The Man in the Iron Mask : I'm confused SPOILERS
Re: I'm confused SPOILERS
The musketeers(King Luis) missed on purpose! All shots, or most wounded the 4 musketeers, all superficial. They were actually legends to the other musketeers, the younger generation.I guess they did that(the bodies and all the smoke)just to create a mythical or legendary status. Good stuff! :)
Re: I'm confused SPOILERS
Actually the bodies are the young musketeers who the old ones (D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis) fight with in the previous scene. And yes the musketeers do miss on purpose. You see them point their guns away.

Re: I'm confused SPOILERS
It's explained in the movie when Porthos, Athos, Aramis and D'Artagnon decide to charge them. When they're talking about it, they point out that the younger musketeers with the guns were raised on the legends about them. They looked up to those four, and like the Lieutenant said, they wanted to be them.
They couldn't stand the thought of shooting their idols, especially after seeing how brave they were by charging them, hence the line "magnificent valour".
That's why they all closed their eyes and aimed at the ground or walls, yes they got a few grazes from bullets but nothing serious. Which is why they're limping, but not dead when the smoke clears.
So no, D'Artagnon didn't die twice, he only died once, when he was protecting Phillipe from Louis.

Re: I'm confused SPOILERS
AFter the credits, we find out that they are already dead and this was just a what if.
Re: I'm confused SPOILERS
Very much this. Also, I seem to recall that the idea of "magnificent valour" was lifted from the original novel where - in rather a different context - the musketeers make a similar charge. The young boys just cannot make themselves shoot their heroes and thus they close their eyes before they pull their triggers and their aim wavers.
Also, there were not several volleys. In order shoot a second volley, they would have had to have at least 15-20 seconds to reload their weapons and they never had that much.

Re: I'm confused SPOILERS
They were all missing on purpose - so the superficial wounds were likely caused by ricochet. It seems Lt Andre's phrase "magnificent valor" might have told the rest that he was fine with them missing - none of them wanted to fire at D'Artagnon. Lt Andre mentions to King Louis about two minutes earlier that none wanted to fight the general.

I'm confused SPOILERS
How weren't they killed by the gunfire? Whose are those bodies lying on the ground when the gunfire ceases? How can D'Artagnan die twice? Isn't this like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid having yet another scene at the end of the two in a nearby bar, plotting more bank robberies - because the thousands of gunmen all somehow missed?
Can anyone explain what I'm supposed to believe?
