Casey Affleck : I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
Hollywood left itself no choice. If Affleck wins they lose all moral high ground protesting another sexual harasser - the US's current Commander in Chief.
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
i get why they nominated affleck since he's the front runner but they didn't have to nominate gibson. dga didn't. so do they really care? i doubt it.

Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
A question that I'd like answered by the people, specially public figures, who are rallying against him, is how they can request this "punishment" from the Academy when there's no way any of them can be 100% certain what the truth is. No matter how you interpret the facts at hand, we still don't know the whole truth because the case didn't go to court as BOTH parties, not just Affleck, decided to settle. Doesn't the fact that 2 other women who were working on the project vehemently defended Affleck(despite the allegations suggesting the harassment was ongoing and pervasive) cast even the slightest shadow of doubt over the "belief" that he must be guilty?
As far as I'm concerned, the allegations may be total truth, total fiction and anything in between. But I prefer to stand by "innocent until proven guilty" instead of attempting to 16d0make an example of someone to the benefit of what one believes to be a good cause.
Even if he'd been proven guilty, I personally wouldn't have felt like he shouldn't get an acting award that is not by any means reflective of character and humanity. Such exclusion would raise a LOT of issues. Should actors with a history of DUI for example be disqualified or should it just be about gender/race issues? Should the ones already punished by law or to the satisfaction of the injured party be punished again?
I haven't seen Denzel's performance in The Fences so I don't even know if CA deserves to win or not. But I hope the Academy votes on performance and nothing else.

Well said!
I didn't see any of the performances yet, but I would love Casey to win.
He should have already won for "Jesse James" years ago, which is still one of the best performances ever!
Denzel is an icon and an actor's actor with many friends, so it's a tight race of course.
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
Everyone nominated is a top class performance. I saw all the films and to be honest, Manchester by the Sea film I thought was boring and I didn't really feel for Casey's role, although it was a good performance.
Denzel has like, won 2 Oscars already 7 noms. It'd probably be split for him or Andrew Garfield.

Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
I totally agree. It seems like people read a headline like "Casey Affleck accused of harassment" and immediately jump to "HES GUILTY". Every lawyer on earth will tell you 100%, not every person who is accused of something is guilty. And on top of that, settling isn't an admission of guilt. Especially in cases involving celebrities. There could have been a hundred reasons why that whole case went down the way it did. Anthony Anderson (of Blackish) was accused of harassment (and I think rape) years ago as well, and it eventually came out that he was innocent, and the other parties were crying wolf so they could sue him for money. How do we know Affleck isn't in a situation like this? It happens in Hollywood literally all the time. People manipula16d0te each other, they take advange. Unfortunately, sexual harassment also happens all the time. And is obviously a disgusting thing for anyone to do. In terms of Affleck, like you said, maybe he's innocent, maybe he's guilty, or maybe the truth lies somewhere in the middle. We simply don't know. But the way social media has so quickly jumped to label him a guilty scumbag rapist, is sad to me. I would hope we could be less quick to judge a situation we know so little about.
And as you said, none of this should matter in an ACTING awards show. If he gave the best performance, then he deserves the award. If Denzel gave the best, then he deserves it. Plain and simple.

Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
Can't agree more. To label him a sexual predator and worst a serial one and rapist is out of line. There has not been any allegations before and since. This was an isolated case of alleged harassment not assault.
The man has 2 kids and this is not what they should be hearing and have to deal with. The internet should leave him alone! Or if they must feel the need to then they should stop being a hypocrite and call out on others too like Fassbender, bale, etc.
Unfortunately, it would seem his chances for Oscar had greatly been affected as evident by the lost of the sag award. It's a great shame as we would never truly know if Washington's performance was actually better or if he lost it due to this controversy.

Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
Absolutely. There were even other female producers and crew member1c84s on I'm Still Here who defended Affleck and Joaquin and said the two producers who sued were being deceitful. The whole situation is being twisted and contorted in my opinion. How can anyone know? It's ridiculous. I'm not claiming he is an angel, but for so many people to be labeling him a "man who sexually assaults women" and a "rapist" is out of line.

My sentiments exactly. As I see, most Liberals I know automatically believe anyone's claim even if there is no evidence whatsoever. On the other hand, most Conservatives will shut down any claim unless there is a strict evidence. False knowledge is worse than ignorance.
PS. I Affleck's case, it's not like he's been accused of actual rape anyway. Only misconduct. And while still awful, it's not something that should brand one for life even if guilty. But if so, he should apologize and pay up those women. If not, they should apologize and pay up him for soiled reputation.
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
Perhaps his team should do more to defend these claims. I know it's been said no parties can comment further due to terms of settlement but surely his PR team can do something. There's been mentioned another woman involved in the film can vouch for him? If she comes out with a more concrete story? Or it could be no one really wants to gets dragged into this mess which is understandable.
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
And if Casey Affleck doesn't win is not going to be a big deal since Denzel Washington's performance was pure wonder.
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
True.He`d be a worthy winner.
Re: I get the feeling he'll basically lose the Oscar now…
i agree. I saw both performances and am hard put to choose between them because they are so different . Denzel's performance is a tour de force . He is riveting and compelling. Affleck's performance is an exercise in subtlety and nuance. It is like the infinitely sad refrain of a violin at a wake versus drum rolls and trumpet calls of the virtuoso performance of Washington. In the end, I consulted how much of a stretch I thought the actor had put himself through. Casey Affeck's real life persona has a lot of similar characteristics to his character in Manchester by the Sea. I am not so sure he this role posed much of a stretch for him. Denzel, on the other hand, was clearly channeling years of experience playing an assortment of characters to achieve his tour de force. It was clearly a stretch for him as his real life persona is quite different from his Fences character. I suspect Casey Afleck has a long way to go before he can hit the notes that Washington hit,if ever.
Hollywood is reaching for the next generation of Oscar worthy actors . I imagine they want to add an American to the list of up and comers that already includes the likes of Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch. Thus their preference for Casey Affleck. He's done due deligence and put in many previously outstanding performances in artsy films. He's got great name recognition and Hollywood connections, he's been keeping his nose clean and hasn't stirred up any scandal for 10 years and keeps his politics to himself. He's a winner for them that they can capitalize on for the next 20 years. Denzel is at the twilight of his career and not an up and comer. Even if they think his performance is more worthy than Affleck's they haven't been overwhelmingly embracing it like they have Affleck's .He did get the SAG ,however, and it might be a foreshadowing of how the Oscar will go. They many still may be smarting from diversity allegations left over from last year and Denzil clearly deserves an Oscar.So?16d0

The academy awards, not that I feel bad given the prize bags they offer, is already the most respected award most peoplw.in film industry can receive. Even being nominated is worth bragging in every movie trailer you star in for next twenty years. Bafta nomination, not as much.
Academy has enough stress.as is to truly pick the best perfomance out of hundress of acting, directing, cinematography each year. they get a lot of backlash, ALOT, when they choose shakespeare in love over saving private ryan or crash over brokeback mountain, How green was.my valley over Citizen Kane, Star wars losing, gravity losing, Social network losing, etc.
What i mean is theye SPECIFIC JOB is to choose a best performance based on performancE NOT let allegations effect.what should be a fair race. Im a barista, if a customer comes in and is a piece of *beep* I still serve him.coffee,
my job is to serve anyone who pays, as long as they dont cause a scene then and there, a drink despite other aspects of the person. Him being a piece of *beep* will get its punishment elsewhere, my job AND THE ACADEMYS JOB, is not to give it when its not our job to
