Richard Harris : Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Of course, he fits the description in book one. It wrenches my heart out to see Micheal Gambon as Dumbledore in POA and above I write harry potter fan fictions and only ever write dumbledore as Richard Harris.
I miss him!

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

I know its hard to see a different dumbledore, Harris was Dumbledore when I saw ss, he was what i saw when i read the books, he was perfect, at least to me.

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Harris was the best thing about those films, without him the whole affair has lost it's gravitas. Gambon is a poor replacment.

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Not the bestsimply WAS dumbledoreand with gambon as being the only replacement its hardly a real questionthis man doesnt know a think about dumbeldores character and harris embodied it perfectly

Perfection in darkness

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

I agreeHarris was brilliant as Dumbledore! He wasn't too old or calm as some say but he was probably just as JKR intended him to be! He had the twinkle in his eyes and ACTUALLY WORE THE GLASSES! He even showed Dumbledores' eccentricity perfectly in that one scene where he ate the jelly beans in SS and said "Alas, earwax!"
Gambon is bipolar Dumbledore or something! The whole scene with HAARREHHDIDJAPUTYAHNEMITTHEGOBLETOFFIAH!? makes me cringe at how WRONG it is! I'm surprised no one bothered mentioning to him that he was portraying the character completely wrong! The only scenes where he did a fairly good job were in PoA when he was talking about dreams when harry was "asleep" and when they came back from the time turner sequence and he was like, "did what? goodnight." XD
I think if Gambon actually made an effort AND READ THE BOOKS (yes, he has NOT read the books >.<), then maybe he would understand the Dumbledore we all love, and not portray him as some sort of weird old man who dresses like a hobo and yells at everyone most of the time!

I'm so glad you said that!!! It's been bugging me for a long time! When someone is 115 years old he will need his glasses all the time! 2000And I hate his grayhish beard that just looks dirty.

And the hole part when he attacks Harry after his name comes out of the goblet! WTF!!! The hole point of Dumbledore is that he's always calm, to the point of beeing a little detached! He doesn't need to scream or attack students, he can do occlumency!

I realy hate Gambon's interpretation! He just looks like an old #%?%$"!@ When I first saw the third movie I had to re-read the book, so that he didn't change my good opinion of Dumbledore! He's my favorite carater in the books but now, thanks to Gambon, he's my least favorite carater in the movies!

Richard Harris understood Dumbledore, were his power was, from his presence! Well at least we had a REAL Dumbledore in the first two movies!

"Snape didn't kill Dumbledore, Micheal Gambon did"

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

I've learnt to live with that Goblet of Fire scene, much as it irks me. What I find wholly more infuriating is the scene in Order of the Phoenix where Umbridge has sacked Trewalney and is trying to remove her from the castle. In the book, Dumbledore comes in with his usual veneer, clearly intimidating Umbridge, but the way he speaks to her doesn't align with that manner at all. He is calm, polite, almost sardonic, but authoritive. Richard Harris would have nailed that. I've read elsewhere people criticising Harris taking the 'frail' interpretation of Dumbledore too far. A little harsh I feel, seeing as he was ill when he played the role.

What puzzles me is how Gambon's portrayal has been allowed to slip through the net. The screenwriter has remained the same throughout the series, surely he would take offence to inconsistencies in continuity?

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

I blame Gambon's failure to portray him on his not having read the books >.<

You can say that again when He died thats when dumbledore died

Gambon just doesnt get Albus Dumbledore

I totally agree.cry.gif

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Not only that but those who have read thru all the books have even more reason to regret RIchard Harris' death.(i am being vague for the sake of those who only watch the films as they come out) but those who have read to the end know what I mean

It is not our abilities that make us who we areit is our choices

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

ohh i wish he would come back and Gambon can play his brother Aberforth

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

He was the best Dumbledore ever. Whenever I reread the books, I picture Albus with his voice, even after three wretched turns with Michael Gambon. I miss his Dumbledore as well.

But to me, what is saddest to me is that the world's best King Arthur is gone. There wasn't even really time for a passing of the torch - no one could have ever been as good, but it would have been fitting if someone had made a new version of Camelot and King Richard had played one of the older roles.

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

I really can not stand Micheal Gambon as Dumbledore. I became too attached to Richard Harris. He seems more gentle and fragile than Gambon. He is too agressive for an elderly wizard. I am not a fan. RIP

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Harris sounded like he was on his death bed the entire movie. At least Gambon has the life and spirit that Dumbledore did in the books.

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

that's because he WAS on his death bed when he was acting as Dumbledore.

Re: Richard Harris, The best dumbledore?

Shouldn't have played him then, knowing he wouldn't see the end. Inconsiderate to the fans. Then we might have had Michael Gambon from the start and he would have been directed properly, and nobody would complain, because he would have been given Harris's majestic robes and beard.
