It's more likely a plot device, to show how little he cares for the rules. "If it's just going to reset, I can steal it"

It makes it more interesting that way.

And besides, maybe he wouldn't have been able to get the Mercedes and those costumes on credit alone.

He didn't "have" to rob the armored car, he just did it out of boredom.

Like all those other good deeds would have outweighed the bad.
Then he has got some sweet, sweet cash!
And I guess that is where he got all the money for the piano lessons.

Which also means that he didn't have to take the piano lesson and so the piano teacher's comments at the dance ("I'm so proud. He's my student!!") weren't really possible in the film's context.
