he put battery acid in it. We then cut away to Brad Dourif kissing a Xenomorph through the glass. (Again, don't ask.) When we cut back to Call she's leaning over her cup with her hands out of view, then brings them up to show she's wearing BOXING GLOVES! (Where did they come from, since it appears that she never left her chair...? Don't ask.) Her attempts to take another drink result in her accidentally knocking her cup over, and angering Johner, who tells her to take a walk outside. She uses that as her excuse to go to Ripley's cell to fulfill her mission to kill Ripley. It's only after getting there does she find that the scientists have already removed the embryo, so there's no point in killing Ripley now.

The exact same thing could've been accomplished if after a drink Call just complained about the battery acid, then said "I think I'm going to be sick!" and left the room.

Re: Boxing gloves

Best explanation I've ever heard, I'll take it! :)

Re: Boxing gloves

I think it's just one of the many visual jokes and a reference to some drinking game.

I also love how the scene ends! Johner gets angry in true organutan fashion (like before) she knocks over his cup and then he knocks over Christi's cup as well! Haha.

Re: Boxing gloves

By that time she was supposedly drunk on Johner's brew, and was displaying something that had to come across as stupid drunken behavior so she'd have an excuse to exit the room without anyone questioning her leaving or following.

To sum it up: bad script rewriting :)

Re: Boxing gloves

I think it was just random weirdness by Call. It was a very Johnny Depp kinda move, like in Benny & Joon, when he makes waffles by smacking pancakes with a tennis racquet. The boxing gloves probably came from the same place where the basketball came from. Obviously they have Dick's Sporting Goods on the space station.

Re: Boxing gloves

^^^ I like this!

In heaven everything is fine.

Re: Boxing gloves

its the movies slapstick humour!

Re: Boxing gloves

Call faking her drunkenness was a way for her to be able to get out and roam about the Auriga in search of Ripley, without anyone suspecting her being up to no good.

The boxing gloves, that's a little french "comedy" we can thank Jeunet for.
