Joaquin Phoenix : Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
Re: Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
The first film I saw was Quills. It was released the same year as Gladiator. I didn't realise it was the same actor. He was so different, both physically and as a character. Brilliant in both.

Parenthood. Of course, back then I didn't know it was him.

Re: Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
I saw him first in To Die For, Clay Pigeons and 8mm but Gladiator was the first "big" role.

Hmmm, I guess Parents, although I didn't know who he was at the time. I did know when Inventing the Abbotts came out. The movie was based on a favorite short story of mine, so I was eager to see it. Have to confess, I was much more wrapped up in Billy Crudup's storyline. I thought he and Joanna Going were fabulous on screen together, very believable as a 50s couple.

Signs.
We have what we seek, it is there all the time, and if we give it time, it will make itself known.

Re: Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
He blew me away the scene at the end where he's talking about the ballpark and he's in charge of everyone. Amazing.
Re: Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
Space Camp.. he was so good in that!!
Re: Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
Unsure if this was my first Joaquin Phoenix film. I began to take notice of his acting and his smoldering good looks in "Gladiator. Been a fan ever since.

I think it was either 8MM or Clay Pigeons.
Re: Your first Joaquin Phoenix movie?
Saw "Her" with an ex-girlfriend. I loved the movie then, but couldn't go back to it now. But it was a great introduction to the actor. Then I saw "You Were Never Really Here". He's easily one of the best actors out there currently. Though the whole childhood-trauma shtick he has going in a lot of his movies does get old after a while. It begins to seem as though he just takes these roles as a way of showing substitute characters that depict how traumatized he is. It's compelling the first couple of times, but then it becomes pathetic. I enjoyed Joker, but didn't like how his character still had a lot of self-pity and pathetic behaviour going on, even by the time the film was almost over.
