David Ogden Stiers : What happened to his voice?

What happened to his voice?

All through MASH, his voice stayed pretty much the same. Then MASH ended in 1983, and as early as 1986 when David played a role on ALF, his voice had become alot darker and raspier, about the same voice he has today. What made it change so drastically? It cant be just age can it?

Re: What happened to his voice?

The upper-class Bostonian accent and voice he adopted for his character in MASH was ACTING.
He doesn't really sound anything like Charles Emerson Winchester.
His 'real' voice is gorgeous - very sexy - but he can change the pitch/accent as required by the role he's playing. That's why he does a lot of voice acting for Disney.

Re: What happened to his voice?

Yes, he was just putting on a voice for MASH. He's pretty well known for being able to use different dialects and accents.

And I agree with imdbkay his voice is totally sexy!

Re: What happened to his voice?

If you would like to hear a great sample of his talent for voices check out "The Hunt For Red October" audio book. He does all the character voices, even the women. It was the first audio book I ever heard and it really set a high standard for all the others. He can do any accent!

Re: What happened to his voice?

He still has a nice voice. If you watch North and South, you'll be able to hear that it's not so bad. He doesn't habitually smoke, but yes, a voice can change with age.

Re: What happened to his voice?

His narration of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," not to mention doing the voice of the clock Cogsworth fantastic!!

Re: What happened to his voice?

Another good example is when he played the villain in Jungle 2 Jungle-the villain's a Russian.

Too much sugar in your coffee this morning?-Kari to Grant on Mythbusters.
