Happiness : i hate this film

Re: i hate this film

I loved everything about this film.

To be shocked by a film is what most good filmmakers strive for I'm sure. Or maybe not to shock, but to engrave. Filmmakers want to engrave viewers with an image, a picture, or a memory of their film - and this one did just that.
Some people on this board hated it, some loved it, everyone will remember it.

I wish more there were more filmmakers like Todd Solondz (sorry if I spelled wrong).

Re: i hate this film

EVERYONE of you needs to go take a spelling lesson. I can't even understand your points if you can't even take the time to spell your words correctly.

Re: i hate this film

this film was the worst film ive ever seen. it was so boring, with characters that no-one actually gives a *beep* about. seriously, how can anyone enjoy it? i never comment on a film when it is bad, i dont usually feel the need, but im actually so pissed off its wasted my saturday night i feel i have to let you guys have it. ive seen films from all over the world, from miike takashi to david lynch, but this tossrag just makes me wonder what the hell these guys were thinking when getting the equipment out, so to speak.

with the exception of lara FB, who i think was awesome in twin peaks and not bad here, it holds absolutely no interest, and what farks me off the most is the recognition that fat karnt seymout hoffman gets, when he plays the same fekking character every time around, a fat useless soppy mug but he's hailed as Hollywoods next best thing. mental.

Until the next 'worst' one you see because that's what all people like you say.
Boring? Your personal opinion!
Characters nobody cares about?? Same as above but funny how you feel the need to judge for all of us.
Maybe it's not about 'enjoying' it but much more than you'd comprehend.

Grab a copy of 'Twin Peaks' and sit down and enjoy Lara, I think this film is way above your head.

I never comment on a film when it is bad.

Why change what you know, it only confuses you (clearly as you can't spell for sh!t), and because we're happy for you to do what you usually do... say nothing!!

Philip Seymour Hoffman is a fat useless soppy mug but Lara Flynn Boyle, you think is awesome?! Hmm, yep, in a sentence, sums you up perfectly! You can dislike a film but when you get personal like you've done, you've got more problems than just this film!!

Re: i hate this film

This movie is way overrated. The story is so easy. Just put some phedophiles in it, and everybody thinks the movies is good. The acting was great, but the storyline and the details incredible bad.
The 'Russian' guy. So bad. His accent wasn't even Eastern European. And what about his wife? Hello stereotype?

2/10 for the good acting skills.

I couldn't agree more!

Re: i hate this film

I love black comedies. But I think they pull the "Comedy Card" to be crude or just very ... dark, and there isn't much comedy or satire. This movie qualifies.

Re: i hate this film

Yea, like everyone said, it was a great movie, accomplishes its goal. But yeah, I still hated it.

I remember watching it, going, "GOD, i hate this movie....but it's not a bad movie at all." It's meant to be one of those movies that leaves a bad taste in your mouth afterwards. And for that, I admire it. But I also hate it, and, too, will never ever watch it again lol. It was too much for me, way depressing, even the supposed jokes depressed the *beep* out of me. And, yeah, also because I totally could not stand any of the characters. Like you said, the most tolerable one was Joy, who totally was a dunce, which makes you lose respect for her. Horribly good *beep* horrible, lol.

Re: i hate this film

I loved this movie. Its so messed up and deals with some of the grossed subjects...well especially Dylan Baker's character. But anyway its so over the top it makes these horrible things hillarious.

I mean like Dylan Baker with the cops was priceless dark comedy.
Bill:"I suppose your here to talk about Ronald Farber".
(Cops look at each other confused)
Bill:"I mean...Johnny Grazzo".

This film is dark comedy done right.I mean Alan talking dirty to Joy was so funny i was rolling. If you take it too serious...you might be scared for life.If you take it for the darkest breed of comedy...which i think the way it was directed was the way it was meant to be taken...you will enjoy it.

That being said I haven't seen any other Solondz films...but i want to see the others after this gem.

Re: i hate this film

Billy : Would ever *beep* me?
Dad: No.. I'd jerk off instead

Re: i hate this film

Yeah, no this was just weird and gross. I really think Todd is a pedo or something.

"If he truly loved her he'd let her hit the pavement."-The Big Bang Theory

Re: i hate this film

I felt sympathy for all main characters; Joy, for her unhappiness. Allen for his inability to be attractive for the woman he obsesses about. Bill for his failure as a father. Helen for being superficial and unhappy.

I feel sympathy, because all of them needs something that their not able to get. at least not for the moment. They have obsessions and they feel powerless.

This movie is great because we even i even get sympathy for the devil.

Re: i hate this film

'Extremely challenging' would pretty much sum this up for me.Reminiscent of a train-wreck but with a train filled with cartoon characters. It felt like watching some kid pull the legs off insects.
It seems to answer all the worst questions with the best answers.
It's been a while since I've watched a such a cringe-fest.
This kinda reminded me of 'Magnolia' meets 'The Girl Next Door' The former for plot arrangement and hopeless characters, the latter for dealing with a very uncomfortable series of events in a thought provoking and shamefully blunt way.

I enjoyed the movie but kinda felt bad about that fact.

The director obviously gets a great deal of sadistic pleasure from dragging his audiences through the morality mangle as any modern, dry witted stand-up comic would, almost encouraging the groans and heckles from his audience rather than the polite applause of the bored. How he managed to maintain this 'assault' for 2 hours 20 minutes is testament to the strength of the script and un-enviably believable performances of the actors involved.

This movie brands the fine line between comedy and tragedy deep into your psyche.... without whiskey !

Re: i hate this film

I think its a great movie although in places hard to watch. Its refreshing to someone take a different angle and run with it without hiding and trying to please everyone who sees it. Proper film making in that sense

Re: i hate this film

Overall, I liked it. However, I do NOT understand how It's labeled as a "comedy". I didn't laugh out loud one time. There were parts that were somewhat amusing, but raping little boys trumps whatever passed as humor.
I gave it 8 stars for ballsiness and originality, but it is NOT a comedy.

Re: i hate this film

I hated it. Couldn't even bear to finish it because of how much it made me cringe.

Re: i hate this film

Yeah this was terrible I couldn't relate to anyone, nobody had any confidence and those that did just seemed to be "acting" too hard and came off pretentious like the one sister, I get that there are people like this but it just really bothered me to watch them, like the strange prank call jack off guy (Hoffman) finally gets a chance to do what he wants with his neighbor but hes too much of a pansy, that makes me cringe. Then the "father son talks" were even worse.

I don't see how anyone can like this I found a few things funny but If you want an odd ball comedy I say go for The Royal Tenenbaums, much better. Maybe this just didn't age well, I felt like I was watching the worst episode of Seinfeld that wouldn't end, like I was stuck in some strange 90's loop with the most unusual people you could find, The only person I liked was the girls Dad, and he gets no story development at all, and like 5 minutes of screen time. And the girl gives that stupid Russian 500 dollars for her stuff back? Yeah right.

Re: i hate this film

As a film dealing with taboo topics , it is a bold film. But the child rape thing was too unsettling. If I remember correctly one of the victim had to be hospitalised. Some people say here that the film sympathizes(God forbid!) with him or his situation , or views him from a humane angle .But even if the paedophile was a good husband or caring towards his own child or had a few likeable qualities but all that boils down to nothing when he raped the little boys. At that scene where he told his son that it was great and he will do it again(was it the DARK comedy purpose? whatever) I so wished I could reach through the screen and slit this ficking scumbag pervert's throat.

Re: i hate this film

You have a right to dislike it/hate it. Film is a subjective experience. Why you hated it is kinda why I loved it. It was misanthropic, like you said, it was bleak, it was darkly comic and depressing. It didn't flinch away from the harsh reality of humanity.

Re: i hate this film

Good call on misanthropic.

Re: i hate this film

What a piece of crap film. Not because of the subject matter, because it was poorly written, flowed horribly, the pacing was almost unbearable, not interesting, and I am not sure why I kept watching.

Maybe because it was so highly rated, how I will never understand.
