Mulholland Drive : Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Mulholland Dr was the first film by David Lynch I've ever watched. I was hooked by every strange scene and by that trippy feeling you get trying to solve it, I really enjoyed the experience it brought me. Since then, I have tried to find other films like it, but failed miserably. I started watching other Lynch films: Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Inland Empire, and liked them all, but they are very different in every aspect. Maybe Inland Empire is the one to get closer to what I felt while watching Mulholland Dr, but not close enough.

Are there other films that are similar to Mulholland Dr, or maybe other directors with similar work?

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

You might want to try Alain Resnais' Last Year in Marienbad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054632/). Maybe it's more similar to Inland Empire than to Mulholland Drive, but I think it fits this sentence of yours (at least from my perspective):

I was hooked by every strange scene and by that trippy feeling you get trying to solve it, I really enjoyed the experience it brought me.

It's a quite slowly moving and repetitive movie, though, but I like it.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

have you tried lost highway by lynch also?

I think that maybe the closest to md of his other films.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Femme Fatale by Brian de Palma and Sunset Blvd by Billy Wilder are two that spring to mind.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

I agree with Shastwell that Lost Highway is by far the most similar movie to Mulholland Dr.

Of course Sunset Blvd. was a partial inspiration for Mulholland Dr.

I haven't seen Femme Fatale, but de Palma's Body Double has spooky echoes which are found in Mulholland Dr.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Have you seen "Picnic at Hanging Rock", "Lime Salted Love" or "The Machinist"? It is hard to know what "experience" you are interested in but these provide interesting experiences as I recall. How bout "Slaughterhouse 5", "Barton Fink" and "American Psycho"? Nothing I have ever seen is really like MD though that so involves and reflects the viewer. "The Grandmother"? "The Black Swan"?

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Imho Inland Empire and Mulholland Drive are essentially the same movie stylistically. The biggest difference is the final 20 odd minutes of MD from when Diane wakes up to her suicide. If you take that part out such that you only have Diane's Dream, you have Inland Empire.

Thematically, both movies examine and explore a woman's tremendous guilt over her past actions. In MD Diane kills herself and in IE the 'Woman in Trouble' drives herself mad.

To varying degrees Lynch's other movies, except 'The Straight Story' describe his protagonists' feelings about the terrible things that have happened to them.

Agreed.

This might be right. But I'm still not 100% sure.

The screwdriver to Laura Dern's belly. Does it symbolize guilt over an abortion? Guilt over infidelity? Both?

Or is there some chance Laura Dern's character really was physically harmed as the result of her questionable actions in life? Sometimes I think maybe. But perhaps it is pure symbolism and the harm purely psychic.

(of course I also think it is a tangential reference to the Manson murder/abortion of Sharon Tate, who was pregnant with Polish director Roman Polanski's baby. Not a coincidence that Polanski was later linked with Natassja Kinski. His involvement in this movie may be even more substantial than just this part.)

I think it represents both: the real physical harm to the protagonist's body and is also symbol of a deep psychological wound, caused by guilt over this woman's fetus being aborted.

Imo, the Laura Dern character you mention is NOT herself real or even human. She represents an aspect of the film's protagonist's psyche and as such she can not 'physically' have a wound. However, the protagonist of the movie DID have a physical wound to her stomach which caused her to lose her pregnancy. This aborted fetus is ONE of the TWO things (unpaid bills) this woman feels guilty, grieves and obsesses about, hence it's second, symbolic meaning.

Footprints on the Moon - Le Orme.

Rather obscure Italian film from the 70s but I think it's available on youtube.

It has a similar hypnotic dreamlike mood.

Couple more:

Carnival of Souls.

Jacob's Ladder.

(Both are more or less a re-telling of Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge which I'm pretty sure was an influence on Lynch.)

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

You might want to try The Machinist and Donnie Darko.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Altough it's Has a different vibe overall you should really watch "Eyes Wide Shut" by Kubrick.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Although different style overall, I found a lot of similarities between Mulholland Dr. and Stay (2005, with Ryan Golsing and Naomi Watts). Mulholland is a much better movie but give it a try.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

The first that jumped to my mind was the anime film Perfect Blue.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

There's several good suggestions here and I really don't think you'll find another movie which is as symbolic and left up to your own interpretation.

I'll suggest Shutter Island because of similar themes of guilt and multiple dream sequences. Even the lesser quality The Number 23 is somewhat like Mulholland Drive. It isn't close to being as good but check it out and see for yourself!😉

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

I have been exactly in the same situation as you. After watching the masterpiece that is Mulholland Dr, I wanted to watch other similar films, to have that experience again.

I have found Lost Highway to be the only to give me that. MD is probably better (actually it is in my top 5 of all time), but LH is where this masterpiece comes from. I see MD as LH 2.0.

Re: Can you recommend other films like Mulholland Drive?

Double Life of Veronique

Jacob's Ladder

Triangle

Angel Heart

The Usual Suspects

All films that need repeat viewings to pick up on some of the mysteries and plot points.

As others have mentioned, Lynch's Lost Highway and Inland Empire are very close in tone to this, with the former being darker and the latter being more surreal.

Ultimately I think Mulholland Drive is pretty unique in its blend of comedy, horror, and mystery.
