Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

Todays focus: S54 E200 1.23.17 LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

In this episode of General Hospital we saw Lulu Spencer Falconeri (Emme Rylan) do the unthinkable. She crashed down through the ceiling on to a cake during her friends' wedding reception. It all took place after a conversation Lulu had with Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez) in a linen closet. Never mind how they wound up in a linen closet. The important thing is that after weeks of agonizing, she finally told Charlotte she was her biological mother. Then when the girl ran out, the door became stuck.

I've been watching soaps since the beginning of time. I've seen people get stuck in elevators. I've seen pregnant women go into labor with nobody else around while a powerful storm rages outside the window. I've seen heroes tied up while their doppel gangers assumed their identities and wreaked havoc. You name the cliche, and I've seen it on a soap opera.

But today was the first time I saw someone get stuck in a linen closet, crawl through an air duct that led along the ceiling of a reception room, then fall down into a large cake that just so happened to be positioned directly underneath. I am assuming this was meant to be entertaining, in a comedy relief sort of way. Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) was the first one to see Lulu fall, and he quickly got his wife back on her feet while she tried to remove the frosting from her dress.

Of course none of this was done in one continuous take. She went into the duct and the scene ended. Then a short time later, Dante heard something above him. He looked up and the camera did not tilt up, but presumably she was getting ready to fall. They didn't show what he was looking at for two reasons. First, Emme Rylan is not a stuntwoman. And second, we would have seen the boom mics, the lighting and the catwalk above, because there is no real ceiling for the sets on this show. In the next part, after Lulu has fallen, we start with a close-up of Rylan on top of the cake getting up. For an encore performance, she will accidentally get shot out of a cannon at the next Nurses' Ball. Stay tuned for more ongoing embryonic confessions and pratfalls.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I think they should have had a stunt woman dressed exactly the same actually fall into the cake.

The humor is the fall not after the fact.

Another missed opportunity.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

Yes, it would have been much more memorable if we had seen her fall. Because there is no ceiling for the set, they would have had to do it on location somewhere where they could use a real air duct and a real ceiling. But it would have been worth it; the way this was presented, they kind of cheated the audience. Plus there weren't any authentic reaction shots.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I know falling in a cake is usually pretty funny but I didn't see it that way. I saw it as humiliating for Lulu and painful, and I generally do not laugh at someone's pain. Lulu is the wronged party here, a mother who has been deliberately separated by her child. Valentin has manipulated the situation to make Charlotte dependent on him, he installed first Claudette and then Nina as surrogates for her true mother. I think Valentin takes delight in Lulu's pain and discomfort. While Lulu may not have used the best judgement in the timing of her announcement to Charlotte, I don't think she deserved to suffer that humilation.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

You're right about Valentin he does seem to take pleasure in Lulu's misfortunes. He's not much different than Stavros.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

He is quite different from Stavros, Stavros is completely insane and irrational. Valentin is anything but.

welp, that's the most incorrect thing I've seen written on these boards in awhile. So not true. lol

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I guess we'll disagree on that point. LOL I think a lot of the Cassadines are interchangeable. Their villainy sort of bleeds together in my mind. I know we're supposed to see Valentin as more of a potentially romantic figure with Nina, but I'm not feeling it. And I don't see why they didn't just bring Stavros back for this embryo storyline. In my opinion, it would have used some of Lulu's history better than having to establish a whole new character who has a weirdly constructed backstory with Anna.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

And I don't see why they didn't just bring Stavros back

Because he is a crappy character played by a crappy actor, and we want good characters played by good actors. Stavros has never been a good or interesting character, not even during his first run in 1983.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

LOL, I gotta catch that episode on YT!

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I get the feeling you don't actually WATCH the epis, but just read recaps, because Val is far diff than any other Cassadine save a young Viktor.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I see Cosmo and Auto have been chiming in. I hope they're being constructive. I appreciate their keeping my threads on page one. LOL

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I hope you start being open to criticism and not being a reactive whiner. It's best to focus on your own limits.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

Looks like Cosmo and Auto are still chiming in. Gotta' love it. In my opinion, they should be making their own threads and facilitating a more positive exchange of ideas about the show.

Check for a new Today's Focus in a little while, where I will be discussing the Corinthos clan.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

Looks like Jarrod is wanking off again and reposting the same points. Gotta love it. He should spend more time actually creating posts of some depth so that he is not forced to repeat himself. LOL!

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

I love how I actually provided substantive answers to your questions and you responded with nothing but personal attacks and insults.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

Jarrod is too busy plotting how to divert readers to his blog to take time and actually converse.

It's hard to actually think, rather than sneer and attack.

Shame on you, Auto!

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

You think that Valentin is insane and completely irrational? On what basis?

Valentin is not insane, he is the classic 'evil genius', he is Lex Luthor or Blofeld. Valentin has been one step ahead of everyone else in town since he first showed up, he's been outsmarting everyone for months, that's literally the exact opposite of an insane person.

Re: Today's focus– LULU AND THE WEDDING CAKE

and this is why I love him!

An intellectual carrot , the mind boggles
