The Rock : The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I think 'The Rock' is the best action movie ever made.. come on!! the plot, the script, the acting, directing and the score!!

Do you agree? If not, what is the best action movie ever made then?

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Sorry to be boring, but I agree. I'd also include Die Hard and Terminator 2 in the top tier.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I enjoyed the movie but thought it was too cheesy in parts and extraordinarily unrealistic in others. My favorite is "Heat"

Heat is more of a crime drama/thriller than an action movie. It has a great shootout but it's not really apart of the genre.

To answer to the OP's question, it's certainly one of them, I think.

Thanks, I'd be lost without your guidance.

You're welcome. Although I know you're being sarcastic I'll take it as a compliment anyway. My point still stands though, Heat is not an action movie.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Don't get all butt hurt cause you got told.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

"The Rock" is a great action movie and I LOVE it.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

It's entertaining, and is Michael Bay's best film, but it doesn't touch the likes of Die Hard. The car chase is obviously chucked in for effect, and there's an over-abundance of cheesy slo-mo and empty cliché. I see it as a dumb-but-fun thrill ride with a fantastic score.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

The score is awful, just generic Zimmer "Do-Do, Do Do-Do, Do Do-Do, Do Do-Do Do" played in whenever something is moving fast on screen.

Massively overrated film, feels like a patchwork knock-off of action movies from the previous 10 years. Writers are TV-movie hacks, Bay's a hack, Cage is miscast, only redeeming feature is it doesn't feel 2+ hours long.

The best action directors actually care about the material they're working off and try to keep things grounded in reality with believable characters but this had head-slap stupid moments every couple of minutes.

Bay still thinks he's directing music videos and a poor imitation of Tony Scott.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Since you didn't care to share anything on which you think is best, please inform us on which you think are the greatest action movies? "Personally I think you're a *beep* idiot"- Sean Connery

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

One of them but Hard Boiled is

You killed Captain Clown, YOU KILLED CAPTAIN CLOWN-The Joker on Batman TAS

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

THE ROCK is the 90s DIE HARD....meaning its with no doubt among the 2 best action movies ever...what the hell:it IS the bestafro.gif

Trolls dont have an opinion....just an urge to compensate their frustration about themselves!!!

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

This is yet another Bay piece of crap. Just about everything about this thing is bad. The most ridiculous part is of course the description of VX the the depiction of how it works. To compare this to Die Hard, is just plain wrong. Die Hard was fun, this is pure torture to sit through. Cage is unbearably lame and Connery just seems overly arrogant and boring. The terrorist soldiers at more goofy than badass. It's all a huge mess. Usual Michael Bay low quality movie.

This is yet another troll piece of crap....Just about everything about this post is bad....reading your redundant hater propaganda is as useles as fartin in an elevator....It's all a huge mess. Usual troll low quality post.
can you say ''redundancy''??

Trolls dont have an opinion....just an urge to compensate their frustration about themselves!!!

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Really? That was the best you could do, as your opinion differed from mine? An open question was asked, and I answered it as I saw fit. So by your account, everyone who does not think this movie is fantastic, is not allowed to voice an opinion, and are by default "trolling"? You're a moron. The only one here posting redundant crap is you. *beep* off.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

i can do a lot better...but in your case ''copy and paste'' will do just fine, loser:)

And that last comment. Not sure how i'm supposed to explain that one to my wife....

Anyway. Things to do, people to see. Goodbye.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Top 5 at least.

I'd rank True Lies up there as well.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

It's kind of a guilty pleasure, but best action film ever... no not even close.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

It's definitely one of the best. What actually makes it top 2 IMHO is the score. Hans Zimmer made this movie truly and beyond epic. I find Matrix to be better in many aspects, but for me these two movies are the best action movies ever made.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Point Break and The Rock are the best action movies aver in my opinion.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I think that although it is a very entertaining action, the best I think not. There are more iconic movies in this genre. Terminator, and Die Hard are just a few. Don't get me wrong though. I love The Rock

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I''m not sure I could give it best of all time but it's up there with the greats like T2 and Die Hard

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

What makes this movie so great are all the one liners that stick with you over the years... some that come to mind;

Walmack! You piece of schhhht!

Winnershh go home with the prom queen. -Carla was the prom queen!

Im from the Federa... F B I... Im Stanley Goodspeed! -well of coursssch you are.

Its you, you're the rocket man.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I love that movie but we can say The Rock is one of the best.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Definitely one of them, Die Hard, Point Break, T2, Hardboiled, The Raid 1+2, numerous jackie Chan and Jet Li movies, but on pure grin inducing re-watchable stylized fun I gotta
go with Con Air!

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I just watched it.. its definitely a great action film but Die Hard and Face/Off are better for example.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Not sure about THE best, but it is certainly near the top, and it is probably my personal favorite action movie of all time. Other than them exaggerating the effects of VX gas for a more dramatic effect, and the total failure of the Navy SEALs (an entire team would never enter the same unknown room at the same time without it first being secured with a safe exit), there is nothing to dislike about The Rock. The plot, the setting, the casting, the pace, the dialogue, the few comedic scenes expertly sprinkled throughout, etc, are all perfect.

One thing that really puts this movie over the top for me though, is the fact that I am a HUGE Bond fan, and seeing Connery essentially play an even more bada$$ version of Bond at age 66 is just about the coolest thing ever for me. He was PERFECT for the role of John Mason, and his performance is flawless.

I believe this was also the first R-Rated movie I ever saw (I was 7 when we got the VHS tape), so nostalgia is also a major factor for me. At the time, the only Bond movies I had were VHS copies of From Russia With Love, Diamonds are Forever and A View to a Kill, so Connery was already one of my favorite actors by the time I saw The Rock.

Well whadda ya know, typing this out has made me realize that it has been far too long since I last watched The Rock, so off I go to pop in the Blu Ray!

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I disagree just because 'the best' is a bit too strong of a word. It covers too many things and people can always find something bad about something and talk it down. It is the same as when people claim whatever film 'worst movie ever made' and people won't take them seriously.

This is definitely one of my favorite movie of all time though.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Nothing, and I mean nothing will beat the adrenaline rush you get with Aliens...but The Rock has the best humour in an action movie...

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Only if you're a pre-pubescent teen and haven't seen very many action movies to compare it to.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

No, it is actually way down the list of the best action movies ever made. That being said, if you are in the mood for a dumb, over-the-top and occasionnaly quite funny action extravaganza, it certainly is not a bad choice.

As for the best action movies ever made, well naturally that is a question of opinion AND on how to categorize what is an action movie and what is not. For me, action movies can almost be divided in several sub-categories. For example, some John Woo movies, while not to everybody's tastes, would certainly be classified among the best action movies ever made, most notably Hard Boiled, The Killer, Face/Off and A Better Tomorrow. Than again, someone could say A Better Tomorrow for example if more of a crime story than an action film.

Continuing on asian action films, I thought The Raid 1 and 2 are probably the best action/martial-arts films I have seen in recent years for sure. I would also add some Donnie Yen movies, like Flashpoint especially, and Killzone.

Bill Foster: I'm the bad guy?...How did that happen?

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

its my favorite Michael Bay movie. I gave it an "8"

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I can't believe no one in this thread mentioned Lethal Weapon

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Yeah definitely up there with you favourites

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

great movie, but Die Hard is the best in every aspect.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

Loved 'The Rock' as a teenager.
Recently I watched it again… and was all like What the hell was I thinking!? After careful reflection, I wouldn't rate it better than a 5 out of 10 anymore.
This flick has a ridiculous plot with holes the size of Bay Area; one-dimensional characters; props and dialogues coming across as though concocted by a director of music videos (wait…); video game level-like mazes, boss fights and weak-spots; and most importantly, the action scenes didn't convince me, especially due to an overuse of slowmo footage and explosions as if everything in the world of Michael Bay was made out of Semtex instead of steel, concrete or stone. I'd take gritty realism over this any day!

I don't know your definition of an action movie (for example: is an action thriller with a focus on the thrill an action movie, too)? I'd consider any movie an action movie where a considerable part of the runtime is devoted to action scenes. So, my top list of action-packed movies no matter the subgenre (only in alphabetical order) would include, instead of 'The Rock',

• 'Casino Royale', for the most ass- and door-kicking 007 in history
• 'Collateral', despite making the list only just; the shootouts are just too good!
• 'Haywire', for clever action scenes and the only convincing female lead in such a movie
• 'Heat', for the best climactic gunbattle in cinema history
• 'Ironclad', for gritty medieval combat realism
• 'John Wick', despite its sorry excuse for a plot, for the most capable gunman in movie history
• 'Killer Elite' (2011), for the overall choreography of the fight scenes and nice atmosphere
• 'Le Pacte des Loups', for extraordinary fight scenes
• 'Live Free or Die Hard', the best of the franchise imho
• 'Proof of Life', despite making the list only just, the camp-attack is splendid action material
• 'Ronin', for nail-gnawing action scenes and car chases
• 'Sahara', for the overall impression of the "funny-yet-realistic" fight scenes
• 'Sherlock Holmes' (2009), for fights and action scenes both cleverly choreographed and well-shot
• 'Starship Troopers', for relentless violence and for indulging violence while still carrying a message
• 'Taken I', for highly realistic hand-to-hand combat
• 'The Equalizer', for a hero who manages to kill dozens without ever firing a gun
• 'The Mechanic' (2011), for cleverly-concocted action scenes
• 'The Town', for shootouts well-done
• 'Troy', for the most well-choreographed melee in cinema history
• The original 'Bourne' trilogy, perhaps the best action-packed movies ever made (even though I'm no fan of shaky cam at all)

As for the best of these, I'm split between 'Bourne Ultimatum', 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Ironclad'.

Perhaps many of you will disagree on grounds of terms ("what is an action movie?")… however, this is how I feel at least. I should add that I do not deem a flick like 'Universal Soldier' a real action movie nor a worthwhile one. In my opinion it would fall under the exploitation genre. As far as I'm concerned, a movie should always want to tell a story and not confine itself to showing off a few good bits of choreography.

You wouldn't read a book that's about a single fight; you wouldn't listen to a track of music that's only chorus; you wouldn't play a video game that consists only of one level. Right?

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

I had never attempted to see it until recently. I was skeptical thinking it might be 'overrated.' My first attempt at watching it a few weeks ago, I kind of 'gave up' about 10 minutes into it.

My 2nd attempt I thought I'll just force myself to watch it. It did turn out to be one of the best action movies I've ever seen and in my opinion perhaps the best Bruckheimer movie I've ever seen -even somewhat better than one of my favorite action movies -Con Air.

Re: The Rock, the best action movie ever made?

It's definitely up there.

There's a lot of great ones I'd hold among the best such as: Die Hard, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-man 2, The Amazing Spider-man 2, Mad Max: Fury Road, Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dredd, Rush Hour 2, Hot Fuzz, Goldeneye, The Matrix, The Dark Knight, Con Air, Lethal Weapon, Enter the Dragon, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, 3:10 to Yuma, John Wick, Kung Fu Hustle, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
