Meet the Parents : The marijuana pipe…

The marijuana pipe…

This was the most annoying part of the movie and the biggest "plot hole" in my opinion:

The scene where Danny goes to his jacket and tries to get his marijuana pipe, and his dad catches him and he just blames Greg ('I found it in Greg's jacket'); ok, so for an ex-CIA agent, how could he miss the most important thing:

Greg lost his suitcase. This implies that he has no jacket nor a marijuana smoker.

That' it. If I were in Gaylord's place, I would've been so pissed off at this :))

Re: The marijuana pipe…

"Greg lost his suitcase. This implies that he has no jacket nor a marijuana smoker."

Not really...he flew in on an airplane from Ney York, why is it not possible he had a jacket with him?

The plot hole is really...how did Jack not realize the jacket was his son's?

Re: The marijuana pipe…

No, the question is how does Jack, former CIA human lie detector, not realize that his own son is telling a flat out lie to his face?

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Maybe because Denny's lived with him for so long, he know how to play Jack.

Come eat some chemicals with me.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

i think he just didn't really question denny about it because of the previous conversation that jack and greg had in the car on the way to the drugstore. the one about puffing the magic dragon.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Even a former CIA agent can be in denial about their children's lifestyles.
Anyway, it's all for comedic effect.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Yep, never underestimate the power of denial.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Because Greg is the newcomer and Denny is (presumably, as Jack's only son) already part of the Circle of Trust. The part that's unfair to Greg is that Jack never comes out and says what's on his mind, therefore Greg is unable to defend the charge. Jack, being a former CIA human lie detector, would theoretically be able to gauge who's lying about the pipe. But Denny is already part of the Circle and Greg is already on shaky ground, so Jack's mind is clearly made up on the matter.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

you're forgetting one thing.....

THE PIPE WOULD HAVE SET OFF THE METAL DETECTORS!!!

AND SINCE YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY SORT OF CONTROBAND ON AN AIRPLANE, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THROWN IN JAIL.

OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

Re: The marijuana pipe…

I thought that in saying it was "Greg's jacket," he could simply have been referring to the jacket Greg was wearing, rather than a jacket that Greg actually owned, and I thought Jack took it that way.

The marijuana pipe was small, and could easily have been carried on Greg's person onto the flight.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

And the airport security would just let him keep his pipe?

You amuse me.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

The pipe is not illegal, only its content is.
Hiding that is easier (if in small quantity)

Re: The marijuana pipe…

I was watching the movie the other week and thought that scene was a little weird too. Jack new that Greg lost his luggage and was in earshot when Pam told Greg to just grab Denny's jacket. Don't really get why he wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it was Dennys.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Plot hole?? What! How about putting in Pam's suitcase?

Re: The marijuana pipe…

:)
This is what happens when you watch a film to many times, you notices details!

It is a huge plot hole. A skilled CIA-agent such as Jack would instantly know that Denny lied about the pipe.
No way would he suspect it was Greg's.

But I am guessing it was added for comedic purposes and to give Jack yet another reason to dislike Greg.

Or maybe Jack simply chose to believe Denny since he was his son? Greg was still a newcomer to the family, it was easier to suspect him.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

it was heavily implied he didn't want to admit his son was a pothead. people like to think their kids are better than they are and everyone else worse. it's perfectly normal. but when that oblivious parent worked in the CIA, it's hilarity.

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Chalk it up to bad writing, I guess. Although I did notice Jack giving Denny an incredulous look before going to talk to Greg. Maybe he just used that as an excuse to bully Greg around some more. Throw his weight around, so to speak. "You're in my world now, Focker. You play by MY rules. What *I* say goes. I'm top dog and you're my bitch."

Re: The marijuana pipe…

Yep, I noticed this the first time watching it years ago. So much for being a human lie detector. I agree with the fact that Jack was just in denial with his son and wanted to trust him while wanting any excuse to loathe Greg. Since Jack is also such a bonehead with the subject, it probably didn't even dawn on him that such a smoking device is not getting through security. (At least it would be nearly impossible, even in 1999-2000, I'd think.)

Of course, in the end, Jack learns from his "nanny cam" who really was puffing the magic dragon. I dug that Greg outed Denny. (He ends up in military school or something like it, as it was said in "Meet the Fockers." So Jack's "circle of denial" eventually came to an end!)
